2 . Ireland has had a very difficult history. The problems started in the 16th century when English rulers tried to conquer Ireland. For hundreds of years, the Irish people fought against the English. Finally, in 1921,the British government was forced to give independence to the south of Ireland. The result is that today there are two “Irelands”. Northern Ireland, in the north, is part of the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland, in the south, is an independent country.

In the 1840s, the main crop, potatoes, were affected by disease and about 750,000 people died of hunger. This, and a shortage (短缺) of work, forced many people to leave Ireland and live in the USA, the UK, Australia and Canada. As a result of these problems, the population fell from 8.2 million in 1841 to 6.6 million in 1851.

For many years, the majority of Irish people earned their living as farmers. Today, many people still work on the land but more and more people are moving to the cities to work in factories and offices. Life in the cities is very different from life in the countryside, where things move at a quieter and slower pace.

The Irish are famous for being warm-hearted and friendly. Oscar Wilde, a famous Irish writer, once said that the Irish were “the greatest talkers since the Greeks”. Since independence, Ireland has revived (复兴) its own culture of music, language, literature and singing. Different areas have different styles of old Irish songs which are sung without instruments. Other kinds of Irish music use many different instruments such as the violin, whistles, etc.

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。文章主要介绍了门艺术家Rawya Ahmed举办的她第一个个人展览,提供了一种罕见的宁静之美,她希望能够抚慰那些被卷入血腥战争的人们。

8 . SANAA—Yemeni artist Rawya Ahmed opened her first personal exhibition in the Houthi—controlled Yemeni capital, Sanaa. Instead of visualizing the pains of war and destruction, the artist’s paintings offer a rare peaceful beauty, which she hopes will ease the suffering of the people who have been caught up in the bloody war.

“For me, it was a discharge of negative energy that I have got during the war. I used to feel annoyed but didn’t know how to get rid of the pressures. Luckily, I finally found that I could seek shelter in the beautiful things.” Ahmed says.

Ahmed’s exhibition is rare in Yemen since the war erupted in 2014. For most Yemenis, the most urgent problems are escaping the next air attack or finding the next meal for their families. But some artists, like Ahmed, are now trying to put the country in a positive light through their brushes and colors, and to find an escape for the people and themselves to momentarily forget the sounds of explosions and air attack.

In Ahmed’s paintings, she has tried to change the misery on people’s faces by using delightful colors.

“In the exhibition, we have special sections on paintings of famous people in the country, such as the Yemeni writer and poet Abdullah AIBaradouni, and the singer Abu Bakr Salem,” Ahmed says, adding that the artistic portraits of familiar faces can offer people a reminder of the time before the war erupted.

Many visitors who came to the exhibition believed it could relieve the despair inside the hearts.

Samah A-Wajih, one of the visitors who attended the exhibition, expressed her gladness about the paintings and wished all the world to see that there is still beauty, despite the destruction in the country.

“This certainly calls on the world that there are hope and life inside this war stricken country.” AI-Wajih says.

Abdul Wasea Al-Ahnoumi, an organizer of the exhibition, says, “Young men and women are looking, through their paintings, for love, peace and safety away from the war. 9 . The cost of living in countries like the U.S., Britain, Australia or France has skyrocketed in recent years. However, if you're willing to leave your country and explore life in other areas, there are many countries boasting an extremely cheap and low cost of living. Check out the following countries when planning your next move.

Ecuador

Ecuador is similar to the United States in many ways, and as a result has become a popular American getaway. They even use the U.S. Dollar for their currency. In this country, it's cheaper to eat out every day than cook for yourself on a budget in the U.S. You can even buy a property for around $50,000 and hire someone to tend to it while you're away.

Mexico

Although the country is known for its poverty-ridden streets, there are many wealthier areas that provide every facility you might need. You can live off a mere $700 to $800 a month in Mexico, and this includes rent for a nice place, facilities, food, and any sightseeing.

Argentina

Argentina has been a popular tourist destination for many years. It has great restaurants, a rich history, and many places to explore. Not to mention, it's not very expensive to live here. A decent sized home can cost around $139,000, which is relatively cheap in relation to homes in the United States.

Vietnam

Vietnam has also become a popular tourist destination in recent years. There are many million-dollar luxury homes by the beach, but you can find a modest flat or small home for around $25,000 to $50,000 if you search in the right areas.

1. Why has Ecuador become a holiday destination for Americans?
A.Because housing is very cheap.
B.Because it has a low cost of living.
C.Because it is similar to America in many ways.
D.Because it has lots of nice places for sightseeing.
2. What do all of the four countries have in common?
A.All of them have great restaurants.
B.All of them have a low cost of living.
C.All of them are poor developing countries.
D.The middle-sized homes are a little expensive.
3. In which country is the U.S. dollar used for its currency?
