A company in San Francisco, California, has found a way to turn used plastic bottles into women’s shoes.

Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids from plastic bottles. More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills or are burned with other waste products.

A San Francisco start-up company called Rothy's, however, turns this plastic waste into environmentally friendly shoes. Roth Martin is the company’s co-founder. He explains how ihey turn plastic into soft material for women’s feet. They take the plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device that makes soft fibers. Those fibers are then combined together. This is done by a 3D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while making the shoes. The knitted stuff and the inner part of the shoe are then attached to the shoe’s outer part, called the sole (鞋底).This outer sole is also made from environmentally friendly material: responsibly sourced no-carbon rubber.

Rolhy’s shoes are sold online. They are flat shoes, with either a rounded or pointed toe. They come in different colors and designs. They cost either $ 125 or $ 145 per pair, depending on the design. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them last year, the demand for the shoes grew. Martin says there is no shortage of material to fill that demand. “We’re not going to run out of water bottles any time soon. So we have a limitless supply of material, and I think that is a good sign for our future." When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled material to make other products.

For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international shipping in the near future.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是废弃蟹笼的危害和解决方案。

Crab traps (蟹笼) work like this: crabs crawl in, but they don’t crawl out.     1     However, when traps get lost at sea, they become a threat to all sorts of animals.

With no one there to get them back, the traps continue to fish, says a researcher. “Marine life gets into the trap. Eventually, they can’t eat so they die, and then other marine life becomes attracted to it. They get into the trap, and they die.     2

Abandoned crab traps harm wildlife and affect other fishers, especially shrimpers (捕虾者). Large and heavy crab traps get caught in shrimping nets, tearing them open or blocking them from catching shrimp. Helpless shrimpers, with nowhere to put the smelly traps, generally just throw them back, continuing the cycle.

But a group in Mississippi has found a solution:     3     In just three years, the program has removed almost 3,000 crab traps from Mississippi waters. Crab traps are marked, and those that are still in good condition are returned to their owners, while traps that are too broken down are recycled.

4     Wildlife is safer, the water is cleaner and there’s been a clear trend that shrimpers are encountering fewer traps.

Chloé Dubois, head of a nonprofit focused on marine debris (废弃物), calls it “a great success story.” Dubois says there have been programs historically very successful at recycling waste products at the end of their life cycle. But in the ghost fishing and marine debris field, she says, “     5     There aren’t many examples of programs like this.”

A.It’s a real win-win.
B.The Mississippi program is a pioneer.
C.It just becomes this awful cycle of death.
D.Shrimpers are informed of basic knowledge of fishing.
E.In the meantime, the Mississippi program is expanding.
F.That’s good news for crab fishers’ chances of pulling in a good catch.
G.A $5 reward is paid to shrimpers to collect and recycle abandoned crab traps.

【推荐2】Wildlife conservation is the preservation and protection of animals, plants, and their habitats. By conserving wildlife, we’re ensuring that future generations can enjoy our natural world and the unbelievable species that live within it. To help protect wildlife, it’s important to understand how species interact within their ecosystems, and how they are affected by environmental and human influences.

Plants and animals have life events that seemingly occur like clockwork every year. Birds can migrate, mammals may hibernate (冬眠), flowers bloom, and leaves change colors. The study of how the biological world times these natural events is called phenology. Scientists now understand that plants and animals are strongly influenced by their local climate (long-term weather patterns). Climate is affected by non-biological factors — temperature, precipitation (降水), and available sunlight. Species use the predictable yearly changes in the climate to determine when they start natural events such as breeding or flowering.

Climate change is slowly increasing average annual temperatures. One of the most noticeable ways that climate change is influencing wildlife is by changing the timing of natural events. With warmer temperatures, flowering plants are blooming earlier in the year and migratory birds are returning from their wintering grounds earlier in the spring. Phenology is an important subject for conservationists to study because it helps us understand the patterns of specific species and overall ecosystem health. Every species has an effect on those in its food chain and community, and the timing of one species’ phenological events can be very important to the survival of another species.

1. According to paragraph 1, what helps a lot in wildlife conservation?
A.Investigating the major threat to the wildlife habitat loss
B.Ensuring future generations have enough natural species.
C.Exploring the reasons contributing to interaction between species.
D.Studying the effects of environmental and human activities on wildlife
2. It can be learned that “phenology” is a branch of science that studies__________.
A.the yearly changes of the climate
B.the conservation of the whole ecosystem
C.the seasonal behaviors of animals like bird migration
D.the relations between climate and biological phenomena
3. How does the climate change negatively affect the wildlife?
A.It ruins the overall ecosystem health.
B.It leads to the mass extinction of wildlife
C.It disturbs the timing of species’ life events.
D.It affects the food chain of another community.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.The importance of phenological study in wildlife conservation.
B.The relationship between climate and non-biological factors.
C.The significance of understanding wildlife conversation.
D.The influence of climate change on the wildlife.

【推荐3】A study has shown how ecotourism in the Philippines has changed people’s attitudes towards marine (海洋的) conservation (保护).

Researchers from the University of Victoria and other institutes in Philippines visited three sites where tourists pay to swim with whale sharks in the wild. They interviewed a range of locals in Oslob, Donsol and Pintuyan, including fishers and ex-whale shark hunters. At Oslob, the largest of the three sites, people were more likely to speak about the resulting improvements to their quality of life and an increase in job opportunities. At the smaller, less profitable sites, responses were more likely to be about the changes in how people behaved towards the whale sharks.

Dr. Jackie Ziegler, leader of the team of researchers, said, “Many of the people reported they now care about and value whale sharks because of tourism activities. They also expressed the community’s emotional connection to the species and the strong need to protect them. Before the introduction of tourist activities, most of the locals admitted harming the sharks by hitting them with stones or riding them.” In terms of attitudes towards the wider marine environment, the majority of respondents now actively encourage others to care for the ocean and they also use more sustainable (可持续的) fishing practices.

The study also acknowledged the possible negative effects of tourism on the marine environment, such as effects on the health of local coral reefs (珊瑚礁) and of the sharks. It concluded that further studies were needed to assess these effects before firm conclusion could be drawn on the positive effect of whale sharks tourism on ocean conservation.

Nevertheless, the researchers say their work suggests ecotourism can be an effective means of strengthening protection. “Bringing in the views of the local tour operation to the study was necessary in uncovering the true effect of whale shark tourism and the wider benefit to the ocean conservation in the Philippines,” Dr Ziegler added.

1. When interviewed, local people did NOT talk about __________?
A.Improvement of life.B.Behaviours towards sharks.
C.Increases of work chances.D.Relationships between people.
2. Which word can best describe locals’ action towards marine life before ecotourism?
A.Protective.B.Satisfying.C.Unsustainable.D.Suitable.
3. What will the researchers possibly do next?
A.Improve local living conditions.
B.Draw a firm conclusion about the effect.
C.Encourage fishers to hunt more whale sharks.
D.Assess possible negative effects tourism may bring.
4. What may be the best title of the text?
A.Ecotourism Transforms Locals’ Attitudes to Marine Conservation.
B.Ecotourism Does Much Good to Marine Life as Before.
C.Marine ecotourism Gives Rise to a New Kind of Business.
D.Ecotourism Has Brought Large Benefits to People.
