There are many kinds of dictionaries-Chinese dictionaries, English dictionarics, English-Chinese dictionaries and so on. When we learn English, we often use English dictionaries or English-Chinese dictionaries.

We use the English or English-Chinese dictionary for two reasons—to find out how to spell the word, and to find out the meaning of a word.

All the words in such a dictionary are in alphabetical order. Words that begin with the letter “a” are at the beginning of the dictionary. Words that begin with the letter “z” are at the end of the dictionary.

The second letter of a word is also important. For example, the word “act” comes before the word “ant”. This is because the letter “c” comes before the letter “n” in the alphabet. For the same reason the word “bag” comes before the word “bat”. The letter “g” comes before the letter “t” in the alphabet.

If people do not know the alphabet, they cannot use an English or English-Chinese dictionary. They do not know how to find words.

Mr Green worked in the city, but he lived in the country and went to work by train. The train station was not far from his office. Mr Green always went there on foot. After work, he saw a poor man with a dog in the street. There was a piece of paper on the dog’s neck, and the words “I AM BLINI” were on it. Mr Green always gave him a little money.

One day, Mr Green had a lot of work in his office and went home very late. So he didn’t stop in front of the poor man. After he had passed them, the poor man ran after him and said, “You didn’t give me anything today.” Mr Green stopped and asked, “You’re a blind man. How did you know that I passed?” The poor man said, “No, I’m not. My old dog is.”
