【推荐1】My name is Robinson Crusoe, and I was born in the city of York in 1632. My father was a successful businessman. I had two elder brothers. One of them worked in the army (军队) and was killed during the war against Spain. The other was missing one day, and we never knew what had happened to him. My father gave me a good education and wanted me to be a lawyer (律师).
However, I wanted to be a sailor and go to sea. My father was very angry with me. He didn’t understand why I wanted to leave his house, where I would have an easy and comfortable life.
“Two kinds of people go to sea,” he said. “They are the very poor people and the very rich people. The poor are foolish, having no other way to live. The rich own ships and can make money with them. You are neither too poor nor too rich. You are in the middle, so you should choose a middle way for your life. Stay at home with your mother and me. “Please ask Dad if he will let me have one voyage(航海)by sea,” I asked her. “When I return, I will live the life he wants me to live.”
Mum was angry. “Your father will not let you go. I don’t want you to go to sea either. It’s dangerous.”
I argued with my parents for another year. Then, I went to Hull with a friend who was going to London by ship. He invited me to go with him, and I agreed. I did not even tell my parents before leaving. I just went. That was how all my bad luck began.

【推荐2】Once upon a time, there was a captain (船长) who loved money so much that he cheated (欺骗) his sailors at the end of every voyage (航行) and took their wages (工钱).

On the last day of one voyage, the ship was in a small port. It was winter time, and the sea was very cold, so the captain said to his sailors, “If one of you stays in the water during the whole night, I will give him my ship. But if he comes out before the sun appears, I shall get his wages.”

The sailors had heard about the captain’s cheating, so they didn’t believe him. But then one of them, who thought that he was cleverer than the captain, said that he would do it. He got into the water, and, though it was very cold, he stayed in it. When it was nearly morning, some fishermen lit a fire on the shore about half a mile away.

“You are cheating,” the captain said to the sailor. “The fire’s warming you.”

“But it’s half a mile away!” said the sailor.

“A fire’s fire,” answered the captain. “I win.”

The sailor came out of the water, and said, “Perhaps you think that you are clever because you have won my wages, but you can’t cook a chicken.”

“I can,” answered the captain.

“If you cook this chicken,” said the sailor, “I shall work for you without wages for seven years, but if you can’t, you will give me your ship.”

The captain agreed, took the chicken and said, “Where’s the fire?”

“There it is,” answered the sailor. “On the shore.”
