The year 2021 was a difficult one for people from Zhengzhou. On July 20, when most people were ready to go traveling,     1     or to the movies, a     2     rainstorm in my hometown of Zhengzhou disrupted (打乱) everything. The heavy rain lasted     3     days, causing massive floods(洪水).

When the rain stopped, I went to the community volunteer     4     station. I wanted to do something to help     5     who suffered(遭受) from the natural disaster(灾害). From 2 to 7 p.m. each day, I loaded(装货) and unloaded supplies that would be     6     to flooded areas with other volunteers. I was     7     moved as I saw so many people—adults and teens—come to volunteer. When everyone put on the red vests(背心) and stood together, I could even see the shape of a big Chinese heart.

In 2022, I want to take on     8     social responsibilities instead of only focusing on my studies. I want to make more contributions to my community as a citizen(公民).

Norman was a teacher of a middle school. He enjoyed running for exercise around the park when he was     1    .

One Sunday afternoon, after running as usual, Norman decided to go home and have a rest. Just then he noticed an old lady standing by the road. The old lady looked     2     worriedly. Norman went over and asked what he could do for her. After a     3     talk, Norman came to know that she forgot her way home and got lost. Norman called the old lady’s son and then took her to the nearest restaurant.

In the restaurant, Norman ordered food for her     4    . While eating, sometimes she carelessly sprinkled（撒）food and drink on the table and on her coat. Other     5     felt disgusted（厌恶）at the sight. But Norman didn’t care about it. He cleaned the table from time to time in silence and it took the old lady some time     6     eating. After that, Norman paid the bill. They were ready to leave     7     the old lady’s son arrived. He held Normans hand and said, “Thanks to your help, my mother was     8     well.”

“You’re welcome. She makes me     9     my mom who lives in the countryside. I just did what a son should do.” said Norman with a     10    . All the customers around were moved by his kindness and showed respect to him.

I volunteered for four weeks in a children’s home in Kathmandu, and it was a wonderful experience. After a long     1     , I arrived at the orphanage (孤儿院) and saw the children. It was an excellent way to get to know them and     2     them up. All the children were     3     and kind. The orphanage became my home and the children were so grateful for the help of     4     . Though the place was poor and there were     5    , they were happy. They got a lot of help from having a teacher, practicing their English and doing their homework. When we played games together, they were all     6     . When I taught them English, they could     7     me quickly. A volunteer can bring new information, education and ideas to the children’s home, can     8     their eyes to the world. And all these     9     a great difference to the children and will also     10     their lives.

I have a friend named Jim. He lived just around the corner from me. The days go by, and before I know it, a year has gone. I never go to see my old friend. He knows that I miss him, as I     1     to ring his bell, and he rang     2     , in the old days. If we were younger, things might be different, but now, we are busy, tired men. We are even tired of     3     games.

“ Tomorrow,” I said to myself, “ I will call on Jim just     4     that I’m thinking of him.” But tomorrow comes and tomorrow     5     , and the distance     6     us grows and grows. Around the corner! It’s miles away.

One day a postman came. “ Here’s a telegram for you, sir,” he said. I opened it and was     7     . “ Jim died today.” And that’s     8     we get in the end. Around the corner, a friend is gone.

So remember: If you love someone, tell him. Don’t be afraid to show him your love because when you decide that it is the right time, it might be too     9     . And most     10     , stay close to your friends and family.

Imagine being caught deep underground in a hole. You have no food and the oxygen is running out. You’re not even sure if anybody knows you’re down there.

A soccer team of 12 young Thai boys, as well as their coach (教练), had to go through this terrible     1     this summer. They were     2     in a hole in Thailand on June 23, spending 18 days in it     3     they were saved. After     4     the news, my friends and I talked about the situation and felt as if there might be no way to get the children out.

But they held out hope anyway. These boys and their coach     5     to give up hope, even when the situation seemed quite terrible. They were rewarded (奖赏) for     6     hope when they were finally saved.

It can be hard to hold out hope in dark times. Every day, we read or hear about the terrible things     7     happened in the world. This makes it hard for us to live     8     every day. Some people go through their lives thinking over that the worst is always just around the corner.

However, I believe that it’s especially important to stay     9     during difficult times. This is the best way to face the trouble that we meet in life. As people often say: there is always a light     10     the end of the tunnel (隧道).
