The Sometimes Friend
Lucy tried not to be nervous. It was her first day at a new school. She had no idea who to sit with. Then a girl with a big, bright smile waved Lucy over to her table. Lucy sat down beside her. “I’m Dinah. You look like an artist,” she said. “Hi, I’m Lucy. I like art,” Lucy said. “Me, too! Let’s _______ at your house this weekend. I’ll bring my markers (马克笔). You can make us cookies,” Dinah said. “OK,” Lucy said, _______ to have a new friend.
On Saturday, Dinah came to Lucy’s house. Lucy took out the strawberry cookie, fresh from the oven. “I like chocolate chip better. I told you that.” But in fact, Dinah had told her nothing of the kind. When she finished the cookies, she sat down on Lucy’s _______ and said, “Let’s draw here.” Lucy hesitated (犹豫). But she wanted Dinah to like her, so she _______. While they were drawing, Dinah’s marker slipped and made a long, black line on Lucy’s bedspread (床罩). “It was a/an _______!” Dinah said. But it seemed not.
That night at dinner, Lucy didn’t feel happy because Dinah confused her a lot. “What’s wrong, Lucy?” her dad asked. Lucy told her father what happened. “Friends make us feel _______. Does Dinah make you feel like this?” “Sometimes, but sometimes I’m afraid of her,” Lucy answered. Lucy’s dad smiled. “To have a friend, you have to be a friend. Maybe Dinah hasn’t _______ that yet but you have.” “Dinah told me not to play with other kids,” Lucy said. “Dinah is in charge of (掌控) Dinah. You’re in charge of you,” dad said.
The next day at lunch, Dinah waved and asked Lucy to sit beside her. “Let’s sit with Ana,” Lucy said. “No, she is mean,” Dinah said. Then Ana smiled at Lucy, and it made Lucy feel a little _______. “I’m going to sit with Ana. Come with me,” Lucy said. “Lucy, sit down!” Dinah said loudly but Lucy didn’t sit down. “If you want to be my friend, you need to be a friend to me. I hope you will.” Lucy said, turned and walked over to Ana. She sat down and looked at Ana. “How’s it going?” asked Ana. Lucy took a deep breath and said, “Better.”
