My name is Sheila Galloway. In the 50s, my dad worked in a factory but my mum stayed at home to look after me and my sister. We lived in a house with a tiny garden. I had to s    1     a room with my sister. We didn’t have central heating and our bedroom was very c    2     and wet in winter. We w    3     socks in bed to keep warm! We didn’t have a fridge, a washing machine or a telephone in those days. I remember we used to listen to the radio in the evenings, and t    4    , in 1959, we got a TV! The programmes were in black and white and finished at eleven o’clock at night. My sister and I used to go to the cinema at weekends. We had a record player,too. We often played our favourite r    5     on it.

How is everything going? After three days of basketball camp in     1     (加拿大), I am still alive and I still like basketball. In fact, this has been a really different week so far!

On Monday morning, I practised in a group with     2     (九) other kids. We chose a cool name for our team.     3     (后来), we met our coach, Monica. She used to play basketball for our national team! She told us we should be the best team at camp if we practised hard.

Yesterday we     4     (花费) a whole day on basic skills. It was a little boring, and my teammates thought so, too. Some of us     5     (拒绝) to practise at first. Coach Monica gave us a talk about basic skills in a     6     (响亮) voice to show the importance of them. And she let us play a     7     (使人放松) game at the end of the training.

Today we’re working on our free throws. You can’t     8     (想象) how nervous I am about this! I don’t know why I have trouble with free throws, but maybe Coach Monica will show me what I’m doing wrong.

Known as the fastest Chinese man, Su Bingtian made history and brought Chinese a/an     1     (forget) moment in the summer of 2021.

On Aug 1 of that year, Su set a new record of 9.8344     2     (second) in the Tokyo Olympics Men’s 100-meter semifinals, making him the first Chinese runner to enter the final in the event.

For a long time, there was an idea that     3     (Asia) were not physically built to succeed in sprinting. Su’s success broke this idea and inspired many people.

But the way to success was never easy for Su. Because of an injury, Su had to stop     4     (run) for several years. He even planned to retire(退役) in 2017. But the call to challenge himself     5     (bring) Su back to the track one year later. To increase his strength, Su trained even harder than before.

Su realized that finishing the semifinal in less than 10 seconds would earn him the chance to enter the final.     6     (encourage) himself, Su set a personal goal of 9.89 seconds. He even made the number his personal password for his phone and computer.     7     (luck), his efforts paid off.
