In April 2019, history was made in the wilds of Asia. For the first time ever, someone took a photo of a very ________ creature. It might even be the only animal of its kind! The critter had snow-white fur and red eyes. And it was walking around a bamboo forest in the Wolong National Nature Reserve ________ southwest China.
Can you guess what the all-white, red-eyed creature is? Here’s a clue: It’s a kind of ________.
Any guesses? It’s a giant panda.
Hold on now. Don’t pandas have black patches around their eyes, on their ears, and across their bodies? Don’t they have ________ dark eyes? Well, yes. So how can the animal in the photo be a panda?
It has albinism. Albinism is a ________ that affects the amount of melanin in people and animals. Melanin gives hair, skin, eyes, and fur their color. A body with little or no melanin will have white hair or fur, pale skin, and, often, reddish eyes.
Finding a giant panda with albinism was surprising. Why? For one, albinism isn’t common among ________ animals. And there aren’t many giant pandas to begin with. There are fewer than 2,000 of them living in the wild.
Animals that do have albinism often have problems. They don’t see well. This makes it hard for them to find food. And it can’t be easy for them to stay alive in the wild. Their white color makes it easy for ________ to spot them. And that’s not the end of their troubles. Their pale skin puts them at risk for skin cancer.
________ the 1 to 2-year-old ________ is doing well. It looks strong. It moves around with a ________ walk.
Will this panda ever appear in another photo? We can’t wait to find out!
