“Welcome to China!” is a simple greeting from Sun Zeyu, a volunteer at the Beijing Winter Games, to warm the h    1     of athletes (运动员) from all around the world.

Sun, a junior student from Tsinghua University, is an e    2     of how Generation Z (people born between 1995 and 2010) help others at the Games. Active and open-minded, they b    3     athletes from other countries together in their own ways. Their pleasant characters, global vision and new-age thinking m    4     the Games even more fantastic.

Gen Z athletes shared their China travels on social media. Some became big fans of Chinese food. Maud shared w    5     she ate every day on TikTok－fried rice, Kung Pao chicken and Peking duck. What to eat each day was a h    6     choice for her. “Everything is so good,” she said.

Gen Z volunteers s    7     the event with heart and soul. Alexandra Pozhidaeva, 23, from Russia, had a heart-warming moment with her Chinese volunteers. When the stadium (体育馆) was very cold, they l    8     her their gloves (手套). She said it was touching as they didn’t know each other.

Another volunteer, Yang Jinhe, 18, started to work on m    9     about COVID-related in mid-December. He also worked at the Paralympic Games (残奥会). Back in 2008, he was impressed by the song You and Me. Now he says he really understands the meaning of “you and me” as well as the Olympic s    10     of togetherness.

What breaks your heart? “For     1     (I), it’s seeing people who need a friend,” the seventh grader Sammie Vance from Indiana, US, tells People magazine.

During a summer camp, Vance learns about buddy benches (伙伴长椅). These benches are     2     (seat) at a school playground. A lonely (孤独的) child can sit on it. Then     3     (other) will know he or she is in need of a friend.

She loves this idea. “This would be really cool     4     (have) some at my school,” Vance said. To make it     5     (happen), she collects (收集) 725     6     (kilo) of bottle caps (盖). Her mother helps find a company to turn the caps into benches. According to Vance, these benches are much cheaper than park benches and are good for the environment (环境).

Vance does the same thing for other     7     too. She also makes a Facebook page. People can make bottle cap donations (捐赠). She is surprised when she gets bottle caps from other     8     (country) like Germany, Australia and Japan.

Today, Vance has helped make 200 benches in schools and neighborhoods (社区). But she is not going to     9    . She says even adults (成人) can use a buddy bench because people at any     10     can feel lonely.
