In 1998, when the volunteer teacher Han Mei first entered the small mountain village school, she couldn’t believe her eyes. She was     1     to see the sight（情景）in front of her: broken windows, small old desks and chairs. Even     2    , students of different ages were in the same classroom. It was the only class in the school. Han Mei realized the local people     3     in poor education, so she decided to find out as many ways as she could to help them.

One day when Han Mei was     4     a class, Ma Qiang, a naughty（顽皮的）boy, made some noises for fun. Other kids laughed. At that time Han Mei decided to     5     him. She walked towards Ma Qiang and asked him to put out his hands. Han Mei stood silently beside Ma Qiang and looked at him     6    . Then she said with a smile, “I examined your little fingers just now. I know you will become a good doctor in the future. Come on!” Hearing this, Ma Qiang was surprised because     7     had said such words to him before. This was the first time he had heard them. He couldn’t     8     that completely but he remembered what the teacher said in his heart.

After that, Ma Qiang studied much harder and later he went to college. After many years, just as his volunteer teacher had expected, he became a     9     doctor. Ma Qiang always says his volunteer     10     encouraging words have made what he is.

During the pandemic of COVID-19 in early 2020, there were many heroes from all walks of life. “Dalian xiaohuo” Jiang Wenqiang is one of     1    .

In February 2020, Jiang was on a train from Shanghai to Changsha, Hunan Province. When the train     2     into Wuhan, he was told that it was for Wuhan passengers only. Everyone in the train, including Jiang, must get off it. Jiang didn’t have family or friends in Wuhan. He told himself that he couldn’t live on the street, so he searched     3     and finally found a job in Wuhan No.1 Hospital. It offered him free food and a place to live, but he had to work to send meals to     4     and take out the rubbish every day. “It was very stressful. Fear and despair filled my mind at     5    ," he said. But when he learned how hard the doctors and nurses were working to fight COVID-19, he knew he should be the     6    backup to those heroes. Quickly he won the trust of doctors, nurses and patients. Luckily,     7     about one month and a half, Jiang went back home to Dalian. “It was an experience I will remember for the rest of my life.” Jiang said.

    8     in July 2020, Dalian reported new local cases of COVID-19. The fight against the virus started again. Jiang decided to do something with the skills he had learned in Wuhan months earlier. He worked as a volunteer to send meals and do cleaning     9    . He said, “I just want to do something for my hometown.”

Jiang's story was reported and     10     widely. He makes people believe that every ordinary person can be a hero.

One night Mr Lee was driving his wife home from work. She was a nurse in a hospital. It was almost midnight and she was quite tired. She soon fell     1    , Mr. Lee looked at her and smiled.

Mr Lee was a     2     and experienced driver. He knew it was safer to drive slowly on a dark night. Just then he noticed a car     3     him. It was traveling very fast. Suddenly it overtook his car. The driver of the car was in such a     4     that he did not see the approaching truck. To avoid hitting it, he suddenly turned his car. The car skidded off the road and hit a big tree. The driver and the two     5     were injured. They were badly hurt by the     6     glass of the car. Mr. Lee quickly     7     his car and called the police. His wife got out of the car to help them. About twenty-five minutes     8    , a police car and an ambulance came. The injured were taken to hospital.

The policemen wrote down details of the accident. Mr. Lee and the truck driver told them     9     they could remember. The policemen thanked them for their help.     10     Mr Lee and Mrs Lee got into their car and continued their journey .

Everyone has a place which he remembers most from his childhood, and so do I. One of the places I remember from my childhood is a     1     in the country. I spent my summers in that place     2     I was a teenager, and now I begin to miss the farm again.

It was lovely to     3     there. There were a lot of     4     —cows, sheep, hens, dogs and cats. My sister and I     5     helped to work on the farm. We helped people graze (放牧) sheep or make bread or cheese. I can still remember that on Tuesdays we     6     the bread and on Thursdays, the cheese.

I love that farm because I learnt to     7     animals and not to be afraid of them there. We saw a sheep give birth to its baby there, and we enjoyed staying there to see how lovely the     8     sheep was.

Now my sister and her son are     9     this place. My nephew (外甥) is     10     with the place. I hope that he has a good time there and when he is     11    , he will remember the place as I do.

The new school was too large for Riya. She spent the first week trying to keep different     1     in her mind. It was so difficult! She decided that she would memorize where her class was and then pretend (装作) that the     2     of the places didn’t exist.

In PE lesson, Mr. Black drove her     3     when he said that everyone had to run one mile around the track on the playground. There was nothing she was     4     of more than having to run a whole mile. To Riya, the word “a mile” was considered as an impossible task.

When Mr. Black blew his whistle (哨), Riya thought she would be     5     far behind. However, while some of her classmates ran ahead, others couldn’t keep up with     6     actually. “It’s just the beginning,” she thought, “I’ll be the slowest one in the race for sure.”

Riya started using a mind trick on herself. She stopped     7     about the word “mile”. Instead, she made every     8     to reach the shadow (影子) on the track by a tree up ahead. Then she tried to see if she could complete half of the lap (圈). In this way, one lap     9     into two, then three, then four. When Mr. Black gave her a high five and said, “Nice work,” Riya was shocked. She never thought that she could run a whole mile.

As Riya walked back to the school building after the PE class, she felt     10     worried. She realized that maybe she could remember one classroom at a time. Big purposes are easier to achieve in small steps.
