It was a beautiful sunny day in a small village in Africa. I was playing with the children outside. A little boy, about 7 years old, gestured to me to follow him. He had a shy smile on his small face and said something to me.
"You want me to go to your home?" I asked. He nodded. So we went hand in hand to his home.
We went to the place where the cabbages were growing. "Piga picha" he said … "Take a picture". Then, I took a photo and showed him the photo on the camera, and he nodded.
We walked closer to the house and the little boy stood by the coffee tree. There his younger brother was picking coffee berries(咖啡豆). "Piga picha" he said again. I took a picture quickly for his younger brother.
He then pulled me by the hand to his mother's grave(墓地)around the back of the house. "Mama Sue," he said almost in tears, "Piga picha." It was my turn to nod. I silently obeyed his simple request. "Piga picha."
A picture of a little boy at his mother's grave! That reminded me: 40 years ago, when I was 7 years old, I was also standing at my own mother's grave.

【推荐1】In China, many people are leaving the countryside to find jobs in the cities, because the countryside is much poorer than the city, and often there isn’t much work there. Services such as hospital and transport are usually much better in the city than in the countryside. They hope that their lives will improve when they move to the city.
But in the big cities of Europe like London or Paris, people are moving out of the city. These rich families want to live a quieter life. They are tired of the noise and the dirt of the city, and they are tired of the crowded streets, crowded trains and buses. They don’t want to live in the cities any more. They want a house with a garden in the countryside, and breathe the fresh air there.
So they move out of the cities. Some don’t go very far, just a little way out of the city, to the towns near the cities; other people move to the real countryside with sheep, cows and green fields. There, they start new lives and try to make new friends.
Not all those who move from the city to the countryside are happy. After two or three years, many people who have done this feel that it was a big mistake. They don’t make so much money and there isn’t much work to do. People in the countryside are very different and aren’t always very friendly.
As a result, quite a lot of people who have moved to the countryside move back to the city. “_______________________________” they say.

A.The countryside is much poorer than the city.
B.People in the countryside have nothing to eat.

2. Why do some rich families in Europe move to the countryside?
A.Because they will find good jobs.
B.Because they are tired of living in the city.
C.Because they can make more money there.
D.Because they like feeding sheep and cows in the green fields.
3. What’s right about the people who move to the countryside?
A.All of them feel happy.
B.None of them feel happy.
C.Only a few of them stay at the countryside at last.
D.Some people in the countryside always fight with them, so they hate the countryside.
4. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph show?
A.They are happy to move back to the city.
B.They miss their friends in the countryside.
C.They still want to move to the countryside.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了为什么大多数人都喜欢听妈妈讲话。

【推荐2】We are often told to pay attention to what our mothers tell us. Most of us enjoy listening to our mothers speak. Scientists have found that compared to other people’s voices, our brains greatly prefer the voices of our own mothers.

Scientists from Stanford University, US, scanned (扫描) children’s brains while they were listening to different sounds, including their mothers’ voices. They found that 97 percent of the time, children could recognize (认出) their mothers’ voices at once.

Hearing their mothers’ voices makes children’s brains more active. We usually just use one part of our brain to deal with sounds when we hear something. But when we hear our mothers’ voices, many parts of the brain, including those that are responsible for reward (奖赏) and emotion (情感), start to work as well.

_______ It starts even before we’re born. When children are still in the womb (子宫) or have just been born, they hear their mothers talking. This makes babies feel comfortable and teaches them language and social skills, even though they are still very young. The babies learn to recognize their mothers’ voices as a rewarding sound. Later, when this sound is heard again, more attention is paid to it.

Some sounds are necessary for our life or please us. These sounds are recognized by our brains as rewarding sounds. Most human voices are not recognized in this way, since we hear them so often. But mothers’ voices are different. They bring us a lot of comfort.

【推荐3】Happiness is for everyone. You don’t need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or     1     and so on. Why? Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free time.

In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it.     2     When you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health. When you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you. When you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it.     3     All these are your happiness. If you notice a bit of them, you can see that happiness is always around you.

Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can’t be bought with money.     4    , because you have more chances to challenge yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving(旋转的)door. When it closes, it also opens.     5

A.When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you.
B.If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person.
C.those who have nice cars and a lot of money
D.And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too.
E.those who have no houses
F.When you meet with difficulties, you can give them up and be happy
G.When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy
