Now cities are full of cars. Some families even have two or more cars. Parking is a great problem, and so is the traffic in around the cities. Something will have to be done to change it. What will the cars of tomorrow be like?
Little cars may some day take the place of today's big cars. If everyone drives little cars in the future there will be less pollution in the air. There will also be more space for parking cars in cities, and the streets will be less crowded. Three little cars can fit in the space now needed for one car of the usual size.
The little cars will cost much less to own and to drive. Driving will be safer, too. What is more, these little cars can go about 65 kilometers per (每) hour.
Little cars of the future will be fine for getting around a city, but they will not be useful for long trips. If big cars are still used along with the small ones, two sets of roads will be needed in the future. Rivers are one of our most important natural resources(资源). Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation. Rivers also give food to eat, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun. In order to increase the supply (供给) of water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam across a river. Then people can use the water not only to provide water for their fields but also to make electricity for their homes and industries.

Rainforests are Earth’s oldest living ecosystems (生态系统), and some are in their present form for at least 70 million years. They are unbelievably rich, home to more than half of the world’s plant and animal species (物种) —even though they cover just 6% of Earth. Rainforests’ rich kinds are very important to our humans and our planet. They help change our climate and provide us with everyday products.

Roads are everywhere and sometimes seem like part of the natural views. But in fact, road building can have bad influence on both plant life and animal life. One bad environmental influence of roads is that they cause the movement of plant species from one area to another. When a new plant species gets into an area where it wasn’t growing before, the new plants compete for resources with the present plant life.

1. What do the three passages mainly talk about?
A.The environment pollution and protection.
B.The importance of natural resources and ecosystems.
C.The destruction (破坏) of ecosystems and natural resources.
2. How many uses of the rivers are mentioned in the first passage?
A.5.B.6.C.7.
3. In the last passage, what will the writer most probably write next?
A.How do people build the roads?

C.How does road building influence the animal life?
4. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passages?
A.Dam can be used for making electricity.
B.Road building is good for the ecosystems.
C.Rainforests are changing their forms all the time.
5. What can we learn from the passages?
A.We can do road and dam building as much as possible.
B.Rivers and rainforests are independent from the ecosystem.
C.Humans should protect the ecosystems while making use of natural resources.

New uses for old clothing

What do you think of the “new” hat I made for my sister? It used to be my mom’s sweater.

Nowadays, we’re more wasteful than ever—buying, using and throwing things away without thinking about the costs. We need to start living more responsibly (负责任地) but how? One answer is to upcycle (再生利用).

I started upcycling clothing. Making new things out of old clothes is the best way to mix my talent and my interest.

Do you upcycle? If so, what new things have you made? If not, why not give it a try?

Why don’t you give your old clothes to people in need? I even gave away the most expensive things I don’t wear anymore. So I can help the environment while giving something useful to people in need.

Good point! I’m talking about only the oldest clothing in your room—the clothes that are too old to be owned by others. The same idea goes for food waste at restaurants and supermarkets before upcycling food that can still be eaten, for example, using it to make soil. We should give it to those in need.

I’ve made the shopping bags out of T-shirts and the dog toys out of socks. Upcycling clothing is a fun hobby, but the most important thing is that it makes me feel like I’m leaving less wastefully.

3】When your pen is broken, the battery (电池) in your toy runs out, or you have some leftover (吃剩的) food, what do you do with these things? You will probably throw them all into one bin. But actually, all kinds of rubbish need to be sorted (分类) separately.

Garbage (垃圾) sorting is a big problem worldwide. In recent years, some Chinese cities have been working hard on it.

Shanghai has worked with Alipay to create a “green account (账户)” service for people. Account holders get points by sorting their garbage. Through the Alipay app, they can exchange the points for milk, phone cards and other products. The city is asking all of people to sort their garbage into four groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry.

Wet waste is also known as kitchen waste. “They are the things that you don’t want but that pigs can eat.” Guangzhou Daily explained.

Newspaper, metal, glass and other things that can be reused are recyclable waste.

Harmful waste includes things like medicine and batteries.

Finally, any waste that’s not wet, recyclable or harmful will go in the “dry waste” bin.

Many other Chinese cities are also doing this method to sort their garbage. For example. Shenzhen has been sorting its garbage into the same four groups since 2012. Students there also receive garbage-sorting guidebooks that they must study. China is improving its garbage-sorting efforts. There is still a long way to go. But it’s never too late to learn how to sort your garbage properly and protect the environment.

If you don’t sort your garbage, all of it will go to a landfill (垃圾填埋场) and be buried together. These landfills can take up large areas of ground that could be used for planting trees and crops. The electronic waste you throw away, such as batteries, may pollute the soil and groundwater (地下水). Other pieces of garbage, like the metal part of a pen, can be used to make other things if they are properly recycled.

1. How should we deal with all kinds of garbage?

B.Why we should sort our rubbish properly.
C.What some kinds of waste can pollute the environment.
D.How some kinds of waste can be reused and recycled.
5. What do we know about garbage sorting in China?
A.It started its garbage sorting system in 2012.
