【推荐1】During my elementary (基础的) school years, I used to compare my mom with my best friend Tiffany’s mom.
Tiffany’s mom always gave her lots of money to buy the most fashionable clothes and favorite food. Her mom allowed her to do anything she liked. I really admired Tiffany. My mom didn’t give me much pocket money and she always told me that I should behave myself. I was angry with her.
Whenever I didn’t get what I wanted, I would complain to my mom, Tiffany’s mom would give her that! I wish she were my mom. Every time, my mom would calmly say “Poor Tiffany”. I couldn’t understand her. “She shouldn’t be feeling sorry for Tiffany!” I thought. “She should be feeling sorry for me.”
One day, I couldn’t help saying to Mom, “Poor Tiffany? Lucky Tiffany! She gets everything she wants! Why do you feel sorry for her?”I burst into tears.
My mom sat down next to me and said softly. “Yes, I do feel sorry for her. I have been teaching you a lesson that she will never be taught.”
I looked up at her. “What are you talking about?”
Mom said with care, “One day she will really want something. Maybe she’ll find out that she can’t have it. Her mother won’t always be around to give her money, and what’s more, money can’t buy everything.”
She continued, “Ihave taught you useful lessons by not giving you everything you want. You’ll know how to be yourself and save money, but she won’t. You’ll understand that you need to work hard to get the things that you want but she won’t. When Tiffany is a grown woman, she’ll wake up one day and she will be wishing that she had a mom like the one you’ve got. Life lessons are more important than modern clothes and delicious food.”
It took some time, but I finally understood my mom’s words. Now I am a happy and successful woman.

【推荐2】I was shopping in Whole Foods Market when my cellphone rang. My daughter Julianna told me that she got the job she had applied for. She had just turned 14 and decided to spend this summer vacation on work. The things she wants are both long-term and immediate. She wants to freely buy things from Forever21 and save money for the famous college she’s decided to get into.

Several weeks before her birthday, Julianna asked me whether I’d allow her to work. Some of her friends’parents wouldn’t let their kids work, wanting them to focus on their studies and enjoy the last childhood freedom for as long as possible. I understood those parents. But I wanted her to spend less time on her electronic devices in her room and more time in the outside world.

The day after her birthday, Julianna immediately applied to an amusement park, which hires teens during busy summer months. I’d never seen Julianna so active. The day before the interview, we went over possible questions, including why she wanted to work at the amusement park, its most famous attraction, and what her previous work and volunteering experiences were. She seldom talked about anything else until the interview was over.

I never worked as a young teen. My husband, though, worked as a young teen at an amusement park. He shared some funny stories about his time working there. More importantly, the work contributed to his strong work ethic (道德准则) today. Studies also show that work can contribute to healthy development and that teens who work at times are more likely to attend four-year colleges and get degrees quickly.

Julianna used to be so careful about new experiences, but now she is doing something new. I realize it’s time to put aside my doubts and worries and believe she can learn the skills she needs to take care of herself.

1. What was the writer’s expectation of her daughter?
A.She could do better in her studies.
B.She could pay much attention to her health.
C.She could actively experience the real world.
D.She could spend her free time in a relaxing way.
2. What can we infer about Julianna from Paragraph 3?
A.She took the interview very seriously.
B.She wanted to improve the amusement park.
C.She wished to work together with her mom.
D.She had great confidence in getting the job.
3. What does the writer stress by referring to her husband’s experience and the studies?
A.The reason for her husband’s success.
B.The joy of working at an amusement park.
C.The relationship between work and education.
D.The positive influence of early work experience.
4. What is the best title for this passage?
A.How my daughter developed a new hobby
B.How I accepted my daughter’s journey of growth
C.How I guided my daughter through her life troubles
D.How my daughter achieved freedom and independence

【推荐3】Ann and her mother had lived in a small house as long as Ann could remember. Christmas was so close. Ann wished she could get a beautiful dress. But she knew how hard her mom worked. Maybe she could make a wish--Santa Claus would come...

Her classmates were talking about Christmas gifts.

“My aunt is going to give me a pretty branded doll again,” said Rita.

“I have told my parents about that expensive watch. They will buy it for me,” Tessi said.

Ann felt left out in those conversations. She had neither rich parents nor rich relatives to give her expensive gifts.

It was not just the gift that worried Ann. Her mother was working overtime and looked weak these days.

Days passed and soon it was Christmas Eve. Ann went to bed with a heavy heart. Ring ... Ring ... Ann jumped, hearing the alarm. Without much hope, she wondered if there were any gifts for her. She found a beautiful packet! There was a beautiful white dress and a short note inside. Ann read the note:

Dear Ann,
This dress is a gift for you for being a good girl.
Your loving friend,
Santa Claus

Ann looked into the note carefully. Then she realized that the handwriting was the same as her mother’s. Her mother had worked overtime to save money to buy this wonderful gift for her!
