I have three roses here: a red one, a yellow one and a white one. These roses are to thank three groups of people for the three most important things that I have learnt. These three things are friendship, effort and trust.

I give the red rose to my friends. When I started school here, my Chinese was not good, and some of my mistakes were very funny. I once tried to say “xiexie”, but I said “xiaxia” instead. Of course some people laughed, and I felt quite silly. But they were not laughing at me. They not only taught me to say many things in Chinese but also told me many interesting customs in China. Today, thanks to their kindness, my Chinese is much better, and I have been used to the life in China. So, let me say “xiexie” again to all of you for your help.

I give the white rose to my teachers. When I started running in the 800 metres, I always finished last and I just wanted to give up. But the PE teacher, Ms.Huang, helped me. She ran along with me, and she said, “You only really lose if you give up !” I still can't run fast enough, but I've learnt to try my best not only with running but with whatever else I do.

I give the yellow rose to my parents for teaching me that love is about trust. When I wanted to learn the violin, my father told me that I should work harder at math. I was disappointed. Then, on the morning of my birthday, I woke up to find a beautiful violin at my bedside. There was a note from my father, “I'm sure you will be good at music.I know that you will be better at maths.”

I'm sure that you all have your own memories about the happiness of the last three years, and the people whom you want to thank for, so let's all stand up and say, “Thank you, friends, teachers and parents! We love you!”

【推荐3】Last summer my son, Eric, left for university in another country. Our once lively house became quiet and lonely. I missed and worried him so much that I started sending him messages on the phone, mainly to say hello or to give him a word of warning.

One of my messages says, “So you told me you lost your wallet. If you are always careless,one day you’ll wake up and find yourself lost.”

I did get Eric’s messages, but most of them were about money. I was a bit angry.

They were not different from the notes he used to leave on the white board when he was at home.

“I bought a new pair of shoes. They cost me $90. Please help!”

“Money is running short because I’ve bought some books for my research paper. Help me please!”

Recently, however, Eric begins to send me all kinds of articles(文章). Some are funny, some are touching and some make me think. He knows I haven’t got many things to do in my free time. He says they will help me understand young men better and keep up with the times.

I read the articles slowly, like a careful student, with mixed feelings as well—my kid, who followed me around not long ago, has now become my teacher!

So I write back, “I’ve read all those articles, I’ll take them as a loving son’s hopes towards his mother. He must be thinking that his mother is still young enough to accept new things. That makes me feel proud. We parents can’t learn quickly and change in both body and mind. Thank you, my son.”

In this way we share ideas, with a gentle and beautiful language we seldom use. Every time I read those messages, I feel warm.

【推荐2】It wasn’t a very good week. On Tuesday, Sam’s father lost his job. Then on Wednesday, Sam’s mother said that the house rent was going up. On Friday, Rosa asked Sam to go to her birthday party, but he wasn’t happy. He had only one dollar and that wasn’t enough to buy a gift. He knew he couldn’t ask Mom or Dad for any money — not this week!

“Well,” Sam thought, “I don’t have time to worry about this. I have a report to write, and I need to go to the library.”

In the library, Sam found there was a book sale. A book got his attention. It was a cookbook of Chinese food. With one dollar, he bought the book. He thought Rosa might like it because he often saw Chinese food in her lunch box.

The party on Saturday was a lot of fun. Rosa opened all the gifts and thanked everyone. When she opened Sam’s gift, she paused(停顿) and didn’t say anything. Sam wondered if she liked the book. When Sam got home, he got an e-mail from Rosa.

Dear Sam,

Your gift was the nicest. How did you know I would like a cookbook of Chinese food? My grandma is from China. With the cookbook, I can make Chinese food for her. Thank you so much.
