And now, waste coffee grounds (咖啡渣) will be used to help power part of the city’s transportation system.

A technology company announced on Monday that some buses will be using a bio-fuel (生物燃料) that contains coffee oil.

The company, bio-bean, and its partner, Argent Energy, say they have made enough coffee oil to power one of London’s famous double-decker buses for a year.

The government agency Transport for London has been turning to bio-fuel to cut production of carbon emissions(二氧化碳排放). Carbon emissions are the gas produced by the burning of carbon, and the gas is released into the sky.

London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, said last month that his city has a “health problem caused directly by poor-quality air”. The government has taken steps to prevent people from driving cars that do not meet European Union emissions requirements.

Bio-bean said Londoners produce over 200,000 tons of waste coffee grounds a year. The company said it collects waste grounds from chain coffee shops and factories. The grounds are dried and processed to remove coffee oil.

“It’s a great example of what can be done when we start to re-imagine waste as an untapped wealth.” said one of bio-bean founders Arthur Kay. The coffee fuel technology has been receiving support from the oil company Royal Dutch Shell plc.

They hang from trees. They float in rivers and oceans. They are piled up in landfills. As many as 3 billion plastic bags are used every day in China. Our daily use of plastic products bas, for many years, been a leading cause of serious environmental problems around the world. China has drawn up new guidelines, trying to bring plastic pollution under control across the country in five years.

According to the new guidelines, non-biodegradable plastic bags will disappear in big cities including Beijing and Shanghai by the end of this year. Then the ban on some biodegradable plastic garbage will appear in these cities two years later. And that rule will have been in all parts of our country by late 2025.

Luckily, China will not start from zero. Late last year, the country introduced a national standard for biodegradable plastic shopping bags. Some places have gained valuable experience that others can learn from. For example, Jilin Province is leading the way by providing shopping bags that are eco-friendly in some local supermarkets.

Thinking of China’s consumer market, people know the biggest problems come from restaurants and online-shopping platforms, such as Taobao and Jingdong. They are using a large number of plastic products. It’s reported that nearly 25 billion plastic bags were used for deliveries in 2018. Most of them were hardly reused.

However, most Chinese people welcomed the government’s effort to cut the use of plastics. “Beijing is thinking about the problem seriously,” said Tang Damin, a member of Greenpeace East Asia in Beijing. He added thar the policy could be far more effective by using incentives such as a deposit return programme on plastic products.

【推荐3】Going green seems to be fad(时尚) for a lot of people these days. Whether that is good or bad, we can’t really say, but for the two of us, going green is not a fad but a lifestyle.
On April 22, 2011, we decided to go green every day for a whole year. This meant doing 365 different green things, and it also meant challenging ourselves to go green beyond easy things. Rather than recycle and reduce our energy, we had to think of 365 different green things to do and this was no easy task.
With the idea of going green every day for a year, Our Green Year started. My wife and I decided to educate people about how they could go green in their lives and hoped we could show people all the green things that could be done to help the environment. We wanted others to know that every little bit helps.
Over the course of Our Green Year, we completely changed our lifestyle. We now shop at organic(有机的) stores. We eat less meat and choose green food. We have greatly reduced our buying we don’t need. We have given away half of what we owned through websites. Our home is kept clean by vinegar(醋) and lemon juice, with no chemical cleaners(化学清洁剂). We make our own butter, enjoying the smell of home-made fresh bread. In our home, anyone caught doing something ungreen might be punished.
Our minds have been changed by Our Green Year. We are thankful for the chance to have been able to go green and educate others. We believe that we do have the power to change things and help our planet.
