I asked my dad if I had ever made him cry before because I couldn’t remember ever seeing him cry.
“There was once,” he said.
He told me that when I was one year old, he put a pen, a piece of paper money and a toy in front of me. He wanted to see which one I would pick. It’s a tradition that a lot of Chinese people do when their kids are one year old. According to this tradition, it shows what the kid will value most when he or she grows up. For example, if the kid takes the pen, it means he or she will be an intelligent person in the future. If the kid takes the money, it means he or she will value money more than others and become rich. If the kid takes the toy, it means he or she will like fun things and play a lot.
My father was doing it because he was curious (好奇的). It was interesting for him to see which one I would pick.
He said that I just sat there and stared at the three things. He sat across from me and waited to see the result.
According to him, I moved toward him and he held his breath. Then I pushed everything aside and went right into his arms. Tears came to his eyes. He didn’t realize that he was one of the choices.

Although I was the class clown at school, there’s an introverted side to my personality. That’s because I have a rarely seen disease that makes it hard for my brain to deal with the information what I see. Words swim on the page for me. I wanted to learn how to read but couldn’t.
In primary school, I didn’t talk to any teachers or family about this. I was clever at hiding it. When I had to write anything down, I guessed, forming what I hoped were the right words. I became good at learning by heart.
When I started secondary school, a student in class made me stand on a chair and read. It was terrible as a result I developed a bad stutter. I continued to fall through the net. The only thing I loved was practical biology. I wanted to be a doctor.
Then I left school and joined the army. I decided to be a doctor and trained hard. But things were discovered when I did a course in prehospital emergency care. I passed all my practical exams, preparing for them by watching others. The problem was the written exam. I was so hopeless but had to tell the examining doctor that I couldn’t read. He asked me to get back into education. I was 34.
I made up my mind to attend the Open University (OU) to do a medical degree. It was back to basics on the course. I knew the letters and some words, but my vocabulary was small. I paid for a tutor, who worked with me every week, teaching me to understand words through pictures.
It took me nine years to get that degree. Now, aged 47, I’m an ambassador for the OU, winning an award for receiving education so late in life. I teach prehospital emergency care to medical school students. I also teach children and adults with learning difficulties because I want to give others the chances I had.
I still struggle to read a menu if I’m not wearing my special glasses, but luckily there’s always someone around to lend me a hand. I look back and wonder how many other people have struggled with education and where they are now. My story suggests that no one should be discounted, ever.
