When the one-year anniversary of my mother’s passing came around, I found myself in the kitchen preparing some of her favorite dishes. As I put myself into cooking, some of the deep sadness I was experiencing at this one-year mark moved through me. I love my mom’s turkey soup and how she cooked the egg noodles right in it.
While the noodles boiled in the soup in my kitchen, I realized that I was reconnecting with my mother through food. I suddenly felt my mother at hand and was filled with her presence. I was so uplifted and excited that I began talking to her, imagining she were there.
“What else should we make?” I asked of us two, wanting to keep the talking from ending.
“Irish potato pancakes,” was the reply.
I hesitated. The thought of these brought up another loss. The last time I made potato pancakes was two and a half years ago. I had taken off my engagement ring to make the dough, and never found it again. Since then, I refused using that recipe even though I really liked those pancakes. It’s a bit silly.
My mom should have known better than to suggest these, I thought. She knew how upset I was about losing my ring. I had always called her when I lost something, even when I was away at college, even from across the country, even when I traveled abroad. She had abilities for helping me find my lost things, except this time.
But despite these hesitations, I found myself caught up in the happiness and celebration of the moment, and I reached for the cookbook without another thought of the ring. My mom did love Irish things, and these were delicious. I opened the large coffee-table cookbook and turned to the pancake recipe. Immediately, something at the bottom of the page caught my eye… It sparkled! I gasped in utter amazement! There, pressed into the pages of this book, was my diamond ring!
Cold and fear ran up and down my body as my mind raced to consider how this was at all possible. Hadn’t I used the book for other recipes in the course of almost three years? Wouldn’t the ring have slipped out during the packing and unpacking of two household moves? Hadn’t I checked the book for the ring when I had lost it?
My heart was filled with thankfulness and wonder. I slipped my ring onto my shaking finger, and a smile filled my spirit as I whispered, “Thanks, Mom.”
That day, I made potato pancakes in the shape of hearts.

A Daughter’s Letter
Dear Mum,①Today is my birthday. I’m writing you this letter because I want you to know how much I love you.
②A few days ago, we learned an English poem named Mom Knows Best. I felt strong mother’s love between the lines, and it reminded me of you, Mum! In class, Miss Li recalled that what her mum had done for her and how her mum had encouraged her. But she mentioned that she felt really regretful because she had no chance to say “I love you” to her mum, for her mother had passed away. This made me think a lot. It seems that I’ve never told you “I love you”, so I can’t wait to write the letter.
③I still remember the times when you held my hand and counted steps with me as we walked along. You told me stones about the brave elephant and encouraged me to be a girl with a positive attitude. I also remember that in our small flat, you read books at your desk while I played with my toys on the bed nearby. In cool autumns, we took many walks along the street, chatting and laughing together. My childhood was filled with these warm memories. Now, I see what an influence you’ve had on my life.
④Time flies and so much has happened. There have been good and bad times, successes and failures, but you were always by my side. When I won the swimming prize, you smiled and said you were proud of me. When I failed my math exam, you encouraged me and said that everything would be fine. Your words helped me to deal with all my difficulties. Now, whenever I have problems, I always think of your words and they really help me so much.
⑤Mum, because of you, I’m brave and strong; because of you, I’m full of power and energy; because of you, I’m living a wonderful life. I can’t help but say, “Mum, I love you!”
Love,
Daughter

Why do Chinese players always win the first prize in the main table tennis events? Thomas J. Scheuer from the US studies at Tsinghua University. China has many talented and really hard-working table tennis players. Scheuer also heard another reason is that there are lots of ping-pong fans (迷) in China. Almost everyone can play a little. There, many kids were practicing. A boy said he hoped that he could be an excellent player like Ma Long one day.
The visit made Scheuer truly admire (钦佩) great interests that Chinese people have for table tennis.
