We all know Archimedes(阿基米德) was a clever scientist. Using a good method, he     1     the king that his crown was not made of pure gold. However, did you know that Archimedes was also a(n)     2    ? In 215 BC, the Roman army invaded Archimedes' hometown. He turned himself away from math and began to invent some war machines. One of the machines was called the Archimedes' Claw. It was a big iron claw. The Roman army called the "ship beaters". It was so big that it must be controlled by almost all the     3     of the whole country. But it could pick up enemy ships and throw them far into the sea.   

Archimedes also invented the stone thrower. This machine could throw large stones at Roman ships from far away. The Romans were surprised     4     the invention. They even     5     a stone thrower and then made it for their own use.

Perhaps the greatest among all Archimedes' war machines was the "death ray". This was actually a set of mirrors. These mirrors could     6     sunlight onto Roman ships and cause the wooden ships to catch fire. One ship after another sank into the sea.     7     of Roman soldiers were killed in the fire. You can imagine their anxious eyes     8     they saw the "death ray".

The iron claw, the stone thrower and the "death ray" all did a good job. They kept the Roman army away. What a       9     mind Archimedes had! Using his great knowledge, he     10    protected his home city.

Long ago, a hawk lived on the top of a hill. At the     1     of the hill, there lived a crow. The crow was very foolish. He would imitate (模仿) everyone. The hawk would fly down the hill every day in     2     of food. The crow watched the hawk circling in the air for long hours and swooping (猛冲) down when he saw his prey (猎物). The crow thought, “If the hawk can do that, I can, too. One day, I will     3     the hawk that I can do the same thing.” A few days later, as the hawk was circling in the air, the crow decided to do the same. A baby rabbit     4     came out of the bushes and the hawk and the crow saw the rabbit at the same time. Before the crow could move, the hawk swooped down, caught hold of the rabbit in his strong sharp talons (爪) and flew away. “Swoosh!” was all the crow could hear as the hawk     5     into the sky with his prey. “Hmm! That is no great skill,” thought the crow, angrily. Next moment he spotted a big fat mouse coming out of a hole. Without     6     time, the crow swooped down. Like the hawk, he tried to catch the mouse in his claws. But the mouse saw the crow and moved away. The crow crashed against a rock. “Eeeaaa!”     7     the crow in pain. Just then the hawk came flying down. “I hope, now you know that it is not easy to     8     and that it is not easy to imitate, either,” said the hawk as he flew away.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. I’m here today to share a good lesson with you. It is a true story about an overseas student     1     in Germany.

After years of hard work, this student graduated with amazing achievements. Everyone thought he was going to get a good     2     easily and have a bright future. But to his disappointment he was not even given the     3     for an interview! The third time he was refused, he couldn’t help telephoning the company to ask     4     they didn’t want him. The answer was simple.

“We don’t offer jobs to     5     people in Germany.

What was wrong, you might wonder? The truth is, shortly after he arrived in Germany, this clever student found that it was     6     to skip buying subway tickets.     7     in order to save money, he often went without a ticket. As a result, he had been caught without a ticket in the subway     8     times.

From this story, we     9     that we may get short-term benefits in dishonest ways, but the truth will come out sooner or later and the cost is high. So remember: honesty is the    10     rule.
