Are you interested in some holiday information? Welcome to our Festival—Informing Program to get to know some winter festivals!
Diwali
Diwali is a five-day festival of lights celebrated by Indians worldwide in October or November. As part of the festivities, houses, stores and other public places are all decorated with diyas. People celebrate Diwali by cleaning their homes, then leaving the windows and doors of their houses open so that Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, can come in. They dress up in new clothes, exchange gifts, play card games and eat together.
Hanukkah
Hanukkah begins in November or December and lasts for eight days. This Jewish festival celebrates the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem in 165 BC. It's celebrated by lighting one candle each night on a special candleholder. Kids often play games during Hanukkah The most popular game includes a dreidel, a four—sided spinning top with Jewish letters on each side.
Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa is to celebrate African heritage and culture. It was created in 1966 by Dr Maulana Karenga, a professor of Africana Studies and California State University, Long Beach. The festival begins on Dec. 26 and ends on Jan. 1. On each of the nights, the family gathers and a child lights one of the candles on the Kinara (candleholder), and discusses one of the seven principles, which are ideals created by Karenga. People also celebrate Kwanzaa with meals, music, poetry and dancing.
Chinese New Year
The Chinese New Year, or the Spring Festival, falls between mid-January and mid-to-late February and usually lasts for fifteen days. People celebrate by cleaning their homes, then decorating with red paper cutouts, lanterns, etc. Fireworks are set off and there are dragon and lion dances. Family members come together to celebrate. Children receive “luck” money, given in red envelopes.

Joey, who was six at the time, had the day off from school. His father, Joe Welch, a 50-year-old photographer, planned to spend the day boating in the huge river. Joe had never before been into the muddy waters, which were famous for crocodiles (鳄鱼). He had researched what to do if they encountered one-just in case.
Joe turned to scan the boat, less than 20 feet from the water’s edge and then he was busy making some sandwiches at a wildlife refuge. Seconds later, he heard a splash and a scream. Joey had slipped at the edge of the water. When Joe rushed there, he saw his son’s right arm in the jaws of a crocodile which was at least eight feet long and close to 200 pounds. Time seemed to stop as Joe ran toward his son. The river was almost three feet deep. As Joey struggled and screamed, Joe began pulling him back toward the bank. A young man ran over, screaming at Joe to pull his son out of the water. But Joe feared what would happen to Joey’s arm if he pulled too hard. While Joe knocked on the beast’s head, the young man kicked its stomach. After the stranger’s three or four kicks, the crocodile released Joey and escaped back into the water. Joe picked up his son and found that he’d suffered only a few cuts and scrapes. Joe thanked the stranger and sped home. A nearby hospital determined that Joey was OK.
Joe has tried to find out who helped save his son, but he has learned only that the man was a boxer from Spain. He had been in the country visiting his family. “ He’ s like an angel,” Joe says.

When I was a boy there were no smart phones, and our television only got one channel clearly. Still, I was never bored. The fields, hills, and woodlands around my home were the perfect playground. I can remember once hiking to a nearby lake. At the backside of it I was amazed to find an old dirt road that I had never seen before. It was full of muddy tracks and deep woods bordered it on both sides, but exploring it still seemed like a fine adventure.
I walked on and on for hours. I was sure my guardian angel was whispering in my ear “Turn around and head back home”, but I was stubborn, so I walked on. There was still neither a car nor a house in sight. I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew scared. I didn’t want to end up trapped on this road, and I was worried that it would be dark before I could make my way back to the lake again.
I continued to walk on with something growing inside of me. My heart was pounding and my legs were aching. I was almost in tears when I turned one last curve and saw something in the distance. It was a house that I recognized. I jumped up and down and laughed out loud. It was still over a mile away, but my legs felt like feathers and I hurried back to my house in no time. I walked in with a big smile on my face just in time for dinner.
I remembered this recently when I saw a sign that said “All roads lead home”. It is true. In life, all roads, no matter how they twist and turn, can lead us home again. What is important, though, is how we travel them. Are we going to go forth in fear or are we going to go forth in faith? Are we going to make this life a terrible trip or are we going to make this life a joyful journey? The choice is ours.

B.All roads lead home. |

D.Every effort is worthwhile. |
Even the hardest days contain lessons that will help you be a better person. Feeling down?Consider these things to remember when you're having a bad day.
No one promised life would be perfect. If you look for perfection, you'll never be content. Don't condition your happiness on meeting every expectation you set for yourself. It is good to be ambitious, but you'll never be perfect. If you expect otherwise, your life will be filled with disappointments.
Success doesn't happen overnight. Trees__that__are__slow__to__grow__bear__the__best__fruit.__Don't kid yourself into thinking success will come quickly. It isn't easy to be patient, but anything worth doing requires time. If you get frustrated, remind yourself why your goal is important.
There is a lesson in every struggle. And once the storm is over, you won't remember how you made it through or how you managed to survive. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won't be the same person who walked in. That's what this storm's all about. Don't complain about how terrible your life is. If you search for the lesson in your present struggle, you'll be able to make positive changes that would prevent similar situations in the future.
Without hard times, you wouldn't appreciate the good ones. Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to give in, that is strength. It is hard to find much to smile about when you fail, but how else would you improve yourself? If you look at failure as a part of your evolutionary process, you'll stay positive and pursue your goals for as long as it takes.
