Everybody knows how important it is for students to get a good night’s sleep every night. Most experts agree that teenagers need to get 8 hours of sleep a night. However, I know that most of you get much less sleep than that.
I read an interesting article in a teachers’ magazine recently. They did a study of 848 students in Wales. Worryingly, the results showed that teenagers are facing a new problem. They may go to bed and get up at appropriate (恰当的) times but a growing number are waking up in the middle of the night not to use the bathroom or have a snack but because of a new phenomenon: FOMO-fear of missing out!
According to the article, schoolchildren are suffering because of a growing trend to wake up during the night to check social media. Afraid of missing a comment or chance to take part in a chat, teenagers are waking at all times of the night, going online. All this happens when they should be sound asleep.
The study shows that students who use social media during the night are more likely to suffer from sadness and anxiety. Experts are worried about this growing trend and the report shows some worrying statistics (数据) that I’d like to share with you.
23% of 12 to 15-year-olds wake up nearly every night to use social media. Another 15% wake up at night once a week for the same reason. One in three students are tired all the time.
So I’d like to ask you to be responsible when it comes to social media. Be brave! Switch off your mobile phones at night. The world won’t end and your social media will be waiting to greet you in the morning! I give you my word that you won’t have missed anything important.

In those countries, women and girls spend several hours collecting water, but often polluted, far away from their families. The polluted water more or less influences their health. In this case, there is an urgent(迫切的)need for people in developing countries to have access to(有机会或权利使用)clean water to improve their health.
Here is a short story about Hadjara Zakari, a 12-year-old girl in Niger. Having access to clean water changed her life. She learned about the importance of hand-washing when the school first received clean water three years ago. That evening, she told her father, “You shouldn’t eat with me unless you clean your hands.” Her father was very angry and shouted at her, “It’s not up to you to tell me what to do!” Stunned(目瞪口呆的), Hadjara sat in silence. But she knew she was right. In protest, Hadjara refused to eat dinner that night. After her father questioned Hadjara’s head teacher, he understood the importance of hand-washing and his daughter’s intentions(目的). The girl really wanted her family to live longer and healthier lives.
For people in developing countries, clean water can change many things, especially improve their health. So, from now on, let’s avoid wasting water and take action to save water, which is important to people all over the world.

China has banned (禁止) free plastic bags at shops and supermarkets, and people have to pay for using plastic bags. The rule started on June 1. It came because our country tried to make litter less. Making super-thin (超薄) plastic bags has also been banned.
The Chinese once used about 3,000,000,000 plastic shopping bags a day, and they have caused pollution of the environment. The bags have become a main cause of plastic pollution because they are easy to break and people throw them away here and there. So the Chinese people are encouraged to bring theft own bags for shopping.
What kind of shopping bag is the best to bring? Some students in Chongqing have a good idea. They make their own shopping bags. They use old clothes to make cloth bags, and send them to their parents as presents. They also ask theft parents and friends to use cloth bags instead of plastic ones. They think it is their duty to protect the environment.

Hand a smartphone to a child, and he will find out how to use it to have fun in seconds. The fast development of technology means that children are becoming computer experts at a very young age.
However, there are some worries about how this tech influences childhood development. We are walking into unknown area as the generations past have never had this same kind of experience like them.
While many people see the bad influence of such technology usage, there are also bright side. The real question is what parents and teachers can do to make use of the technology in suitable ways, without letting children become slaves (奴隶) to it.
A.Some of them may even be able to help parents with their online work! |
B.Parents and adults can help children get the advantages of technology in many ways. |

【推荐1】Recently, some people have complained about the purposefully addictive (上瘾的) designs of smartphones and social media, which make it hard for anyone to put them down, especially teens. Now, a new report in Emotion gives facts that back up what these people said.
According to the report, young people’s life satisfaction and happiness have dropped since 2012, the year the percentage of teens owning smartphones started increasing rapidly. The report also finds that teens’ psychological (心理的) health gets worse the more hours a week they spend on screens.
Jean Twenge is the lead writer of the report. She graphed (制图) the connection between happiness and screen activities, such as social media, texting, gaming, and video chats. She also graphed the connection between happiness and non-screen activities, including sports, reading, and face-to-face communications. She called the relationship between screen and non-screen activities “zero sum”—if you are doing one, it takes time away from the others.
Diane Tanman complains that her sons are like that. They are 11 and 15. They used to play games in fields, and it made them happier. These days, her sons are more into online games. Many of the games have rewards (奖励) built in to keep players coming back. “It’s just junk food for the brain,” Tanman said.
Ed Lazzara says his 12-year-old son Leo is a fan of video games. After playing a lot, Leo gets more upset and uncomfortable. He wants his son to play fewer video games.
However, totally staying away from electronic devices (设备) doesn’t lead to happiness, either. Twenge and her co-writers found that the happiest teens used electronic devices a little less than an hour daily. After a daily hour of screen time, unhappiness rises in relation to increasing screen time.
Spending time in front of a screen is a normal part of being a teenager. Many schools require students to be online and to use iPads or other devices to do their work. But teachers and parents have also complained that technology can get in the way of learning when teens use their devices for things other than their studies.
If we recognize how screen time influences young minds, we can help teens use technology better and protect their psychological health in the process. Screen time is like ice cream. Sure, we can have some once in a while, but it shouldn’t be part of our everyday lives.

But during COVID-19, there is a problem: everyone wears masks. Scientists are trying to solve this problem. For example, Engineering & Technology magazine reports that Hanwang, a tech company in Beijing, has made a new system. It can recognize 95 percent of people when they wear masks.
What’s the secret? It’s all about your eyes.
Marios Savvides from Carnegie Mellon University, US, studies facial recognition. As we get older, he says, our faces change shape. But the area around our eyes doesn’t. It stays the same-even if we put on weight. As long as there are enough data from the area of our eyes, the cameras can recognize us.
Tech5 is another facial-recognition company. The Swiss company’s product scans(扫描)the shape of your face. It also scans your iris(虹膜), which is the colored part of your eyes. Tech5 hopes to ignore(忽略)all of the face below the nose.
This kind of software is more important than just unlocking your phone. “It can detect crime suspects(寻找犯罪嫌疑人)and terrorists(even when they wear masks), ” said Huang Lei from Hanwang. Hanwang’s technology is used by Chinese police in places like subway stations and airports. Similar technology is used by the United States Air Force.
Huang pointed out one big weakness: it fails when people wear both a mask and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost, ” Huang said.

Thanks to a couple of American scientists, this situation could become real. Swadesh Chaudhuri and Derek Lovely have invented the “bacteria battery”. This kind of battery gets its power from bacteria that eats sugar and turns it into electricity.
“This is a special organism (有机体),”Lovely said. “You can get enough electricity to power a cell phone battery for about four days from a spoonful of sugar.”
In the past, bacteria batteries have been expensive and not long-lasting. But this battery uses a more efficient bacterium that can turn 80 percent of sugar into electrical energy. This is 30 percent more than similar batteries can manage.
The bacteria battery could become as small as a household battery. It is also cheap and stable, because sugar can be taken from waste and crops.
But the sugar-to-electricity process is slow: it could take weeks for the bacteria to change a cup of sugar into electricity. And it produces “greenhouse” gases which pollute the environment.
The scientists understand there is a lot more work to be done. “It is still young,” said Lovely.
“Where we are now is where solar power was 20 or 30 years ago.”
He also believes the battery will be used in scientific equipment at the bottom of the ocean.
Other ideas include using sugar in the blood to run medical devices in the human body and taking sugar from animal waste to provide energy to power homes in rural areas.

When do we realize that we need to change diets? When none of our shirts and jeans would fit us. When do we stop eating candies and chocolates? When all of our teeth have fallen off. We see the warning signs when things get difficult.
Most of us will learn about unlocking our self-improvement power only when the whole world falls apart. We think and feel this way because it is not easy to change. However, change becomes more painful when we pay no attention to it.
Change will happen, like it or hate it. At one point or another, we are all going to finally unlock our self-improvement power, not because the world says so, but because we realize it’s good for ourselves.
Happy people don’t just accept change; they welcome it. Unlocking our self-improvement power means unlocking ourselves out of the box of thought that is just the way we are. It is such a poor excuse for people who fear change.
Jane always tells everyone that she is afraid of being around groups of people. Over the years, that is what Jane has believed. Every time a great crowd come, she steps back and locks herself up in a room. Jane not only believes in her story, but lives it!
If we look at things in a different way, we might have greater fun. Doing exercise three times a week would lead to a healthier life. Reading books every day would build up knowledge. And only when we are enjoying the whole process (过程) of unlocking out self-improvement power, we will realize that we can take things light and become happy.

According to the Supreme People’s Court’s regulation, text messages emails and content posted on Websites or instant messaging platforms can be used as evidence(证据)in civil lawsuits(民事诉讼). The idea of digital evidence was first introduced as part of China’s Civil Procedure Law in 2012. However, the recent regulation has made it clearer.
“This is the first time the Supreme People’s Court has clarified(阐明)the scope(范围)of digital evidence, especially on social media platforms and messaging services,”Li Ya, a lawyer in Beijing, told China Daily.
The regulation was introduced to keep up with changes in social development. Social media activity has become a part of most people’s lives. Therefore, digital evidence is playing an increasingly important role in civil and criminal lawsuits.
According to the regulation, if people plan to use digital evidence in a lawsuit, they have to first prove that they use the app or website that evidence comes from. Second, they must prove a original and complete record of the evidence. For example, if you lend somebody money through WeChat, you must keep the original transfer records and conversations on the app.
However, there are still questions about the regulation. Some point out that the regulation will not necessarily help in every case. “How to make sure a microblog is posted by the real microblogger is a challenge,” Li said.
