10 . THE PONY EXPRESS(驿马快递)
This advertisement(广告) appeared in the US in 1860. The Pony Express wanted young men who were expert—or very good-horse riders. The Pony Express carried mail between the middle of the country and California in the west—a distance of about 3000 kilometers.
Many riders and horses were needed. Horses were kept at more than 100 stations along the way. The riders stopped at these, quickly changed horses and then continued riding. Each rider rode for about 120 kilometers, and then gave his bag of mail to the next rider. The whole trip needed about twenty riders and took about ten days. In those days, that was quick.
Pony Express riders had to be light so the horses could go fast. That's why the advertisement asked for “skinny, wiry fellows” —skinny and wiry mean thin. Some riders were as young as fourteen.
The riders had to be “willing to risk death daily”. Falling from a horse was just one of the dangers of the job. The Pony Express had about eighty riders and about 500 horses, and a number of them died. But they only ever lost one bag of letters.
The Pony Express stopped after only nineteen months. In October 1861, a new type of communication connected the east with the west of the US—the telegraph. It used wires and electricity. Telegraph messages arrived after a few minutes instead of ten days. Nobody needed the Pony Express after that, but it has become a famous part of the history of the US.
