It is time for Mrs. Brown’ s class. Mrs. Brown asks her students a question: Do smartphones bring us closer together or drive (迫使) us further apart? The students show great interest in the discussion.
David:
I think smartphones drive us further apart. When you sit in a busy restaurant, watch the guests waiting for their meals.
Alice:

2 . Should kids be allowed to use mobile phones in school? There has been a lot of discussion about it. Without question, kids do not need mobile phones in school. Some people may feel that kids need phones for safety reasons; however, it’s not good or necessary for them to use mobile phones at school.
Firstly, there are phones in most modern classrooms nowadays. If kids need to call their parents or whatever, they can use one of the phones in the school. There is really no reason for students to have a phone with them.
Besides, mobile phones can be a big distraction (干扰) during the school day. If kids bring their phones to class and start to use them, they won’t pay much attention (注意力) to their schoolwork. Because there are too many games and apps on phones. They can pull kids’ attention away from things they should do at school. After all, there have been many other things that distract kids away from their lessons.
What’s worse, mobile phones can also be another way that kids bully (欺凌) each other. In some ways, kids are mean to each other in school. Phones would just be another way for mean-spirited kids to hurt others. Unluckily, a few kids always go out of their way to give others a hard time. And if mobile phones are allowed in school, it will give them one more tool to hurt others.
In a word, I cannot think of any good reasons why kids need to have mobile phones at school. Phones would just be a distraction and could lead to more bullying in school.

5 . Think about how many ways there are for you to communicate today. You can send a letter or pick up the phone and make a call. But today, one of the most popular ways to communicate is called instant messaging (即时信息) (IM). In any instant messaging system (系统), you type a little text message on your computer, press the “Send” button, and your message instantly shows up on your friend’s screen. But how does it work?
Actually, the whole process is very cool. In the 1980s, you could sit down at a computer at any big university. Up to 100 people would be logged in (登录) and share the computer because the computers were very expensive at that time. You could type a command (指令) to send an instant message to anyone logged in the same computer. It felt like everyone was connected together no matter where they were sitting.
Today, you can communicate with anyone in the world. All you need is an instant messaging program installed (安装) on your computer. There are many programs to choose from. AOL’s instant messenger is probably the most popular right now. MSN has one. Google has Google Talk.
When you’re ready, you create an account (账户). Next, you need to find out the IM names your friends use. Add their IM names to your IM program. Click on the friend you want to talk to and then type away. When you click “Send”, your friend gets the message instantly.
However, behind the scenes, amazing things are happening. Your IM program is communicating with a computer called a server. All your friends’ computers are communicating with a server, too. Your computer is often chatting with it to make everything happen. The network called the Internet makes it all possible.

Writing letters and making cards are also good for children. When they write letters, they learn to show their feelings with words, which is helpful for their writing. 8 . Time flies when you play on your smartphone. But when you get down to the real business of work and study, one hour feels like a year. Why are we so attracted by smartphones but easily bored by studying?
It all boils down to something small and hard to see: dopamine (多巴胺). Dopamine is a “pleasure chemical” that makes people feel good. Our brains give it out when we eat yummy food, after we exercise or when we get a prize.
Compared with studying, playing on smartphones causes our brains to give out more dopamine. For example, checking your phone for a text leads to a 400 percent increase in dopamine. But why?
When we visit social media, we don’t know what we’ll see next, or who will give opinions about things we post. This “magic of maybe”, makes the dopamine system active. We get excited wondering if we have messages from our friends. When our expectations are met, dopamine is given out.
And to find more dopamine, we continue checking our phones. Studying doesn’t provide such magic. Without this excitement, we get bored much more easily.
Can we do something to change that? According to scientists, apps can become less attractive if we turn off notifications or change the screen colors to black and white. We can also set time limits on apps to avoid overusing them.
“As for studying, you could check your progress daily or weekly and reward yourself for it”, said Daniel Wong, writer of The Happy Student, “You could also search for interesting topics connected with your textbook. Use what you’ve learned to make an influence in the real world. This will make knowledge much more interesting to learn”.
