1 . Feng Jing is an 8-year-old student from Guangdong. Because of a terrible disease (疾病), the boy had to stay in Shenzhen Children’s Hospital for months. The long stay in the hospital made Feng’s mother worried. “My son enjoyed learning at school. However, after he came here, he spent a lot of time playing online games,” the mother said.
Luckily, a volunteer from a reading program came to help Feng. The volunteer read interesting books to Feng. Feng’s mother was happy to see that. The boy could spend more time on books. And that stopped him from using phones.
Chen Jie, a woman from Shenzhen Children’s Library, is in charge of (负责) the reading program. “Why do we have the program? Because we want to give better reading service to kids in hospital. We hope it can help them get interested in reading and feel the fun of reading,” Chen said.
Now, the program has around 70 volunteers. They’re from all walks of life (各行各业), such as teachers and reporters. Joy Yang is one of the volunteers. “I’m glad to give a hand to those kids in need. What comes to mind when you think of technology? Many people might picture flying cars or space planes. Others might think of today’s smart devices (设备) . But technology is much more than that. It includes any object created to solve a problem. Many simple tools are examples of technology. Paper is an example of technology!
What problem did paper solve? Well, human beings were writing for thousands of years before paper existed (存在). Early writers used many materials. Many of these made writing difficult. Some people carved words on clay or stone tablets. Others wrote on silk, which was very costly.
In China, ancient people wrote on bamboo. They used long bamboo strips. Then, they tied the strips together to make books. This process was very long. It made heavy books that were difficult to carry. This was a problem. In 105 CE, a man named Cai Lun came up with a solution. He was a Chinese court official (官员) who often used bamboo for writing and reading. He knew how inconvenient it was and set out to find a better way. Cai had the idea to mix tree bark, fishing net, and cloth. The result was a lighter material that was easy to write on. Cai Lun had invented paper.
Cai Lun brought his invention to the Chinese emperor. Cai and his apprentice (学徒), Zuo Bo, improved his paper-making process. Soon, the use of paper spread throughout China. Eventually, paper also spread to central Asia and the Middle East in the 7th Century. Later, it made it to Europe, though it’s unclear how. Middle Eastern traders may have brought it there. Another theory is that Marco Polo brought paper from China. Paper has changed a lot since 105 CE. Today, paper is made almost entirely from trees. It comes in many forms and colors, and it serves a number of purposes.
Can you imagine a world without paper? What would you write on at school? What would people draw and color on? Paper is one technology that certainly improved many parts of life!

A new and exciting invention now allows deaf people to see conversations in real time. Using augmented reality (AR) glasses and a smartphone, deaf and hearing-impaired (听力受损的) people are also able to join in everyday conversations.
The AR glasses were developed by Dan Scarfe after he had Christmas dinner with his family. The man saw his 97-year-old hearing-impaired grandfather sitting alone in silence while the rest of the family were talking excitedly. The images of his grandfather always watching TV shows with subtitles (字幕) crossed Scarfe’s mind. He suddenly realized that maybe the AR glasses could help.
Scarfe got to work, partnering with Nreal, an AR glasses maker. Six months later, a new pair of AR glasses came out. The glasses have a microphone that receives the audio (音频) from the environment and sends it to a connected smartphone. The phone then creates subtitles from that audio. By special software, these subtitles then appear on the user’s glasses screen.
The company first tested the glasses in the UK. The UK was chosen as a testing ground as over 12 million adults in Britain have hearing loss. However, when the product goes global, it could change the lives of some 430 million people. This represents 5% of the world’s population and includes 70 million people with total hearing loss.
This is a game changer for the deaf. Mark Atkinson, who is using the AR glasses, says, “As a deaf person myself, I am blown away by this new technology. When I tried on the glasses for the first time, I was so surprised. Real-time subtitles made me become part of the conversation as never before.”
