A First Aid Experience
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________3 . There is nothing more important than the safety of our children. Did you know that unintentional injury(意外伤害) is the main cause of death in children under 14 years old and with a third of them happening in the home? One of the top reasons a child under the age of three will visit an emergency room is because of household injuries and sadly, 70% of children who die from unintentional injuries are under the age of four. Every room in the home will have its own set of child safety problems. Two of the main danger zones are the kitchen and the bathroom.
Before I became a young mother, I crawled(爬) around the house on my hands and knees to see things from a child’s perspective(视角). You would be amazed at what you can discover by doing something so simple. We didn’t have toilet covers. A child is top heavy because their heads are bigger than their bodies and can easily fall into the toilet.
You might be surprised with the number of children falling out of windows every year, especially during the summer months. Something as simple as a child leaning against a window screen can result in a serious injury. The best way to prevent this type of injury is by setting up a child safety window guard.
As parents, we do the best we can by providing as much protection as possible to make sure of the safety of children. And as there are so many products(产品) out there to help us do this, there is nothing like good old-fashioned supervision(监护). So, use common sense and products that help to keep your child safe, and you will have provided a safe environment for your children.

Leo Ajayi, aged 15, and Jim Green, aged 14, were good friends. Every autumn the two families would go together on a trip to the Rocky Mountains. This year, under the guidance of park workers, they camped on the hillside. After putting up the tents (帐篷), the two boys announced to climb Cathedral Mountain nearby on their own next morning and promised their parents to return before dark
Early the following day, the friends set off with a bag packed with food and water. Along the winding path, they admired a sea of colourful leaves spreading beneath their feet. As they got near to the top, the path was rocky and less-traveled. After three hours, they reached the top and enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop. Lost in the breathtaking scenery, they felt refreshed from tiredness. How worthwhile the trip was
Having got enough rest, Leo and Jim decided to climb down. Suddenly, trouble began. On one very dangerous part of the mountain, Jim fell three metres off the side of the path. Leo climbed down to where Jim was and found him badly injured and not able to move
“Help!” Leo shouted. NO REPLY. “Help! Help!” Leo almost cried. But still no replies. “If only I had brought my mobile phone in the bag,” Leo thought, regretful and sad. Taking a deep breath, he tried to calm himself down. Then he noticed Jim was bleeding. So he cleaned the dirt and blood from Jim’s face and hands, and then tried to help Jim stand up, but Jim’s right leg was hurting too much. They had to wait and hope that help would come. While they waited for help, Leo gave Jim his food and water and let him lie on his jacket. Leo used an extra shirt to keep Jim warm and they rested together against a rock. However, as darkness started to fall, the weather turned cold and windy and help still didn’t arrive.

My friend James did some first-aid training last week to learn the fundamentals of the CPR. And he asked if I’d ever done the same.
“Yes,” I said, “…and no.”
Because, yes, I’ve attended several resuscitation (复苏) sessions over the years.
What’s the problem? Every time I’ve had this type of training, it’s been a perfectly good opportunity to learn: an important topic, taught well, in a focused environment, with plenty to see, hear and do. I’ve always taken it seriously, too, and been focused. And I’ve always come away with a wealth of information.
Here’s what I should have done — and what you can do now — to make sure any training doesn’t go to waste.
•
• Challenge your recall later.
• Keep coming back. Put a note in your diary to test yourself again in a week, then ten days after that, then a month on…leaving longer gaps between checks.
Talking to James has inspired me to book myself onto yet another CPR course. But this time I’m determined to do it right. Remember that it’s the next day when the real training begins.
A.Test yourself before you start. |
B.Wait a day, then see how much you still know. |
C.Stay curious about what you are eager to know. |
D.All the basic information has stuck in your mind. |
E.But no, I don’t exactly feel “trained” to save lives. |
F.Yet virtually nothing has ever made it to my longterm memory. |
G.Use the questions you wrote on the day to keep challenging yourself. |
6 . Several years ago, I was at a pre-season football practice at a high school where I was working with the team on a concussion (脑震荡) research project. The players were lined up in two rows facing each other and with little more instruction from the coach than, “on the whistle, hit the man across from you”, great concern rushed through my mind.
Professional sports get the lion’s share of attention, but over three million children and teenagers in the United States play the same game. This directly places concussions as a significant public health concern for all.
However, for decades, concussion has been considered a temporary injury with no long-term consequences. Many athletes will do just about anything to stay on the field and “play through the pain” as a sign of toughness. In 2005, with the release of the brain tissue pathology (病理学) report of Mike Webster a, a retired National Football League player, our thinking on concussion began to shift. Since then, public attention has focused on this link between brain injury and blows to the head. As our understanding of concussion progressed to understanding its significance as an injury, so too did the development of player equipment.
In the early 1900s football was played without helmets (头盔), but severe injuries, like skull fractures, led to the occasional use of leather helmets in the 1920s.The first facemask entered the game in the 1950s. Modern helmets use advanced shell materials, have moveable panels to absorb forces, and multi-layered padding that responds to different impacts. Companies will continue to improve helmets as new materials become available, guided by the newest science.
Sports are an important part of a society’s culture and they give millions of children much-needed exercise. Yet, participation in any sport carries injury risk, and concussion will always be part of that. As those children become adults and make sport their hobby or even career, ensuring them play safely at all levels is essential.

Accidents happen, and it is certainly not possible to ensure that drowning incidents don’t occur. However, there are many steps you can take to reduce the possibility.

It is always best to swim with a lifeguard on duty. This is important for everyone, even strong swimmers. If you are going to be swimming in a pool, look for one with a regular lifeguard.
