文章大意:这是一篇议论文,文章主要论述成功具有上瘾的特性,依靠成功来获得快乐的人是不快乐的,并介绍了追求幸福而不是成功的方法,提醒我们不要过度追求成功。

4 . Imagine reading a story titled “The Constant Pursuit of Alcohol”. You would likely expect a depressing story about a person abusing alcohol. Now imagine reading a story titled “The Constant Pursuit of Success”. That would be an inspiring story, wouldn’t it?

Though it isn’t a conventional medical addiction, for many people, success has addictive properties. To a certain extent, praise stimulates the neurotransmitter dopamine (神经递质多巴胺) , which is shown in all addictive behaviors. Therefore, success is also similar to alcohol addiction in its effects on human.

“Unhappy is he who depends on success to be happy,” wrote Arex DiasRibeiro, a former Formula l race-car driver. “For such a person, the end of a successful career is the end of the line. His destiny (命运) is to die of bitterness or to search for more success in other careers and to go on living from success to success until he falls dead. In this case, there will not be life after success.”

There is plenty you can do to retrain yourself to pursue happiness instead of success. The first step is an admission that successful as you are, were, or hope to be in your life and work, you are not going to find true happiness in your professional life. You’ll find it in things that are deeply ordinary: enjoying a walk or a conversation with a loved one. The second step is to make up for any relationships you’ve compromised (妥协) in the name of success. The last step is to find the right measurement of success. If you measure yourself only by the rewards of money and power, you’ll spend your life running on these and comparing yourself to others. I suggest the better measurements be faith, family, and friendship.

Success in and of itself is not a bad thing. It can bring fun and sweetness to life. But it becomes tyrannical (专横的) when it is a replacement for the relationships and love that should be at the center of our lives.

1. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.Success is determined by many factors.
B.People can be greatly addictive to success.
C.Success can be really attractive to humans.
D.It’s difficult to achieve great success in life.
2. What can we learn from Alex Dias Ribeiro’s words in Paragraph 3?
A.It is not wise to end a successful career.
B.Happiness is more important than success.
C.Successful people usually live a boring life.
D.Success may not be the source of happiness.
3. What is the right measurement of success according to the author?
A.To take on a highly-paid job.B.To hold a high social position.
C.To focus on the true meaning of life.D.To find the right approach to success.
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To show us the importance of success.
B.To suggest love is at the center of our life.
C.To remind us not to overly pursue success.
D.To share his experience in finding happiness.

文章大意:文章为一篇说明文。文章指出适度的压力有益身心健康,但长期或过度的压力可能对身心健康有害,同时强调了积极态度、心理韧性培养的重要性。

5 . How many times have you heard that reducing stress is important for good health? But stress isn’t always the enemy. In fact, research suggests some is actually good for you, with possible benefits ranging from better brain function to healthier aging.

Firstly, it’s ubiquitous: Research suggests people feel at least some stress on 90% of their days. When stress worsens for a long time and can’t be solved, it can cause mental and physical health problems, even raising your risk for conditions like heart disease. But in most cases, a stress response (反应) is important. It can help you get through a hard time or even escape physical danger. And, when stress is managed well, it can lead to better health and happiness in the future.

Stress can be damaging — but proper amount of stress can be helpful, according to Assaf Oshri, a professor at the University of Georgia. Oshri says, “Resilience (适应力) comes from your interactions (相互作用) with the environment. If people don’t experience any stress, they may not build up resilience. If they experience too much, their happiness may suffer. But there seems to be a balance between the two, where stress improves mental health and helps people recover from difficult situations.”

When people face pressure, some approaches can also be taken to deal with it. Playing sports can help to find a balance in the face of stress, according to some experts. Turning to loved ones during tough times is important too. And if you can, remind yourself that stress is a difficult but necessary part of life.

“You can’t choose exactly what happens to you, but you can choose your response in the moment,” Jonathan Rush, a professor at the University of Victoria in Canada, says. “Having the idea that you can overcome things, you can grow from things; whatever happens, you will have a path forward — that’s what matters most.”

1. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Special.B.Interesting.C.Popular.D.Common.
2. What benefit does proper pressure bring to people according to Oshri?
A.It can help people know their physical danger.
B.It can promote people’s mental health.
C.It can help people keep a balance between life and work.
D.It can increase people's interactions with each other.
3. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The ways to deal with stress.B.The influence of sports on stress.
C.The approaches of having a happy life.D.The key to avoiding challenging times.
4. According to Rush, what is most important when facing stress?
A.Explaining what happened.B.Having a positive response.
C.Relying on your loved ones.D.Learning from others' experiences.

6 . As a teenager in the 1990s, Melissa Blake was interested in fashion. Unfortunately, fashion wasn’t much interested in her. Blake, who has a genetic bone and muscle disorder and stands a little under 4 feet tall, couldn’t find jeans or dresses in her size. Paging through magazines, she didn’t see a single person like her. “That would have been a game changer for me,” says Blake, who had 26 surgeries before age 17 to treat her Freeman-Sheldon syndrome.

So far, Blake, 39, has spent her adult life trying to make up for that. She is a disability-rights activist as well as a freelance (自由职业的) writer whose works have appeared in The New York Times and Clamour, but she gained a national following in 2019 after clapping back at people who made ugly comments about her online.

Blake posted a new selfie (自拍)every day. “Some selfies were serious, like the ones where I talked about disabilities or, how I was feeling on not-so-good days. Some were fun and silly, but each was a celebration, and each carried a message. However, some people said that I should be banned from posting photos of myself because I’m too ugly. I feel like every time I post a selfie or share something about my life as a disabled woman, it is a representation to fight that,” Blake told WBUR.

Her fans went wild, calling Blake a goddess and a powerful woman. Among her fans is Mindy Scheier, the founder and CEO of Runway of Dreams, which displays fashion for people with disabilities. Last fall, Scheier asked Blake to be one of the event’s 24 models because of her support of the welfare of the disabled.

“It was a little scary,” Blake says of modeling. But she’s glad she took the challenge. “When disabled people are included, it sends a message that we should get a seat at the table in all aspects of life.”

1. What can be inferred from the 1st paragraph?
A.Melissa Blake was a game designer.
B.Melissa Blake was interested in games.
C.Melissa Blake was too tall to find suitable clothes.

B.To gain a national following.
C.To become a model for Runway of Dreams.
D.To fight against ugly comments about her appearance.
3. Why was Melissa Blake asked to be a model for Runway of Dreams?
A.Because she is a fashion icon.B.Because she is the founder of the event.

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。主要论述了是什么是障碍以及障碍会给你带来的好处。接受障碍是有益的,这会让你不断改变和适应新的情况,从而让你成长为一个更好的自己。

7 . What is a barrier? It usually refers to an obstacle or a difficulty that prevents you from achieving something. Whether it was in your past, or you’ re presently facing one, you have to resolve it. While many people avoid barriers, deny their existence or let barriers control themselves, what stand you take on barriers will define the outcome of whether you rise from the challenge, or remain stuck in it. Here are some more great things to love about barriers.

First of all, barriers give you motivations. Sometimes barriers can reset your goals. You might be faced with setbacks or difficulties, you’ re forced to re-think, and re-examine your path. You may end up focusing on something new and exciting. Or, you may concentrate on something that you otherwise wouldn’t have if not for the particular setback. By having to overcome an obstacle, you’ll be fulfilling a purpose, rather than just going through the motions.

Also, barriers prepare you for the unexpected. They serve as guides for where to go next. Even though barriers can bring out many negative emotions in us, such as frustration, anger, or sadness, it’s important to realize that they don’t stop you from reaching your intended goals. Instead, they, in a way, give you time to stop and think if perhaps there is a new and better path to take and what you can prepare for what will happen along the way. Barriers shift your perspective.

Barriers, more often than not, are unavoidable. Life will never stop throwing you new barriers. So, the best thing to do is know how to better see and approach these obstacles, and transform them into opportunities for self-improvement. The more you’re able to see barriers as being an advantage to your life, the better you’ll be at managing them.

It will be rewarding to accept barriers, which will make you constantly change and adapt to new situations, thus allowing you to grow into a better version of yourself.

1. What is the determining factor of the outcome when facing barriers?
A.Your specific goals.B.Your own attitude.
C.Your diverse preparations.D.Your strong will power.
2. Which of the following is true about barriers?
A.They bring you positive emotions.
B.They prevent you from realizing your goals.
C.They are avoidable if you prepare for them well.
D.They enable you to view things in a different way.
3. What does the underlined word “approach” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.To cope with.B.To go over.
C.To come near to sb.D.To speak to sb about sth.
4. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Life is always throwing us barriers.B.Barriers are double-edged swords.
C.Embracing barriers benefits a lot.D.Meeting barriers is actually avoidable.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了五种缓解青少年压力的方法:运动、听音乐、倾诉、保证睡眠和保持健康饮食习惯。

8 . Life presents challenges at every stage, leading to inevitable stress. Developing coping abilities and maintaining a positive mindset can greatly benefit emotional, mental, and physical well-being.     1

Exercise and stretch.

When teenagers carry a lot of stress, it can create significant muscle tension within the body. Stretching and yoga, especially, will help to relieve this physical strain and provide a sense of release. Though, any type of exercise will do the trick, like jogging, stretching, weight training, etc.

Listen to music.

Sometimes a walk outdoors with a soothing playlist is the best remedy (治疗法) to stress.     2     Listening to music will facilitate positive thoughts, social skills, and a sense of peace when stressed. Essentially, chill songs with a gentle melody will help to slow down a racing mind and heartbeat.

Talk to someone.

Believe it or not, complaining can have a positive impact on mental health.     3     Teens can choose to talk to a close friend, teacher, or another family member. As long as they’re talking about what’s on their mind and what’s stressing them out, the chances are they will feel like a load is lifted off their shoulders afterward.

    4

Sleep and stress are directly related. When dealing with a particularly difficult situation, it can get in the way of a good night’s sleep. People who tend to internalize (内化) emotions may struggle to unwind, resulting in increased stress and sleeplessness. Learning to relax can manage stress at night.

Maintain healthy eating habits.

Stress or emotional eating is a behavior a teen may experience during times of increased stress. But it’s contributing to a greater harmful cycle.     5     Instead, kids should focus on enjoying food and eating because they’re hungry, not because they’re stressed or overwhelmed.

A.Luckily, teens love their music.
B.Get 8 hours of sleep every night.
C.It is natural for teens to listen to music.
D.Certainly, solutions are available to most of us in theory.
E.Parents aren’t the only people they can pour out their heart to.
F.Overeating to deal with feelings of stress can lead to guilt or shame afterward.
G.However, in a world that’s widely overwhelming, doing so is easier said than done.

If it’s confirmed by Guinness World Records, that would be a new world record. And she did it all with one leg and a prosthesis (假肢).

During that time she’s had a lot of time to think and has learned a few things about herself. “It’s taught me how strong one can be and how important absolute determination is.
