文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了寓言的形式在今天仍然具有价值。
1 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

For thousands of years, people have told fables (寓言)     1     (teach) a lesson or to pass on wisdom. Fables were part of the oral tradition of many early cultures, and the well-known Aesop’s fables date to the     2     (six) century, B. C. Yet, the form of the fable still has values today,     3     Rachel Carson says in “A Fable for Tomorrow.”

Carson uses a simple, direct style common to fable. In fact, her style and tone (口吻) are seemingly directed at children. “There was once a town in the heart of America,     4     all life seemed to enjoy peaceful existence with its surroundings,” her fable begins,     5     (borrow) some familiar words from many age-old fables. Behind the simple style, however, is a serious message     6     (intend) for everyone.

7     (difference) from traditional fables, Carson’s story ends with an accusation instead of a moral. She warns of the environmental dangers facing society, and she teaches that people must take responsibility     8     saving their environment.

The themes of traditional fables often deal with simple truths about everyday life. However, Carson’s theme is a more weighty     9     (warn) about environmental destruction. Carson proves that a simple literal form that has been passed down through the ages can still     10     (employ) today to draw attention to important truths.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了Flash fiction是一种虚构的短篇小说。如果你愿意自己写flash小说,这里有一些建议。

5 . Flash fiction is a fictional short story. If you are willing to write flash fiction on your own, here are some tips.

Select a genre(体裁)for your writing.

To begin with, decide your genre first.    1    Your genre can be science fiction, horror, thriller(惊险小说), or romance, depending on what you like and on readers’demand.

Choose an interesting name for your title.

A title is something that attracts readers.    2    Therefore, as a writer, you should know how to play with words and create unique titles. The title should hold the attention of a more significant number of people.

    3

With flash fiction, you don’t have time for lengthy explanations, character introductions, and setting descriptions. You need to go straight into what is happening in order to get everything you want in the story.

Be closely related.

When writing flash fiction, you should know what you’re writing about. Understand what your characters are feeling and experiencing. Pretend you’re a director and see each of your scenes slowly.

Focus on one moment at a time.

Describing one moment at a time. Don’t rush into a new character or scene.    4    This way, with the limited word count, you get to bring light to every aspect of flash fiction.

Use strong imagery.

Using strong imagery can help readers better form a picture in their minds. It’ll bring alive the scenes and the characters.    5    Good flash fiction has vivid(逼真的)imagery described in every part of the story

Create a surprise.

Ending the story with a surprise leaves readers thinking about the story. Your purpose for writing is halfway done when you leave readers guessing what else could have happened.

A.Jump into the action.
B.Explore the scenes fully.
C.Concentrate on a particular part of the story.
D.A wide variety of genres are quite popular these days.
E.It should increase curiosity and make more readers want to read.
F.Through the actions, readers can pull some ideas about the characters.
G.Therefore, having a picturesque description makes the writing feel realistic.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。作者推荐了一本关于反抗种族歧视的小说《杀死一只知更鸟》,介绍了小说的情节和作者,并分享了自己的阅读感受。
6 . Unforgettable Book Throws Light on Racism (种族歧视)

Today, I would like to recommend a book to you, which taught me an important lesson about prejudice and racism.     1     The story is set in Alabama in the southern US, where the author grew up.

The main character in this novel is a lawyer named Atticus Finch from the American South. The American South in the 1960s was known to be a place where many white people looked down upon black people, except for Finch. When the local judge asked him to defend a black man named Tom Robinson, who was wrongly accused of raping a white woman, Finch agreed.     2     Still, Finch fought to discover the truth, even though he was under threat. He proved that Robinson is innocent (清白的). As Finch’s son Jem and daughter Scout grew up, they started to see more racial prejudice around them.     3

The author Lee was born in Monroeville, Alabama in 1926. In her childhood, she, like Scout and Jem, learned about racial prejudice and the damage it could do. To Kill a Mockingbird was her first and only novel published.     4

For me, the most memorable quotes in the book are “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but… sing their hearts out for us.     5    ” The description of childhood innocence in the story through Scout and Jem is connected with the dark evils of prejudice in the town, which provides a dramatic contrast and enables you to understand how dangerous racism and prejudice are. I want to recommend this book because it contains slightly complex and interesting sentence structures. It is a book that you will never forget.

A.It took her seven years to complete.
B.Racism exists at all levels of society.
C.People worked for the rights of black people.
D.But many people tried to stop Finch from doing his job.
E.That’s why it is morally and totally wrong to kill a mockingbird.
F.To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel published in1960 by American author Harper Lee.
G.And they finally understood the importance of looking at the world with an unprejudiced mind.

8 . Science fiction, or sci-fi, with more themes related to environmental issues, overpopulation, and technological growth, has explosively (爆发地) grown in popularity since the beginning of the 21st century.     1

Some Chinese Sci-Fi History

2    Few works were translated. And the Western world had little to no taste for it.

The history of Chinese sci-fi is extensive, but the modern genre first took root during the 1900s. Authors such as Lu Xun promoted sci-fi’s early development in China and translated multiple Western stories like Jules Verne’s From the Earth to the Moon. Following the 1970s, China began its own golden age of science fiction. Movies, clubs, magazines, societies and communities formed around this genre and became increasingly popular among Chinese readers.     3

Its Entry into the West

Chinese sci-fi has become internationally recognized, mainly because of Ken Liu, who translated The Three-Body Problem, the first contemporary Chinese sci-fi novel to be translated into English.     4    Chinese sci-fi’s introduction into the West began with this novel, and it couldn’t have been given a better international debut (亮相). Liu has become a go-to source for Chinese authors seeking international audiences.

What Makes Chinese Sci-Fi Distinctive (独特的)

The subgenre is unique for using a number of cultural and traditional objects, words, places and beliefs.     5    The stories are also different because many modern Chinese sci-fi authors were heavily affected by the events of the 20th century. Their perspectives (思维方式) and ideas on morals, ethics ( 伦理), government, politics, science and anything in between come from standpoints previously unknown to Western readers.

A.Published in 2014, it proved to be a huge success.
B.He is a writer, translator and computer scientist.
C.Before the 2000s, Chinese sci-fi was lesser-known.
D.Chinese sci-fi also made its way to take the West by storm.
E.Similar to Western sci-fi, it has experienced the ups and downs.
F.This laid the foundation for its eventual introduction to Western readers.
G.This makes Chinese sci-fi a cultural and historical analysis of China.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章节选自小说《简爱》,是罗切斯特先生和简爱小姐的一些对话。

10 . For several days I (Jane Eyre) saw little of Mr Rochester. In the morning he seemed much occupied with business, and in the afternoon gentlemen from the neighbourhood called and sometimes stayed to dine with him. When his foot was well enough, he rode out a great deal.

During this time, all my knowledge of him was limited to occasional meetings about the house, when he would sometimes pass me coldly, and sometimes bow and smile. His changes of manner did not offend me, because I saw that I had nothing to do with the cause of them.

One evening, several days later, I was invited to talk to Mr Rochester after dinner. He was sitting in his armchair, and looked not quite so severe, and much less gloomy. There was a smile on his lips, and his eyes were bright, probably with wine. As I was looking at him, he suddenly turned, and asked me, “Do you think I’m handsome, Miss Eyre?”

The answer somehow slipped from my tongue before I realised it: “No, sir.”

“Ah, you really are unusual! You are a quiet, serious little person, but you can be almost rude.”

“Sir, I’m sorry. I should have said that beauty doesn’t matter, or something like that.”

“No, you shouldn’t! I see, you criticise my appearance, and then you stab (刺) me in the back! You have honesty and feeling. There are not many girls like you. But perhaps I go too fast. Perhaps you have awful faults to counterbalance (抵消) your few good points.”

I thought to myself that he might have too. He seemed to read my mind, and said quickly, “Yes, you’re right. I have plenty of faults. I went the wrong way when I was twenty-one, and have never found the right path again. I might have been very different. I might have been as good as you, and perhaps wiser. I am not a bad man, take my word for it, but I have done wrong. It wasn’t my character, but circumstances which were to blame. Why do I tell you all this? Because you’re the sort of person people tell their problems and secrets to, because you’re sympathetic and give them hope.”

It seemed he had quite a lot to talk to me. He didn’t seem to like to finish the talk quickly, as was the case for the first time.

“Don’t be afraid of me, Miss Eyre.” He continued. “You don’t relax or laugh very much, perhaps because of the effect Lowood School has had on you. But in time you will be more natural with me, and laugh, and speak freely. You’re like a bird in a cage. When you get out of the cage, you’ll fly very high. Good night.”

1. What’s not Miss Eyre’s impression of Mr Rochester in the beginning?
A.Busy.B.Sociable.
C.Friendly.D.Changeable.
2. From what Mr Rochester told Miss Eyre, we can conclude that he wanted to ________.

B.tell her his life experience
C.change her opinion of him
D.change his circumstances
