Poetry probably dates back tens of thousands of years ago, when writing had not been inventing. People would sit around the fire at night sang songs to entertain themselves, that reflected themes from the peoples daily lives. Since nothing was written down, over the years different versions of these songs developed and each area would have its own respectively rhythm. In an addition, people would recite stories of past hero. While in the beginning such songs and stories had very simple formats, over time it became more complicated and more polished. These were no longer the works of amateurs sitting around a fire, and works of true poets who cared about their art and sometimes makes a living from it.
4 . Like a Lily Among the Thoms by Karen S. Bell is a touching and appealing novel. Bell explores the theme of a sense of belonging through the perspective of her main character, Gabrielle Bernstein. Gabrielle is an optimistic young woman, and she never takes life for granted. She enjoys working as a librarian, and she loves her community. One day, she receives a notice to force her out of her apartment because her building is being pulled down, making room for luxury apartments. She only has a few days to find a new living situation. Soon after, she receives news:her long-lost father has passed away and left her an inheritance(遗产). Throughout this journey, Gabrielle struggles internally about whether to accept or decline this sudden inheritance from the man who has caused her so much pain.
From the start, Bell establishes a sharp contrast between- Gabrielle’s inner and outer self. For example,Gabrielle-has a generally positive outlook on life internally, and she never lets negative thoughts poison her mind. However, the author shows that when people come across Gabrielle, they see an external image of someone who seems angry, frustrated, and unhappy. In essence, Gabrielle is happy on the inside, but it does not reflect on her face. Later, the author explains this dichotomy(双面) when she finally pours out her childhood to her friend. In this revealing scene, Gabrielle’s face suddenly begins to change because she finally unburdens herself of how she truly feels about her upbringing. Indeed,"the more Gabrielle starts to let go of her painful past, the more her face comes across as pleasing.
Bell expertly describes the main character’s emotions with extreme honesty, and readers will undoubtedly be pleased with the results.

7 . As a student at a medical school, Sam thinks poetry is a big part of his life, thanks to his new teacher, Rafael Campo, who believes poetry can benefit every doctor’s education and work. Rafael is a physician, professor and a highly respected poet.
“Poetry is in every encounter with my patients. If we do anything when we’re with our patients, we’re really immersed in their stories, really hearing their voices. And, certainly, that’s what a poem does,” he said.
Rafael worries that something important has been lost in medicine and medical education today: humanity, which he finds in poetry. To end that, he leads a weekly reading and writing workshop for medical students and residents. He thinks medical training focuses too much on distancing the doctor from his or her patients, and poems can help close that gap.
Third-year resident Andrea Schwartz was one of the workshop regulars. She said, “I think there’s no other profession other than medicine that produces as many writers as it does. And I think that is because there’s just so much power in doctors and patients interacting when patients are at their saddest moments.” Not everyone believes that’s what doctors should do, though.
Rafael said, “I was afraid of how people might judge me, actually. In the medical profession, as many people know, we must always put the emergency first. But, you know, that kind of treatment, if it’s happening in the hospital, very regrettably, sadly, results in a bad outcome. The family is sitting by the bedside. The patient hasn’t survived the cancer. Don’t we still have a role as healers there?”
In a poem titled “Health”, Rafael writes of the wish to live forever in a world made painless by our incurable joy. He says he will continue teaching students, helping patients and writing poems, his own brand of medicine.

As I began to wade through thirteen pages of the credit-card company’s new policy, I wasn’t sure how it was going to affect me personally. As I waited to be connected to a customer service rep, I considered whether I should even write the fifth novel in my Old Cape House series. Did my readers really enjoy the mysterious historical stories I told? Should I take on more debt to buy my paperback books? I thought about all the author events, book signings, and book fairs that might be canceled because of the virus. When would normal life return?
“Hello, Ms. Struna, this is Thomas. May I have your account information?”
After repeating the information he needed, I explained my dilemma in trying to understand the new policy and asked how it would affect my future purchases.
“Please, do not worry. You will have no change.”
“Are you sure? I am an author and travel frequently. I need to have access to my card at all times for big or small purchases.” I laughed to myself, thinking I wasn’t going anywhere for a while, at least until there was a vaccine.
“Let me reassure you. There will be no change to your card, but Ms. Struna, may I ask you one more question? Are you the author of The Old Cape House?”
My jaw dropped. He was talking about my first novel of suspenseful historical fiction, The Old Cape House, published in 2013. I was stunned and I stammered, “Why, yes I am.” I was still skeptical about what he wanted from me.
Thomas kept talking. “I thought it was you. I recognized your name, and when you told me you were an author, I knew it was you.”
“Oh, my goodness.” My heart started to beat faster with delight at the connection I was making with an unknown foreign reader.
“Ms. Struna, your book changed me. It changed how I look at the world. It showed me ways to be more adventuresome and to be open to new things. Thank you so very much.”
