文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了诺贝尔文学奖获得者,加拿大女作家艾丽斯·芒罗的低调作风、写作风格、作品内容、所获荣誉等。

2 . It’s hard to find Alice Munro in the media. Even after she won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Canadian writer just appeared for a quick interview and then dropped out of sight. On Dec 29th, she still didn’t seek the spotlight when she was named one of the five Women of the Year by the Financial Times.

In Munro’s eyes, ordinary lives always hide larger dramas. So she records what we casually think of as the everyday actions of normal people. She often focuses on life in her hometown, a small village in Ontario which she is most familiar with. She writes about the ordinary things in the village —trees in the Ontario wilderness, poor country schools and long last illnesses. Above all, she talks about girls and women who have seemingly ordinary lives but struggle against daily misfortune.

She has a special talent for uncovering the extraordinary in the ordinary. These are ordinary people, ordinary stories, but she has the magic. Her precise language, depth of detail and the logic of her storytelling have made her stories inviting.

Runaway, one of Munro’s representative works, is a good example of her writing style. One of the stories centers on the life of an ordinary woman Carla, who lives in a small Canadian town with her husband Clark. The story slowly forms a picture of Carla, trapped in a bad marriage, her unhappiness building into desperation until she decides to flee. The story of Carla is a story of the power and betrayals of love. It is about lost children and lost chances that we can all find in life. There is pain beneath the surface, like a needle in the heart.

Since she published her first collection of short stories in 1968, Munro has won many awards, with the Nobel Prize being her biggest honor. On Oct 10th, 2013, the Nobel Prize committee named Munro the “master of the contemporary short story”.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,主要介绍的是James Harold Doolittle的生平和主要成就。

5 . He was a scientist, an airplane engineer and a general in the United States Army. At one time, he held the record for flying faster than any other person, the first pilot to cross the United States in less than 24 hours and the first pilot to fly “blind,” that is, using only instruments to guide his airplane. And when his country entered World War II, he led one of the first successful attacks against the enemy.

His name was James Harold Doolittle, who was born on December 14th, 1896, in the western state of California. His family soon moved to Nome, Alaska. James was a small boy and never grew to be very big. Yet larger boys made a mistake if they thought being small also meant being weak. James would fight if someone tried to hurt him. And he almost never lost.

As a young man James became a boxing champion and held the American West Coast championship for his weight. He continued to box when he entered the University of California to study mineral engineering. When the US entered World War I, young James joined the army and was trained as a pilot. After the war, he stayed in the army, thinking this would give him a chance to combine his flying skills with his interest in engineering.

For most of the years of the world wars, James was involved in the growth of the airplane industry. He helped test new airplanes, flew longer and longer distances and entered the world-famous air races of the time. In 1989, President Ronald Reagan conferred the Presidential Medal of Freedom on James. The award honored his work in aviation (飞机制造业) and his service to his country.

On September 27th, 1993, James died at the age of 96.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了Johan van Hulst在二战中勇救600多名犹太儿童的故事。

8 . We’re going to take a moment now to remember a man who lived a long life. Johan van Hulst was known for his great efforts during World War II, saving hundreds of Jewish children, but he was haunted (忧心忡忡的) by not being able to do more.

In 1940, the year Nazi Germany invaded (入侵) the Netherlands, Van Hulst headed a college in Amsterdam. The school he was running was next to a Jewish daycare center. When the Nazis took children from their parents, it was where the kids under the age of 12 went. When space ran out there, the Germans asked Johan van Hulst to house children in his school. He came up with an idea along with two people at the daycare center. If, for example, 20 children were transferred to his school, he’d only list 10 or 15, and the unregistered kids were then taken to safety More than 600 children were saved.

Israel’s Yad Vashem, The World Holocaust Remembrance Center, in 1973 recognized Van Hulst as a “Righteous Among the Nations”—a title for non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews from the Holocaust. In 2012, Israeli Prime Minister (总理) Benjamin Netanyahu honored Van Hulst during a state visit to the Netherlands. That year, Van Hulst’s heroism was adapted into a film titled “Sussman.”

Johan van Hulst died at the age of 107. Today, Amsterdam’s National Holocaust Museum stands at the site of the college. Emile Schrijver, who directs the museum, says Johan van Hulst always spoke of what he couldn’t do. “I was never a hero. I had to live the rest of my life with the knowledge that I’d only been able to save around 600 children rather than 700, 800, 900, or 1,000 children.”

Schrijver says Johan van Hulst’s long life allowed many generations to learn by his example —   that even under the worst conditions, there’s always an option to choose right over wrong.

A.He hid them in his school secretly.B.He set up a daycare center for them.
C.He helped them to find their parents.D.He managed to transport them to safety.

B.He had a deep love for his school.
C.He regretted not saving more children.
D.He called on the public to recognize other heroes.
4. What does Schrijver think of Van Hulst?
A.He needs more national attention.
B.He serves as an example to everyone.

While other teenagers might be busy taking care of their personal pages online or playing games for hours, 14-year-old Jackson Oswalt from Memphis has been busy doing something different. He has spent his free time building his own nuclear reactor (核反应堆) in his home. Now, the boy is praised by city leaders for his achievement as he is the youngest person to have achieved nuclear fusion (核聚变).

At just 12 years old, Jackson chose to spend his time exploring his interest in nuclear physics. After scouring the Internet, the student learned of the story of Taylor Wilson, an Arkansas boy who won recognition in the field of science as the youngest person to achieve nuclear fusion in 2008 at the age of 14. Jackson was greatly inspired by him.

The process of the nuclear experiment is not easy at all. But Jackson thought if Wilson could do it, then he could, too. Maybe he could even break Wilson’s record in the process. The boy started his project by turning his playroom into a laboratory. Then he bought different kinds of things to build own nuclear fusion reactor.

“The beginning of the scientific research was just learning about what other people had done with their fusion reactors,” Jackson said. His parents spent nearly $8,000 to $10,000 supporting his nuclear experiment. “With the money, I searched for and bought the parts that I needed. Often the parts I found were not exactly what I wanted, so I had to make improvements to them.”

Jackson’s hard work finally paid off. Hours before his 13th birthday, he made history as the youngest person to achieve nuclear fusion in January last year. Months after the project, Jackson continued to test his fusion reactor to further prove his project. On Tuesday, Memphis City leaders officially praised Jackson’s achievements with a resolution.
