文章大意:本文为一篇记叙文,讲述了艺术家Sarahi Zacatelco的经历和艺术启发来源。

9 . Inside the low lighting of Gather East Rock, the smell of coffee beans swirls (打旋) through the air. Art adorns (装点) the blue walls, but one painting stands out among the others. The painting’s name is “Mother Divine”, by the artist Sarahi Zacatelco. The mother in question is a green woman, with colorful plants adorning her head and water dripping (滴下) down her neck. In every brushstroke, Zacatelco pays homage to the man who taught her how to paint: her grandfather Agustin.

Born in 1982, Zacatelco learned how to create art from her grandfather in Oaxaca. At the time, her grandfather lived with her while her mother worked. Together, the two spent hours going out to the central plaza in Juchitán, where she let her senses take over. “You can see the food, you can smell it, you can see the lady selling flowers, and you can see everything,” she recalled excitedly. When she was six years old, her grandfather gave her a piece of paper and watercolors and showed her how to put the colors on it. She hasn’t stopped making art since.

Zacatelco’s grandparents made chess pieces out of rocks and wood to sell. They also made Talavera pottery (陶器) pieces, which Zacatelco described as “a Baroque tradition” that one might see in old colonial (殖民地的) homes. She no longer has any of her grandparent’s Talavera —“the tradition was lost due to being poorly paid and a lot of effort going into each piece.”

In the 1990s, Zacatelco’s mother decided to move her family to give them a better life. She moved her children to Mexico City, then to the Bronx, and then to the Brownsville neighborhood in Eastern Brooklyn. The family moved to Fair Haven, where Zacatelco still lives, in 2001. She called it the perfect place to raise two boys and two girls. Her family did not keep any of her grandfather’s old art before he died. But his artistic spirit did not die with him. Zacatelco carries on his legacy today with her art.

1. How is paragraph 1 developed?
A.By testing an assumption.B.By giving a description.
C.By making a comparison.D.By analyzing a phenomenon.
2. How did Agustin inspire Zacatelco’s artistic spirit at first?
A.He instructed her in watercolor painting.
B.He introduced sensory experiences to her.
C.He taught her to make chess pieces out of rocks.
D.He asked her to observe his creation of pottery pieces.
3. Why did Zacatelco’s mother move her family?
A.She wanted them to live a better life.
B.She needed to change jobs frequently.
C.She found their house was too small for them.
D.She wanted to relieve the pain of losing a loved one.
4. What would be the best title for this text?
A.Art: comfort for imperfect lives
B.Baroque tradition: a dying art form
C.An artist’s first teacher: her grandfather
D.An artist’s moving experiences: sources of inspiration

10 . In 1959, Handler changed how toy dolls were made when she introduced “Barbie” to the world. With her mature figure, Barbie was one of the first “grown-up” dolls to hit the retail market.

Handler wanted to create a toy that was different from the baby dolls that occupied little girls’ toy boxes. She wanted a doll that girls could show their future dreams upon and allowed for limitless outfit (全套服装) and career choices. Inspired by paper dolls of the time, Handler, to much disagreement, made sure Barbie had the body of a grown woman.

“My own idea of Barbie,” Handler wrote in her autobiography, “was that through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be. Barbie always represented the fact that a woman had choices.”

There’s even a Barbie for cancer patients — Brave Barbie — a partnership between Mattel and CureSearch that sends a bald (光头的) Barbie to families affected by cancer. “Gifting my daughter a Barbie who suffered from cancer was wonderful,” Michelle, a cancer survivor said, “We would play with that Barbie together and I’d heartbreakingly watch her pretend to take the doll to the hospital for chemo (化疗), or place its long wig (假发) on top of its head and tell the doll that it’s time to be beautiful again.”

Bald Barbie was super brave and went on awesome adventures after chemo. Sometimes she felt sick and needed to sleep, but would feel much better after a rest. Bald Barbie always beat the cancer and went on to live a long and happy life with her family. That Barbie became so much more than a plastic doll — she was a means of communication and a coping mechanism (应对机制) during an extremely unhappy time for little families.

1. Why did Handler create Barbie?
A.To make a hit in the women’s retail market.
B.To appeal to boys with her various clothing.
C.To inspire girls to make choices as they wish.
D.To do a research on women’s career choices.
2. How might Michelle feel when watching her daughter with Brave Barbie?
A.Interested yet proud.B.Sad yet comforted.
C.Delighted and ashamed.D.Heartbroken and regretful.
3. What does Brave Barbie mean to Michelle’s family?
A.A reliable emotional support.B.A glue for broken relationships.
C.An effective practical treatment.D.A secret medium of argument.
4. Which newspaper section is the text probably taken from?
A.Medicine.B.Sports.C.Story.D.Environment.
