文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述的是随着医学科学的迅速发展,克隆技术越来越成熟,但也成为人们争论的焦点。

With rapid advances in medical science, cloning is slowly but surely looking like it could be in our near future. However, is it really an option that should be considered as a way to extend human life?

Reproductive cloning may help human families gain children, but there’s also a benefit for the animal world. It brings hope to people eager for children but unable to have their own or adopt. It can also bring about the recreation of species that have long since died, allowing scientists to fully study the species as a living creature instead of simply looking at images or bones.

Many believe that cloning can be used to replace failing organs. This will reduce the waiting list for organ donations and allow more people to be saved. Not only that, but because the organ is, in fact, your own organ, there would be less chance of rejection.

Cloning could prove helpful in genetic research. Using cloning technologies, genetic researchers would have a better understanding of the composition of genes and the effects of genetic constituents (成分) on human characters. There’s also the possibility of changing genetic constituents in cloned humans, and cloning could help fight genetic diseases.

While the cloning of body organs can help extend human life, it could also cause a lot of malpractice (玩忽职守). Along with the ability to clone desired characters, there could be the possibility of people deliberately reproducing undesired characters. This could lead to a rise in malpractices within society.

Cloning involves a process of creating identical genes. As such, there would be a lack of diversity in humankind. Scientists believe this lack of diversity will lower the human race's ability to adapt.

Whatever your view on cloning may be, studies show that the clone would in fact not be completely identical to the original just as twins are not completely identical. Though they might look alike, twins have different personalities and enjoy different things. The same could be said of clones. Even if technology were created in which your memories and thoughts could be transmitted (传送) to the clone, your clone would still be a different person.

5. What good might reproductive cloning bring?
A.It may help improve human well-being.
B.It could contribute to the rising birthrate.
C.It could help animals survive deadly diseases.
D.It may enable scientists to better study extinct species.
6. According to the text, cloning can also be used for       .
A.organ transplant
B.solving the aging problem
C.infectious disease treatment
D.constructing a gene database
7. What’s one problem cloning may cause?
A.Great diversity.
B.Individual security risk.
C.Increased improper conduct.
D.Serious personality disorder.
8. Why are twins mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.To stress twins’ similarities.
B.To show twins are quite common.
C.To carry out deeper research on twins.
D.To better illustrate what a clone will be like.

Can modern life make you sick? Have you ever experienced the following surprising syndromes?

Margaret’s friend is taking a new job in a faraway city. She wants to hold a farewell dinner party at her home. But she can’t. Margaret suffers from CHAOS (Can’t Have Anyone Over Syndrome). Her apartment is always messy and she's embarrassed by it. “My best friend gave me some good advice. He told me to get a maid,” she says.

These days we get and receive so much information every day. People call, text, and email us all day long and they expect quick responses from us. It can be very demanding — and it's making some people sick. They have information fatigue syndrome. There is so much information that they become paralyzed and can't think clearly. “I can't sleep at night because I worry,” says Bahman, a college senior. “It’s terrible.”

Do you sometimes engage in “deskfast” (eating breakfast at your desk at work)? If your answer is “yes”, then you may suffer from hurry sickness. Hurry sickness is a straightforward name for another syndrome of modern life. “I'm always rushing. I get headaches a lot. Taking aspirin seems to help,” says Mari, a company employee.

We've all complained about having too much work to do. Well, how about not having enough work? Underload syndrome is caused by having little or nothing to do at the office. You have to pretend that you're working. Steven works as a project manager. “I can finish my work in about four hours, but I'm afraid to say anything about it. I don't want to be assigned too much work!”

If you were these people, how would you reduce your sufferings?

9. What can we learn about Margaret?
A.She is not a tidy person.B.She is going to take a new job.
C.She is good at throwing a party.D.She is unwilling to accept others' advice.
10. What do Bahman and Mari have in common?
A.Both are full of energy.B.Both like working greatly.
C.Both are under great stress.D.Both always seem to be rushing.
11. What's wrong with Steven?
A.He is not well qualified for his job.B.He tries to stay away from pressure.
C.He is too busy to have his own life.D.He lacks confidence when working.

Going for walks with my two-year-old son, I meet many nice people who ask what my job is. When I say that I teach at Swarthmore College, their faces light up, and the next question is, “What do you teach?” As they hear my answer “linguistics (the scientific study of language)”, they look confused. The smile on their faces tells me that they don't know what to make of my answer. If they are brave enough, they will ask, “So, what kinds of classes do you teach then?” Good question.

I have long been teaching pragmatics(语用学), a branch of linguistics. It is primarily concerned with how the context(上下文) in which a sentence is said influences its meaning. What “I'd love a glass of water” means largely depends on where and when it is said. In a restaurant, it will probably be understood as a request directed toward the waiter. Somewhere out in a desert, however, the same sentence is more likely to be interpreted as an impossible wish. Thus, although the literal (照字面本义的) meanings of two sentences could be exactly the same, their communicative meanings could be very different.

Interestingly, in pragmatics you will discover a message can be well communicated though not literally expressed. This takes place when the speaker and the listener share common ground.

If you see a car stopped on the side of the road, and you have the following exchange with the driver, you both know you've said enough to get your points across:

Driver: Hi. I ran out of gas.

You: There’s a Shell just down the road.

Obviously, the driver is really asking something like, “Could you tell me what to do?” Your reply implies that there is a place nearby where the driver can get gas. No further explanation is needed because Shell, the name of a gas station, is part of their common ground.

12. What do we know about the people in Paragraph 1?
A.They are familiar with the author.B.They work at Swarthmore College.
C.They know little about linguistics.D.They hope to attend the author's class.
13. Why does the author say the underlined sentence has different communicative meanings?
A.Because their speakers are different.B.Because their literal meanings are different.
C.Because their wishes are different.D.Because their contexts are different.
14. Why did the car mentioned in the text stop?
A.To buy some gas.B.To ask for help.C.To wait for someone.D.To take a short rest.
15. How does the author mainly explain pragmatics?
A.By analyzing major causes.B.By making comparisons.
C.By using examples.D.By presenting research findings.
