Jerilee Melo has been teaching preschool for four years. When COVID-19 shut down her school, she began to wonder what her next Career move would be.

After several months, Melo decided to take a risk. She found a bus on Facebook Marketplace and purchased it in hopes of setting up her own teaching space.

Melo renovated (翻新) the bus and in August began teaching her first preschoolers, many of them her students in previous classrooms. To keep safe, Melo spread her class so that there were never more than five children on the bus with masks on.

Melo doesn’t move the bus during lessons, but parks it at a certain location and allows it to serve as a mobile classroom that utilizes the surroundings.

While her bus was renovated for teaching, Melo hadn’t been able to decorate it. In November she decided to enter a contest with Brittany Jeltema, a former teacher who now hosts giveaways for classroom makeovers (重新布置). Much to Melo’s surprise, Jeltema reached out telling her that she won.

“Jeri’s application stood out, because it was such an innovative approach to education,” Jeltema said.“Jeri submitted pictures of her bus before the makeover, and my brain lit up with ideas. I knew I could help create an engaging environment for her students.”

Over the course of a weekend, Jeltema and her team flew to Valencia, California, and transformed Melo’s mobile classroom into a 70’s style bus.

With her bus, Melo hopes to inspire other teachers to get creative during these unprecedented times.

“A lot of teachers are scared right now, because they feel they need to be in a classroom to educate. And they don’t,” Melo said. “I think teachers need to expand and go beyond the classroom, because what they have is valuable.”

4. Why did Melo buy a bus?
A.To test a risky business.B.To build a market.
C.To expand her living space.D.To continue her career.
5. How did Melo protect students and herself from COVID-19?
A.By driving the bus along.B.By reducing learning duration.
C.By reducing the class size.D.By teaching in remote surroundings.
6. How did Brittany Jeltema feel about Melo’s application?
A.Scared.B.Impressed.C.Surprised.D.Curious.
7. According to Melo, in what way can teachers stop feeling scared?
A.By following their dreams.B.By beautifying classrooms.
C.By thinking outside the box.D.By concentrating on students.

Summer is when my exercise group leads runs and exercises of varying distance and difficulty each Saturday morning throughout July. The challenges are doable, but far from easy.

It’s the distance-running that I least enjoy. They give me time to think, though. Here’s what occurred to me one Saturday: “Don’t give in to peer pressure” —that adage (格言) I grew up believing-is wrong, or at least incomplete. The lesson should be: If bad peers are applying unfavorable pressure, find better peers.

This struck me as 1 saw Jed, a larger man than I, fly past me on an exhausting uphill run. How ridiculous to have thought that small guys like me couldn’t run swiftly!

I reconsidered peer pressure as 1 watched Bob turn in perfect repetitions. Bob’s background is in accounting, but that’s not why we call him “The Auditor”. There’s never any rounding up on his exereise count; no cutting corners on his form. UCLA basketball coaching legend John wooden said the true test of a man’s character is what he does when no one is watching. It reveals Bobs good character and my room for improvement.

Most of all, I rethought the adage when I saw Ryan form a partnership with a slower runner, whom he encouraged to finish his race. Doing this took precious ticks off Ryan’s own time and risked disqualification.

St. Francis de Sales put this sentiment (看法) best: “Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing so gentle as real strength." This is the true strength we are measuring, for this is the strength that mattes.

Don’t give in to peer pressure from bad peers. From the good ones, give in every day of the week, and twice on Sundays.

8. What used to be the author’s attitude towards peer pressure?
A.Favorable.B.Tolerant.C.Unclear.D.Disapproving
9. What can we know about Bob?
A.He is an excellent partner.B.He is consistent in his behavior.
C.He is always the fastest runner.D.He is comparable to John Wooden.
10. Why does the author mention St. Francis de Sales in the 6th paragraph?
A.To explain a rule.B.To present a fact.C.To summarize a point.D.To make a prediction.
11. What is the main idea of the text?
A.Peer pressure can be good.B.Adages shape our views.
C.Life lessons matter the most.D.Challenges build up strength.

By mimicking (模仿) the properties (特性) of spider silk, one of the strongest materials in nature, researchers from the University of Cambridge have created a plant-based, sustainable material which promises to replace plastic in many common household products.

Created by using a new approach for assembling plant proteins into materials which mimic silk on a molecular (分子的) level, the new material is as strong as many common plastics in use today. The energy-efficient method, which uses sustainable ingredients, results in a plastic-like film. Non-fading “structural” color can be added to the film, and it can also be used to make water-resistant coatings.

For years, Professor Tuomas Knowles from Cambridge has been researching the behavior of proteins. Much of his research has been focused on what happens when proteins misfold or “misbehave”, and how this relates to health and human disease, primarily Alzheimer’s disease. As part of the research, Knowles and his team became interested in why materials like spider silk are so strong when they have such weak molecular bonds (键). Having found that one of the key features that gives spider silk its strength is that the hydrogen bonds are arranged regularly in space and at a very high density, the researchers successfully replicated (复制) the structures found on spider silk by using soy protein isolate (SPI), a protein with a completely different composition.

“Other researchers have been working directly with silk materials as a plastic replacement, but they’re still an animal product. In a way we’ve come up with ‘vegan spider silk’— we’ve created the same material without the spider.”

“This is the culmination of something we’ve been working on for years, which is understanding how nature generates materials from proteins,” said Knowles. “We didn’t set out to solve a sustainability challenge — we were motivated by curiosity as to how to create strong materials from weak interactions.”

12. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.How the new material was created.B.What makes the ideal ingredients.
C.Who are in charge of the research.D.Why health and disease are connected.
13. Which of the following might Knowles agree with?
A.Life is full of surprises.B.Ideals light our way forward.
C.Failure is the mother of success.D.We must believe in ourselves.
14. How is the new film different from other silk materials?
A.It’s strong.B.It’s efficient.C.It’s sustainable.D.It’s replaceable.
15. Which of the following is the underlined word “culmination” closest in meaning to?
A.Fruit.B.Demand.C.Complexity.D.Change.
