Saturday finally came. And I was looking at my watch very often.

As the sun began to set, Henry had two visitors, Tom and Joe. They were two miners and were Henry's friends. They carried guitars and brought flowers and a bottle of whiskey. They put the flowers in vases and began to play some fast and lively songs.

That night, they kept giving Henry glasses of whiskey, which they made him drink. When I reached for one of the two glasses left on the table, Tom stopped my arm. "Drop that glass and take the other one!" he whispered. He gave the remaining glass of whiskey to Henry just as the clock began to strike midnight.

Henry emptied the glass. His face grew whiter and whiter. "Boys," he said, "I am feeling sick. I want to lie down."

Henry was asleep almost before the words were out of his mouth.

In a moment, his two friends had picked him up and carried him into the bedroom. They fastened the door and came back. They seemed to be getting ready to leave. So I said, "Please don't go gentlemen. She is coming back and will not know me. I am a stranger to her."

They looked at each other. "Henry's wife has been dead for nineteen years," Tom said.

"Dead?" I whispered.

"Dead or worse," he said.

"She went to see her parents about six months after she got married. On her way back, on a Saturday evening in June, when she was almost here, the Indians captured her. No one ever saw her again. Henry lost his mind. He thinks she is still alive. When June comes, he thinks she has gone on her trip to see her parents. Then he begins to wait for her to come back."

"On the Saturday night she is supposed to come home, we come here to be with him. We put a sleeping drug in his drink so he will sleep through the night. Then he is all right for another year."

Joe picked up his hat and his guitar. "We have done this every June for nineteen years," he said. He opened the door of the pretty little house and then they disappeared into the darkness.

California has become the first U.S. state to approve plans to require newly built homes to include solar equipment.

The state’s Energy Commission voted 5-0 to approve the new rules, which are to take effect in 2020. The rules will cover most newly built residential buildings up to three stories high. The move is California’s latest step aimed at reaching renewable energy targets and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

California has set a goal of filling half of its electricity needs with renewable energy by 2030. Officials said they had reached 30 percent by the end of 2017. The state’s Governor, Jerry Brown, plans to hold an international climate meeting in September.

The Energy Commission said the cost of adding solar equipment to a single-family home would be about $9,500. But, the group added that homeowners would save at least $19,000 in energy costs over 30 years.

The rules were approved after getting widespread support from builders, utility companies and solar equipment manufacturers. Robert Raymer is the technical director for the California Building Industry Association. He says the action marks a step forward for the wider use of solar power in the U.S. “You can bet every other of the 49 states will be watching closely to see what happens,” he told the Associated Press. Solar companies praised the new requirements, which officials have said will likely raise demand for solar equipment in California by 10-15 percent. Tom Werner is head of California-based solar company SunPower. He told Reuters the decision was another example of California environmental policy becoming a model for other states to follow. The Solar Energy Industries Association called it a “historic decision for the state and the U.S.” It estimated the action would produce “huge economic and environmental benefits,” including bringing tens of billions of dollars into California.

California is already the nation’s number one market for solar equipment sales. At least 5 million homes in the state are estimated to currently use solar power.

5. What is the purpose of the move?
A.To equip buildings with modern conveniences.
B.To advocate an environmentally-friendly style.
C.To promote the purchase of solar equipment.
D.To meet people’s increasing needs for energy.
6. The individuals and associations referred to in paragraph 5 ________.
A.all made favorable comments on the new rules to take effect in 2020
B.all firmly believed such an example would be followed across America
C.doubted whether the new rules would be a win-win policy to them all
D.thought the approval marked the beginning of the use of solar energy
7. What is the best title for the passage?
A.Approval from all walks of life of new rules
B.The Wide Use of Solar Energy in California
C.Policy to Encourage the Use of Solar Equipment
D.California to Require Solar Power for New Homes

Today, some 815 million people suffer chronically(长期地) from hunger. And although this is significantly fewer people than the numbers we saw a decade ago, hunger still kills more people than AIDS, Tuberculosis(肺结核) and Malaria(疟疾) combined.

On May 28th, we observe World Hunger Day. It is an effort to focus attention on the fact that despite an adequate availability of food nearly everywhere, globally, some 21,000 people die every day from hunger or malnutrition(营养不良).

People do not go hungry because the world does not produce enough food for everyone. According to the world Hunger Education Service, over the past three decades, significant growth in food production, along with improved access to food, helped reduce the percentage of chronically undernourished(营养不良的) people in developing countries from 34 percent to 15 percent. The principal problem is that many people in the world still do not have resources to purchase or grow enough food.

Indeed, hunger is a consequence of poverty, and also one of its causes. Hunger exists because many countries lack social safety nets; because in many countries women, although they do most of the farming, do not have as much access as men to training, credit or land.

Conflict, governance systems that do not encourage investment in agriculture, poor management of land and natural resources, lack of educational opportunity, displacement of small farmers by natural disasters, and financial and economic difficulties that remove jobs at the lowest levels, all contribute toward creating conditions that push the poorest into hunger.

Over the past decade, a global push to reduce hunger and extreme poverty has marked some significant successes, thanks in part to the efforts of numerous international and transnational institutions, foundations, NGOs and governments, including the United States.

But on world Hunger Day, let us not forget that with over 815,000 people still living in daily food insecurity, we still have a long way to go before we can safely say that no child goes to bed hungry most nights and that no parent skimps on(节省) their own dinner so the children can eat.

8. The three deadly diseases are mentioned in the text to stress ________.
A.hunger is as critical a problem as they are
B.disease is still the leading cause of death
C.hunger remains to be a rather serious problem
D.disease goes hand in hand with starvation
9. Paragraph 3, 4 and 5 are intended to tell us ________.
A.poor management in agricultureB.reasons for low food production
C.consequences caused by hungerD.various contributors to hunger
10. What is the author's attitude to the world starvation issue?
A.Pessimistic.B.Reserved.C.Concerned.D.Ambiguous.

Ways to Protect Yourself from Hackers Online

An increase in cyber-attacks(网络攻击) and identity theft make the Internet seem like a scary place these days. This raises a question: How can individuals protect or make it more difficult for hackers to access their information?     11

Make your password harder to hack

Hard passwords include upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters.     12     They should also not spell out words easy for hackers to find, like your pet’s name or the name of a family member.

    13

A very common mistake made by users is to create one hard password, but then never change it. Remembering a long list of complicated passwords can be difficult. But no password is unbreakable. Hackers are better able hack multiple accounts if those accounts all have the same password. A password management service, like Dashlane or Password Box, can help you keep track of hard passwords. These services permit users to easily store and secure their passwords.

Clear your browser history

This goes for all the devices you use in a day – your home computer, your work computer, or your friend’s iPad. Internet browsers like Firefox or Chrome keep track of where you’ve been and what you’ve done online.     14     Information about what you sent from or saved on your computer can be kept for days or weeks. It is very easy for anyone who sees that information to steal a detailed record of your online activities.

Do not use free Wi-Fi

15     Often, a user does not need a password to connect to these wireless networks. These services might be useful, but they’re also an easy way for hackers to access everything on your device. Unless you really need it, it is best not to use it.

A.Change your password regularly
B.They keep records of every site you visited.
C.They should be at least eight characters in length.
D.For many people, not using a public computer can be difficult.
E.They can also spread viruses easily across computers and networks.
F.Here are some tips that can help you protect against cyber-attacks.
G.An increasing number of public places now offer free wireless access to the Internet.
