As I started to be recognized as a promising student, around eighth grade, I was told by someone,“You're smart and you're from the hood. Colleges will love you.”Why did he say that? I always looked at being from the hood as a bad thing.

In my life, I've had a lot of unfortunate experiences. So when it came time for me to write my personal statement for college applications, I knew that I could sell a story about all the struggles I had overcome. Each draft (草稿) I wrote had a different topic. The first was about growing up without my dad being involved, the second was about the many times my life was threatened, and the third was about dealing with anxiety. Every time I wrote, and then gave up and then redrafted, I didn't feel good. It felt as if I were trying to gain pity.

Conflicted, I spoke to my teacher Nathaniel Sinckler. When he was applying to Morehouse College, he“felt pressured to write about something he could oversell.”“I knew enough to write about hardships I had faced,”he said, “but although I didn't have enough, I didn't go without.”This made him feel that he was at a disadvantage because he was competing with kids on the same academic level who had faced even more hardships. He explained that the focus becomes no longer who you are as a person but rather if you've been challenged enough. Mr. Sinckler asked me to question what actually makes up my identity, because while struggles are important, they're not the only contributions to it.

Pain is one of life's teachers. We are molded (塑造) by it, and some will choose to write about it urgently and passionately. Yet I would encourage those who feel like their stories were written in tragedy (悲剧) to rethink that, as I did. When you open your mind to all the other things you've offered in life, it becomes liberating (令人感到解脱的). Let's show college admissions officers what they're missing out on, not what they already know.

4. What did the author think of the comment about him in paragraph 1?
A.Amusing.B.Convincing.
C.Encouraging.D.Confusing.
5. What problem did the author experience while writing his personal statement for college applications?
A.He couldn't find his first draft.
B.He was constantly interrupted by his dad.
C.He couldn't explain his pain satisfactorily.
D.He had to balance different aspects of his life.
6. What did Nathaniel Sinckler ask the author to do?
A.Take pity on other kids.
B.Present his all-round identity.
C.Go without mentioning challenges.
D.Improve his academic performance.
7. What is the author's purpose in writing this text?
A.To ask for advice.
B.To make a suggestion.
C.To show appreciation.
D.To make an assumption

Approaching 96, at an age when most are lonely and in poor health, Olga Murray, full of energy, has been eagerly planning a trip to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, while keeping in touch with hundreds of friends around the world. How can she be in such good shape? You may wonder. Is it her good genes? (Her mother lived to 98.) Her daily salads and three-times-a-week workouts? Or might it have something to do with the retired lawyer's second career as founder of a nonprofit organization?

Scientists increasingly are finding that the answer — call it living with purpose, finding meaning in life or just engaging with something larger than yourself — can be a particularly healthy pursuit. Living with a sense of purpose can improve the quality of those final years. Murray offers a vivid example of how to create a sense of meaning.

Murray's story began in 1984, after she had worked 37 years as a lawyer and was starting to think about retirement (退休). At 59, while traveling in Nepal, Murray found herself amazed by the children there.“They were poor beyond anything I had ever experienced,”she recalled in a self-published memoir (自传) years later.“Yet they were the most joyful little kids anywhere on earth.”She wanted to devote the rest of her life to helping educate Nepalese children.

Returning to Nepal the next year, she met Allan Aistrope, then a volunteer English teacher at the country's only orphanage (孤儿院). The two combined forces, beginning with organizing college scholarships for four of the orphans. After another five years, they had launched the Nepal Youth Foundation (NYF), which by then was supporting several hundred scholarship students and raising 60 homeless children. In 1994, the two hired Som Paneru, a former scholarship student, as executive director. Murray has taken several steps to make sure the NYF will survive after the unavoidable loss of her presence. She ceded (转让) the presidency to Paneru in 2012. Now, she is busy as usual, leading lots of fundraising campaigns (筹款活动).

8. What might be the reason for Murray's long life according to the scientists?
A.Her good genes.
B.Her daily workouts.
C.Her changing career.
D.Her living with purpose.
9. How did Nepalese children impress Murray when she traveled in Nepal at 59?
A.They were eager to receive education.
B.They lived a very poor but happy life.
C.They liked to converse with foreigners.
D.They were terribly interested in her memoir.
10. What did Murray do first when she traveled to Nepal the second time?
A.She helped four orphans go to college.
B.She started the Nepal Youth Foundation.
C.She volunteered to act as an English teacher.
D.She sent 60 homeless children to the orphanage.
11. What is Murray focusing on at present?
A.Recovering the losses she has experienced.
B.Devoting herself to fundraising activities.
C.Picking the right person to replace Paneru.
D.Helping more people plan their retirement.

The small powerhouses, known as fuel cells (燃料电池), have been getting much attention recently in the United Kingdom. Built with reactive material sandwiched between an anode (正极) and cathode (负极), fuel cells could reduce our dependency on batteries, therefore reducing the quantity of harmful waste produced by batteries thrown away. It's possible, with a lot more development, to power vehicles using these cells too. In addition, most up-to-date fuel creates power using hydrogen and oxygen, leaving water as its only emission (排放物).

Though worldwide, many experts have declared that fuel cell technology requires too much money to make it commercially practical, some firms in the UK are taking the matter into their own hands and raising money for development and research. Intelligent Energy, a cell developer located in Loughborough, England, raised $13.6 million in 2008 to further cell technology. So far, it has raised $130 million in an effort to bring the renewable energy of cells to the commercial stage.

Another UK-based body marketing a low carbon atmosphere through cell usage may be the Carbon Trust. This non-profit trust's goal is to work with and support companies and people in their efforts to lessen carbon pollutants. Based on their research, the UK has great potential to develop fuel cell technology at an affordable rate, bringing commercialization of the alternative energy much closer.

While these initiatives show that fuel usage within the UK continues to have plenty of room for development, it shouldn't be assumed the alternative energy source isn't already in place. Actually, more than 14,000 cells have been sold internationally in the transportation market, powering specialized vehicles, such as lift trucks. With an already strong foundation and a huge amount of money being put into the technology, the UK is becoming a leader in fuel cell and alternative energy technology.

12. What makes fuel cells mentioned in the text different from traditional batteries?
A.They are smaller.B.They are cleaner.
C.They have a longer life.D.They can be used more widely.
13. What do many experts say about fuel cell technology?
A.It will soon be marketed.
B.It will not be accepted worldwide.
C.It is not efficient in power generation.
D.It is expensive to make it commercial.
14. Why is Intelligent Energy mentioned?
A.To show it is a pioneer in fuel cell technology.
B.To show it has many branches around the world.
C.To explain it has made a big profit on fuel cells.
D.To explain it aims to produce first-class fuel cell vehicles.
15. What is the author's attitude towards the future of fuel usage within the UK?
A.Worried.B.Carefree.
C.Doubtful.D.Positive.
