Lise Meitner was born in Vienna, Austria on November 7, 1878.She was the third child of eight children in the family. Her father Philipp, who was a lawyer, hired personal teachers to teach the children, and she learned mathematics very well. Music was important to the family, and all the children learned to play the piano. The Meitner children were taught to listen to their parents, but to think for themselves.
When Lise Meitner finished school at the age of 14, she could not go to college for higher education, as were all girls in Austria. But, inspired by the discovery of Henri Becquerel, she was determined to study radioactivity(放射性).
When she turned 21, women were finally allowed into Austrian universities. Meitner was admitted into the University of Vienna; there she was excellent at math and physics and earned her doctor’s degree in 1906.She wrote to Marie Curie, but there was no room for her in the Paris lab, so Meitner made her way to Berlin. There she worked with Otto Hahn, but as an Austrian Jewish woman, she was excluded from the main labs and allowed to work only in the basement.
In 1912, the pair moved to a new university and Meitner had better lab equipment. Though Meitner was forced to escape Nazi Germany in 1938, they continued to cowork. Meitner continued her work in Sweden and later they found the phenomenon “nuclear fission(核裂变)”. The discovery, which finally led to the atomic bomb, won Hahn the Nobel Prize in 1944. Meitner, ignored by the Nobel committee(委员会), refused to return to Germany after the war and continued her atomic research in Stockholm into her80s.

Susan Murabana’s travelling telescope began with a simple revelation(被暴露的真相):We all have access to the sky. We all see the same moon. At the same time, she knew that access wasn't created equal. Telescopes have been around for 400 years, but most children in Kenya had never looked through one. She thought she could change that.
In 2014, she and her partner Mr. Owen bought a telescope and started showing kids around Kenya what the stars looked like up close. Today, their Travelling Telescope program has reached 200,000 kids. It teaches kids about space and rockets online, offering workshops on 3D modeling and astronomy to local schoolchildren. “It's never been about these kids becoming astronomers,” Mrs. Murabana says. “I believe astronomy is an opportunity for kids to spread interest in other fields of science such as engineering and math, and that it is only through science that we can understand the world we live in.”
Growing up in Nairobi, Mrs.Murabana never saw astronomy as a possible career path-or even a potential hobby. “I always loved math and science, but I wasn't exposed to astronomy,” she says. She studied economics in college, and then worked in marketing. But when she volunteered in science outreach programs where she met Owen, she saw the way astronomy seemed to make kids from all walks of life light up. Soon, she began teaching kids about space through programs like Hands-On Universe, and completing a master' s degree in astronomy herself.
At Hillcrest International Schools in Nairobi, preparatory head teacher Surbhi Vashisht says the telescope has hit it big among her students, 170 of whom have participated in Travelling Telescope workshops: looking at the stars, building rockets, and virtually exploring the landscape of Mars. “The children enjoy a lot in the sessions,” she writes in an email.
8. What's the purpose of Mrs. Murabana's Travelling Telescope program?A.To promote the development of astronomy in her country. |
B.To make telescopes affordable to most schools in Kenya. |
C.To inspire kids to be astronomers in the future. |

A couple of weeks ago my parents came to visit me in the southwest of France during my break. As a little surprise for them I planned a trip to a small village in the Pyrenees Mountains called Niaux to seethe famous “Grotte de Niaux”. My dad told me so many stories about the famous “grottes” of Southern France: Lascaux, Font-de-Gaume and the Cave of Niaux. These caves contain paintings drawn between17,000 and 11,000 years ago! Advances in science and technology have enabled scientists and historians to date the paintings accurately by carbon dating (碳定年法)and discover the tools with which people used to draw the paintings, as well as the materials they used. My dad studied these caves when he was a college student, but he didn't have the chance to see one personally. Therefore, I decided to change it!
Many caves that contain prehistoric paintings are no longer accessible to the public. The carbon dioxide that we breathe out and the harsh artificial lights quickly degrade the quality of the paintings, and for many caves, now visitors can only see reconstructions of the original paintings. However, Niaux is an exception. By limiting the number of people allowed in the cave at a time and limiting the artificial lights used to light the paintings, the paintings in Niaux have been well protected so that visitors can see the originals. They were unbelievable! We saw paintings of bison(北美野牛),mountain goats and deer carved on the walls as though they had been done yesterday. They were actually drawn around14,000 years ago!
Many people believe that these paintings were drawn as part of an almost religious ritual(仪式),while others believe they represent the life experiences of the men and women who lived in these caves many years ago. Maybe we will never know for sure why the paintings were drawn, but one thing is for certain - those cavemen were far better at drawing than I am!
12. Why did the author's father tell him many stories about the “grottes”?A.The author asked him to do so. |
B.It was his father's duty. |
C.His father was interested in them. |
D.They weren't known to the author. |
A.Shadows. | B.Copies. |
C.Models. | D.Introductions. |
A.Good protection. | B.Great skill. |
C.Good quality. | D.Dark light. |
A.this was the second time that the author' s father had visited Niaux. |
B.visitors don't know the material used to draw the pictures in Niaux. |
C.only the carbon dioxide people breathe out degraded the quality of the paintings. |
D.visitors don't know clearly why the paintings were drawn. |
Sinks and mirrors in bathrooms can easily become dirty.
If the toothpaste has been sitting there for a while, first try to remove it with a paper towel. You can then apply your favorite bathroom cleaning supplies, Windex, or other glass and surface cleaners.

For very stubborn spots, first, try cleaning the area with a cotton swab (棉签). You’11 need to use some strength .If the cotton swab technique doesn't work, you can scrape (刮擦) the area with a plastic tool, such as a plastic paint scraper. But the surface of mirrors and sinks can easily get damaged by hard things.
A.Consider using other cleaning supplies. |
B.But don't mix cleaning supplies. |

It was a Friday afternoon in November. After school, while all other students left the classroom and headed towards home, Mike stayed to go over what he had learned that day. About twenty minutes later, he took out his schoolbag, and decided to return home.
He looked out of the window and found it was going to rain soon. The wind was blowing violently, and the dark clouds were gathering. Luckily, Mike brought an umbrella to school that morning. Carrying his schoolbag and the umbrella, Mike walked out of the classroom in a hurry. His home was more than three kilometers away. Being afraid of the heavy rain, Mike quickened his steps. After Mike had just walked for dozens of meters, it began to thunder and rain lightly. Mike put up his umbrella to prevent himself from getting wet. He didn't want to get sick because of the cold rain. All of the passers-by alongside the road quickened their steps, and the air was filled with people's anxiety. When Mike walked for about eight minutes, he saw a black car that was not far away slowly pulling up beside the road. A middle-aged driver stepped out of the car and appeared anxious. He checked one of the car's tyres (轮胎),finding his car couldn't move on unless the tyre was repaired. He then brought out some tools from the back of his car and bent down to fix the tyre. It began to rain heavily. But the man didn't return to his car. Instead, he continued to fix his car. He was alone, without an umbrella over his head. The drops of the rain coldly hit the trees' leaves, the ground, and also the man. The raindrops soon left big marks on his gray coat. Seeing that, Mike somehow felt quite sorry for the man. He couldn't help thinking, “If my father is trapped in such a situation, how upset he'll be! And how strongly he may wish that some kind person could help him!”
Paragraph 1:
Thinking of that, Mike ran to the man, without hesitation.

Paragraph 2:
Before long, Mike's shoulder got wet due to the rain.
