One day, a college student was taking a walk with a professor. As they went along, they saw lying in the path a pair of old shoes. They supposed the shoes belonged to a poor man who was employed in a field close by, and who had nearly finished his day’s word.
The student turned to the professor, saying, “ Let us play the man a trick: we will hide his shoes, and hide ourselves behind those bushes, and wait to see his confusion when he cannot find them”.
“My young friend,” answered the professor, “we should never amuse ourselves at the expense of the poor. But you are rich, and may give yourself a much greater pleasure by tricking on the poor man. Put a coin into each shoe, and then we will hide ourselves and watch how the discovery affects him.”
The student did so, and they both placed themselves behind the bushes close by. The poor man soon finished his work, and came across the field to the path where he had left his coat and shoes. After he slipped his foot into one of his shoes, he felt something hard. He bent down to feel w hat it was, and found the coin. Astonishment and wonder were seen on his face.
He fixed his eyes on the coin, turned it round, and looked at it again and again. He then looked around him on all sides, but no person was to be seen. He now put the money into his pocket, and continued to put on the other shoe; but his surprise was doubled on finding the other coin. His feelings overcame him. He fell upon his knees, looked up to heaven and cried a sincere thanksgiving, in which he spoke of his wife, sick and helpless, and his children without bread, Whom the timely help, from some unknown hand, would save from dying.
The student stood there, deeply affected, and his eyes filled with tears.“Now,”said the professor,“are you not much better pleased than if you had played your intended trick?” The youth replied,“You have taught me a lesson which I will never forget.

No one on earth would love to visit a doctor. But no matter how much we hate to knock at the doctor’s door, something or other takes us right there. And the visits increase with age, as does the number of health problems. Now while it is true that doctors cannot be totally done away with, you can keep well just by a smile every now and then.
The reasons are not hard to guess. Everyone likes to share humor. But what you might not know just is that fun, joy and humor are instrumental in improving the mental and physical health of a human being. Research says that the chances of a heart attack are reduced for those who laugh more than their fellows. In the rapid pace of life, every little thing may lead to stress, anxiety or depression. The common cure to all these is nothing but a hearty laugh.
One good thing about laughter is that you can never possibly have enough of fun. If you love to laugh, you are all set to live a healthy stress-free life. And this may hold fine testimony (证明) to all stories of humor or humorous pieces of works, in books or on the Internet. Take for instance the funny stuff you get online to tickle (使发痒) your funny bone. Didn’t you get hooked on it for hours smiling from ear to ear?
Nowadays, the Internet is a place of generating humor where people spend hours to do away with their boredom, or even when they are not bored. In order to see the doctor less people eagerly read jokes, watch funny videos or play fun games.

Scientists in Britain have managed to teach bees to pull strings (线) to get to food and then pass on what they have learned to others in their colony (群体) — showing a high level of intelligence despite their tiny brains.
Researchers at Queen Mary University of London said the experiments, often used to test the intelligence of apes (猿) and birds, showed for the first time that some insects are up to the task, and can also pass skills on through several generations.
The findings add to the evidence suggesting the ability for “culture spread”— the ability to learn and pass on knowledge and skills — may not be exclusive to humans.
In the research, published in the journal PLOS Biology on Tuesday, the scientists were able to train 23 out of a group of 40 bees to pull strings with their legs and feet.
The strings were attached to discs — or artificial “flowers” — containing food at their center but placed under a transparent (透明的) screen. The bees, spotting the food beneath the screen, learned to pull the “flowers” out by pulling the string with their legs and feet to be able to get to it.
From another group of bees given the chance to solve the task without any training, only two of 110 were successful.
Another group of bees was then allowed to observe the trained bees pulling the strings, and 60 percent of them successfully learned the skill. Finally, trained bees were put in colonies, and the scientists found the technique spread successfully to a majority of the colony's worker bees.
Lars Chittka, a Queen Mary University professor who guided the project, said the team is interested in figuring out the brain processes behind the bees' learning and teaching skills.
