In the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games, the athletes were fighting hard to win glory for themselves and their country. Do you care about the gold medal count? Shouldn’t we just enjoy the game? Readers share their opinions.
George
The spirit of the Olympic Games is about sportsmanship and performing your personal best, which brings the whole world together under peace and competition. It was never purely about winning gold medals and dominance, as no single athlete can dominate (统治) the whole Olympic Games. The spirit of the Olympics also give an important message to the world that no single country should seek to dominate over others.
Eric
None of the athletes who fail to win a gold medal have anything to be ashamed of. If they win a medal, great! If they don’t, we know they did their best. One minute on stage, 10 years of practice off stage. The small medals contain their countless efforts. Gold, silver, bronze, even if they didn’t win any medal, we cheer for them and are proud of them. Go China!
Allende
The Chinese delegation has been put on too much pressure, which is unfair to all hard-working athletes. A gold medal is not everything. Think about those players who lost the gold but tried their best, most people do not show friendly sympathy to them, but even lightly blame them, and I was one of these people. I have to take this occasion to apologize for my behavior. Don’t create unreasonable pressure, you are not the one playing the game!

As a young man, Al was a skilled artist. He had a wife and two fine sons. One night, his elder son developed a serious stomachache. Thinking it was only some common disorder, neither Al nor his wife took the condition very seriously. But it was actually acute appendicitis (急性阑尾炎), and the boy died suddenly that night.
Knowing the death could have been prevented if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, Al’s emotional health grew worse under the burden of his guilt. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his six-year-old younger son. The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than Al could handle, and he turned to alcohol. As the alcoholism progressed, Al began to lose everything he possessed.
When I heard of Al’s death, I reacted with disdain (轻蔑). “What a complete failure!” I thought.
As time went by, I began to take my earlier judgment into consideration again. I knew Al’s now adult son, Ernie. He has grown into one of the kindest, most caring and most loving men I have ever known. One day I worked up my courage to talk about my puzzle with him.
Ernie sat quietly and reflected for a few moments. Then he said, “From my earliest memories as a child until I left home at 18, Al came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, ‘I love you, son.’”
Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to judge Al as a failure. He had not left any material possessions behind. But he had been a kind loving father, and he left behind one of the finest, most giving men I have ever known.

When Jack, my husband, and I drove past a fire station with a sign reading, “Are you ready for the next storm?” Our area had just been in the path of Hurricane Irma, causing downed trees and outages. We were stuck in the dark and cut off from the outside world.
We have had our share of storms in the past — a snowstorm and other heavy snows that knocked down trees, sometimes up to a week at a time. Those days in a cold house weren’t fun, but we learned so much from those early storms, things that made later storms easier to bear.
Now we have stored up flashlights, lanterns and candles. We bought a battery-operated radio to keep up with the news. We stocked up on batteries so that we’d have plenty for extended power failures. We make sure our grill (烤架) is ready and its tank is full, and we purchase food that can be easily prepared and then cooked or heated on the grill. And we don’t forget to buy emergency chocolate! We have book lights to read in the dark. We keep our car gas tanks full and have emergency cash on hand.
We’re ready for the next storm, but we wouldn’t have learned to do all those things if we hadn’t encountered a storm in the past. The same is true spiritually. Those little storms in our lives are never fun, but they prepare us for the big storms — the big trials — that will come our way. They can teach us some valuable lessons.
Are you ready for the next storm? Now is the time to get ready... not when the storm arrives.

The therapy (疗法) program “changed my entire way of thinking, and I was able to apply it to other parts of my life as well,” says Genova, who spent 20 years conducting clinical research on anxiety disorders and other behavioral and public health issues before founding Socially Speaking, a social performance and anxiety coaching business.
Anxiety — as it refers to a set of disorders including social anxiety disorder and generalized anxiety disorder, which Genova also has — affects more than 18% of the U.S. adult population each year. That makes it the most common mental illness in the country, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America.
“Anxiety is definitely becoming more common. Chances are, you know someone who suffers from it,” says Angelique Mason, a family nurse practitioner with Penn Medicine at Woodbury Heights in New Jersey, who often sees patients with a range of anxiety disorders.
Incidence of anxiety was on the rise before the COVID-19 pandemic (流行病), but that global health crisis (危机) and following financial and social disorders just threw gas on the anxiety fire for a majority of Americans. An October 2020 survey from the American Psychiatric Association found 62% of Americans feel more anxious than they did at the same time the previous year, a sizable increase over APA surveys conducted over the past three years, in which the number had ranged between 32% and 39%.
Moe Gelbart, director of behavioral health at Torrance Memorial Medical Center in Torrance, California, mentions that “we’re experiencing the highest rates of anxiety we have ever seen. Reasons include fear of the unknown and feelings of helplessness and lack of control.”
Lawrence Lovell, a licensed mental health adviser based in New York City, and founder of Breakthrough Solutions, points to a 2021 report from the Kaiser Family Foundation that found during the pandemic 4 in 10 adults in the U.S. reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder, up from 1 in 10 who reported those symptoms from January to June 2019.
