文章大意:这是一篇议论文。文章主要讨论是否应该展现弱点,及展现弱点的好处。

My boss recently asked me, "Do you know why I hired you? Because you didn't sell yourself. You didn't tell me, 'Look how experienced I am.' You emailed me and said, 'I researched your website and saw how many amazing vets (兽医) you have and I want to learn from them,' and that's why I hired you. You showed vulnerability."

So what is vulnerability? For me, vulnerability means putting your fear of embarrassment aside and allowing personal growth. I believe vulnerability is a pathway to success. Vulnerability has traditionally been viewed as a weakness in the workplace. The very thought of exposing your weaknesses is terrifying. However, we can change the views surrounding it. I'm talking about the vulnerability that strengthens courage and leads to more success as a vet.

After graduation, I started working in a clinic where I thought I would have support. However, I didn't have the help I required. I quickly became exhausted. Within 18 months, I didn't want to be a vet anymore.

During this period, I realized without the support I wanted I was potentially making mistakes I wasn't even aware of. Was I treating patients effectively? I wouldn't know, because I had no one to ask for help.

I decided to be vulnerable. I accepted that I was unhappy, living with poor mental health and lacking important knowledge. I wanted to find somewhere I'd be able to continue building my knowledge, not as an average vet, but as a good one. After two and a half years working as a vet, I have finally found a place where I get the support I need. My point is: don't stay where you are unhappy. Be vulnerable and have the courage to accept when you are unhappy. Find somewhere that will support you and push you to do better.

Vulnerability shouldn't be considered a weakness because it allows personal growth. Vulnerability should be viewed as a strength. To be vulnerable allows you to show people that you cannot always be perfect. Being vulnerable is not a liability (麻烦的事) in the workplace. It is the ability to show people that you are human.

4. Why did the author's boss hire her?
A.She highly recommended herself.B.She had adequate experience.
C.She was honest about her weakness.D.She did research about the company.
5. How does the author personally view vulnerability?
A.It leads to embarrassment.
B.It helps with individual development.
C.It is a weakness in the workplace.
D.It is terrifying to expose your vulnerability.
6. What do paragraphs 3-5 mainly talk about?
A.Why the author quit her previous job.
B.What made the author feel vulnerable.
C.How the author got rid of her vulnerability.
D.Why the author decided to show her vulnerability.
7. What can we conclude about vulnerability from the last paragraph?
A.It inspires people to be perfect.
B.It is normal for people to feel vulnerable.
C.It allows people to discover their strength.
D.It can cause people trouble in the workplace.

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。全文以Banksy的画作被取走的例子导入,接着讨论街头艺术家们面临的进退两难的困境,并围绕这些街头艺术作品的产权归属问题进行探讨。

Early one morning in February, a team of specialists pulled up next to a building in Nottingham. They worked quickly but carefully, removing a small section of the wall on which "Hula-hoop Girl" had been painted by Banksy, an outstanding street artist. John Brandler, a collector, said that he had purchased the artwork from the building's landlord. Local residents were horrified, as the mural (壁画) had spread cheer during the lockdowns in Britain.

It was not the first time Banksy's artwork had been carried off. So many of Banksy's pieces, in particular, have been taken and sold into private collections that they have been brought together to form an exhibition. "The Art of Banksy", the world's largest display of his work, opened in London in May as a paid-for, ticketed exhibition. The show invites art lovers to take cash out to view privately held works intended to be publicly accessible and free. Banksy has criticised the practice, saying that he will not authenticate artworks removed from their original site.

Street art is an unusually risky art form. Painters rarely seek permission to turn a building into a canvas, and so while the artwork belongs to them, the backdrop does not. If they want to protect their pieces from unwanted buyers, artists should ask for permission from the building owner and sign a contract. Another different problem is posed by many street artists' decision to remain anonymous. Artists shield themselves from accusations of deliberately damaging public property by using secret identities, but potentially lose out on the chance to protect their works from copyright theft.

But the legal protections are improving as more people come to appreciate street art's value. Ina case last year, a judge found that famous graffiti (涂鸦) in New York was protected from removal because it had "significant artistic value and cultural importance". Copyright lawsuits are also increasingly common.

8. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A.Local residents are criticizing the removal.
B.Banksy's artwork was taken off by a collector.
C.Hula-hoop Girl has been saved by John Brandler.
D.Banksy is an outstanding street artist around the world.
9. What is Banksy's attitude to the exhibition "The Art of Banksy"?
A.Neutral.B.Positive.
C.Indifferent.D.Disapproving.
10. The underlined-word "anonymous" in paragraph 3 means "          ".
A.famousB.modestC.unidentifiedD.autonomous
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.What is street art?B.Who owns street art?
C.The art of BanksyD.Value of street art

Allergies(过敏)cause loads of trouble. Some people suffer from seasonal hay fever as pollen(花粉)flows through the air. Others react to materials at their very touch. And some sorry souls go into shock at the mere presence of certain foods, particularly peanuts and shellfish.

The cause in each case is an oversensitive immune system. This creates annoying and sometimes life-threatening symptoms. Over-reactive immune systems may not, though, be an entirely bad thing. Another role played by the immune system is to destroy malignant tumors(恶性肿瘤)before they take hold—work carried out recently by Annette Wigertz of the Karolinska Institute, in Stockholm, and her colleague suggests that the immune systems of those with allergies may be particularly good at this.

This finding came after Doctor Wigertz and her team interviewed 1, 527 people with gliomas(a type of brain tumor)in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and the southeast of England. The researchers asked the patients in question whether they had a history of allergies, and then compared the results with those for 3, 309 otherwise similar individuals who did not have brain tumors. As Doctor Wigertz reports in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the tumor-free were more likely to suffer from allergies. The presence of an allergy was associated with a 30% reduction in the likelihood of having a glioma.

This was not all that surprising. Previous research had detected similar correlations, suggesting that a welcome side effect of allergy was resistance to cancer. But this new study went further. It looked carefully at the time in the patients' lives when their allergies were active, and it found that this timing was crucial. Doctor Wigertz noted that the absence of allergy was correlated with the time when the glioma first formed.

Awkwardly, this result is open to two rather different interpretations. The optimistic explanation is that the hyperactive immune system associated with allergy does protect against tumors. The other interpretation is that tumors are doing something as they grow that stops the immune system and thus allergic reactions. Either way, tumor and lack of allergy coincide. And either way, something interesting is going on.

12. What accounts for most allergies?
A.Pollen in-the air.
B.Presence of some food.
C.Sensitivity of the immune system.
D.Overreacting to the world.
13. How is this finding different from those from the previous research?
A.It indicates a benefit of allergy.
B.It uncovers the cause of allergies.
C.It proves the correlations between allergy and cancers.
D.It discovers the cancer started when there was no allergy.
14. What's the last paragraph about?
A.What explains the finding of the research.
B.Why the research on allergy is of significance.
C.Whether cancer is related to the absence of allergy.
D.How allergy protects people against cancers.
15. What can we learn from the research findings?
A.Bad news has wings.
B.When we win some, we lose some.
C.Robbing Peter to pay Paul.
D.One man's meat, another man's poison.
