The new school year has started and it looks much different for many teachers and students. With the COVID-19 pandemic still causing shutdowns, remote learning has become the new normal for schools around the country. Teachers already have the challenge to make lessons engaging for a classroom full of students. As kids are trying to learn from home, some teachers are getting extra creative to get students’ attention.
Bob Moss, a US history teacher at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas, decided to make the most out of the unusual classroom environment and make his subject come to life for his students. He decided to set out on what he called his “Great American History Road Trip.” He not only held remote classes on location at historic sites, but also posted aspects of his adventure on social media. He created a 15-day travel schedule of major historic sites around the county and filmed instructional videos for his students to watch and enjoy, starting on Aug. 21.
“This is something I’d never be able to do in a normal school year,” Moss said. “I was just trying to figure out, how can I make this school year interesting and fun for kids? I mean, I don’t know how to do remote teaching. I wasn’t trained to be an online teacher … So I figured, what if I teach history from the places where it happened? Maybe that would at least make them want to log in to find out where their teacher is every day.”
The 26-year-old experienced teacher used his personal savings to fund the trip. He loaded up himself with a few personal belongings and a lot of equipment to make sure he could capture each of the locations where history happened.
In the end, though, it was not only a unique learning opportunity for his students but also a way for him to find his passion for teaching once again in a challenging time.

Journalist John Smith says that so many scientists visit Yellowstone National Park — close to 4 million a year — that it’s stressing the park’s ecosystem. But, he adds, the development of private lands around the park is an even greater threat.
“People come to buy a small farm of 300 acres, and they build a house, get a road and a satellite dish. They turn what was wild landscape into human-occupied landscape,” Smith says. “And that’s problematic for the elk that move through these corridors.
The elk of Yellowstone National Park spend their summer in the high country of Yellowstone, feeding on high grass that remain green through the summer, but in the winter, those high places become very cold, and so the elk move down to lower places in the surrounding land onto national forests and in some cases onto large private ranches.
If those private lands are transformed from open land into small farms, to shopping malls, to roads, to Starbucks, if those places are all settled for the benefit of humans, then the elk are not going to be able to move in and out of Yellowstone National Park any more. And if the elk can’t move into the park, then that creates problems for the wolves and a lot of other creatures. The elk are the most abundant large herbivores in the Yellowstone ecosystem. Those moving routes need to stay open.
Smith notes that Yellowstone National Park is just one part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, a 22 million-acre area that also includes Grand Teton National Park, a portion of the Wind River Indian Reservation and other private and federally owned lands. Because the animals in Yellowstone need to move outside the park in the winter, the lands in the greater ecosystem play an important role in the park’s continued existence.
“It has been realized in recent decades that Yellowstone National Park is not an island,” Smith says. “It’s part of this larger system, this larger body of wild landscape, and it needs the rest of this wild landscape just as the rest of the wild landscape needs it.”

It was called as a huge step forward. Two American astronauts--Anne McClain and Christina Koch, were scheduled on March 29 by the Canadian Space Agency to lead the first all-female spacewalk.
However, due to McClain requesting a change in her spacesuit size less than a week ago, only Koch spacewalked with a male colleague on the 29th. Together, they upgraded the batteries for the International Space Station’s solar power system. McClain spacewalked on April 7 for the second time, having done so already on March 22.
A spacewalk is when an astronaut leaves their vehicle and goes out in space. Astronauts wear one of eleven spacesuits on the ISS, each of which costs $22 million! The spacesuits provide oxygen, water, and two key safety parts. These include small jet thrusters(推进器)to allow astronauts to move around in space, and safety tethers(栓)that keep their tools and them from floating into forgetfulness. It is very important that spacesuits fit the astronauts perfectly.
A spacewalk isn’t all fun and games. When astronauts risk into black space, even the most small tear or pieces can lead to a terrible leak in the spacesuit. If astronauts put on their weighty 330-pound suit too quickly before heading outside, the rapid change in air pressure could cause nitrogen gas bubbles to enlarge in their blood vessels. This could cause severe pain to even death. And the worst of all: The safety tether could break and strand the astronaut in space. Astronauts must remain cautious while on complex spacewalks: the scenery may be amazing, but no one wants to be stuck above the Earth forever!
Regardless, Koch and McClain are important figures since less than eleven percent of the people who have gone to space are women. These spacewalkers are inspiring girls around the world. Hopefully, there will even be more women in action in the future!
12. Why did McClain fail to spacewalk with Koch?A.Her spacesuit didn’t fit her. |
B.She made a request in her partner. |
C.The solar power system of ISS didn’t work. |
D.The battery for her spacewalk needs upgrading. |

A.Spacewalk is an unusual experience. | B.It is remarkable to have a spacewalk. |
C.Spacewalk can be dangerous. | D.Spacewalk is a chance to enjoy the scenery. |

C.Astronauts Dream to Do Spacewalking | D.Women Make History with a Spacewalk |
