A qualified doctor who rarely practised but instead devoted his life to writing once said, “Medicine is my lawful wife and literature is my lover.” Russian writer Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was a great playwright (剧作家) and one of the masters of the modern short story.
When Chekhov entered the Medical School of Moscow University in 1879, he started to publish hundreds of comic short stories to support his family. After he graduated, he wrote regularly for a local daily newspaper.
As a writer he was extremely fast — often produced a short story in an hour or less. Chekhov's medical and science experience can be seen through the indifference many of his characters show to tragic events. In 1892, he became a full-time writer and published some of his most memorable stories.
Chekhov often wrote about the sufferings of civilians in small towns of Russia. Tragic events controlled his characters who were filled with feelings of hopelessness and despair.
It is often said that nothing happens in Chekhov's stories and plays. He made up for this with his exciting technique for developing drama within his characters. Chekhov's works combined the calm attitude of a scientist and doctor with the sensitivity of an artist.
Some of Chekhov's works were translated into Chinese as early as the 1940s. One of his famous stories, The Man in a Case, about a school teacher's extraordinarily orderly life was selected as a text for Chinese senior students.

Sleep to Lose Weight
A recent study found that people who sleep less tend to be fat. Experts said it's time to find out if more sleep can fight obesity.
Nowadays, the most popular method to keep fit is doing more exercise and eating less. Some people even take weight-loss drugs to keep slim, which is unhealthy and harmful to your body. "
Men sleep an average of 27 minutes less than women, and overweight and fat patients sleep less than patients with normal weights. In general, fat people just sleep about 1.8 hours less a week than those with normal weights.
We caution that this study does not establish a cause-and-effect relationship between limited sleep and fatness.
Here are some other advantages of sleeping more.
• You'll learn better.
This isn't just for children. Adults who get enough sleep also do better on tests of short-term memory.
•
After getting enough sleep, you will find yourself feeling happy and delighted.
• Lower stress.
A.Better mood. |
B.You will be energized. |
C.Sleep can definitely reduce levels of stress. |
D.We've put so much emphasis on diet and exercise. |
E.The study is intended to offer a healthy way to help people sleep longer. |
F.The experts suggest that too much extension of sleep time not be necessary. |
G.However, investigations of successful weight loss by sleeping more help prove such a connection. |

In 2000, when I was around seven years old, my parents, sister, brother, and I were coming back from a T-ball game. That was our usual weekend adventure, but unlike every other weekend, a surprise was waiting for us in our driveway. There, we spotted two adult geese and a baby goose. The adults were shocked by our return and flew away, but their baby was still too young to fly and couldn’t follow. We are no strangers to the ways of wildlife, so we knew to avoid physical contact with the baby goose out of fear that it would imprint upon us and be lost to its family forever.
Hours passed, and night fell. With it came a deep cold and a fear of watchful predators (捕食者).The tiny little thing was wandering around our yard, unaware of what could happen, and it was clear that the baby goose needed protection, warmth, and nutrients to make it to the morning. At that point. we knew we had to step in and brought him onto our back porch(门厅).
We all pretty much slept with one eye open till morning came. And then another morning. And still another. Each morning, we would try to send the goose over to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He wouldn't go to them, though, and they wouldn't come close enough to claim him. We kept this up for five days, but no luck. By then, the young goose had clearly decided we were his new family, so we had to give him a name-Peeper, because he would follow us around the yard making a peeping noise, nonstop.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months until almost a year passed. We settled into a routine filled with feathery hugs and friendship. Peeper slept on our back porch each night and my dad would clean the goose droppings in the morning. Part of the routine included dad throwing Peeper up into the air so he could fly a loop (圈)around the house, coming back again once the porch was clean.
