Writing for Academic Publication

Online Session, 10 weeks

Do you need to publish your research in an international journal? If so, you are certainly not alone. However, writing for academic publication is not a “natural talent”—it is a craft scholars need to learn and develop. This course is designed to give you the necessary tools for that craft, to write research articles in your specific field.

This online course aims to help students develop an awareness of the Research Article(RA)genre, different approaches to RA development, and how to navigate (领航) the academic publishing process in general.

The course is designed for international graduate students(MA and PhD), but may be useful to anyone seeking to develop their RA writing skills. Participants may begin the course at any stage of the research process, but the course will be especially useful to those who already have some data collected.

•Open to graduate students and upper division (毕业水平) students working on major research projects.

•Students enrolling as undergraduates should contact the Summer English Language Studies office for registration permission.

Involvement of the student’s advisor is encouraged, but not a must.

By the end of the course, you will demonstrate that you can write a draft of a full research article in your specific academic field. You can use this article as an example for new manuscripts you write in the future.

Additional information about the course and instructor can be found on this page.

Note: This is a unique opportunity this year to take this UC Berkeley course from anywhere in the world. This course does not require students to be in the Berkeley-area during the course. Students with internet access may enroll and participate in the course wherever it suits them.

“Anyone knows single parents who can’t afford to get their child’s hair done for school? I will braid (编辫子) it for free!”Brittany Starks wrote on a Facebook post.

She decided to offer her hair braiding services after a family friend delivered backpacks full of school supplies, clothing and shoes for Cayden and Ceniyah in early August. “At the time, I didn’t have anything for my kids to start school,” said Starks, who is in between homes and staying with her mother. “It meant so much to me.”

The unexpected gift made a big difference to Starks and her children, and it motivated her to pay it forward. Starks, who works two receptionist jobs, also braids hair part-time. “The hair-braiding process involves washing, blow-drying, and finally dividing the hair into small sections and braiding it. It also requires multiple supplies — including combs, brushes, hair jam and additional pieces of hair to weave in. It costs anywhere from $150 to $400 at a salon (美发厅), depending on the style,” Stacks explained. “But it can last for months and is a huge timesaver in the mornings.”

When she wrote the Facebook post, she assumed only a handful of people would reach out,but before she knew it, she had 35 appointments booked. Her Facebook inbox was suddenly full of messages from single parents, whose stories of hardship and financial challenges mirrored her own.

“There’s a huge need for this. I could really relate to a lot of the women who reached out, and it made me realize that what I was doing was really important,” said Stacks. “What got me the most was seeing the kids smile.” Given that there was less than two weeks before the start of school, Starks knew she needed to enlist help.

4. What got Brittany Starks to offer her hair braiding service?
A.A post on Facebook.B.Her friend’s timely help.
C.Her mother’s advice.D.A trip to her kids’ school.
5. What does Starks say about hair braiding?
A.It’s a bit dear.B.It’s time-wasting.
C.It’s an easy job.D.It’s a mother’s duty.
6. How does Starks feel about the response to her Facebook post?
A.Rather disturbing.B.Beyond expectation.
C.Far from satisfactory.D.Very disappointing.
7. What can we infer about Brittany Starks from the text?
A.She is single with one child.B.She is ambitious and arbitrary.
C.She is in need of helping hands.D.She is free from financial worries.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是一项新的研究发现,狗主人如何养育狗就会影响他长大后成为什么样的狗。

Parenting styles and choices are known to influence the way that children develop and grow. Researchers are now discovering more about a similar relationship between owners and their pets. How you “parent” your dog has an impact on the kind of dog it grows up to be.

The researchers studied 48 dog owners and their dogs, asking them to complete a pet parenting style survey before joining in three behavioral tests in the lab, assessing attachments and interactions between the dog and their human owners. Then researchers put the dog owners into three categories: authoritative (high expectations, high responsiveness), authoritarian (high expectations, low responsiveness), and permissive (low expectations, high responsiveness). The three behavioral tests covered attachment (how the dog responded to its owner during close interactions), sociability (how the dog responded when a stranger and its owner changed places with one another in the testing room), and problem-solving.

Dogs with authoritative owners had the highest rate of secure attachment and were highly social and sensitive to social context, compared to dogs with authoritarian or permissive owners. What’s more, the only dogs to solve the problem best came from the authoritative group. So researchers came with the conclusion that an owner who’s highly responsive to a dog’s behavior and needs tends to lead to a more social, secure, and smart dog.

The study matches up in some ways with previous research into parents and kids, specifically that children with authoritative parents are more likely to show secure attachment. It is thought to be because of the reliable support they get. “This research shows that the pet dog-human caretaker bond may be functionally and emotionally similar to the bond between a human parent and their child,” says behavioral scientist Lauren Brubaker.

For now, though the study is enough to show that there is some kind of relationship between the approach we take as dog owners and the way that those dogs then behave, there are even numerous other factors in play. “We still need to conduct more research in this area,” said the researchers in their published paper.

8. What can we know about the research?
A.Behavioral tests were conducted before a pet parenting style survey.
B.The authoritarian dog owners had lower expectations and responsiveness.
C.The behavioral tests included attachment, sociability and problem-solving.

A.The purpose of the research.B.The findings of the research.
C.The process of the research.D.The participants of the research.
10. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 refers to?
A.parentsB.pet mastersC.dog ownersD.children
11. What’s the purpose of the text?
A.To inform readers of a research finding.
B.To advertise some different pet parenting styles.
C.To instruct parents how to parent their kids.
D.To persuade dog owners to be authoritative.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。主要论述的是完美与成为完美并不都是完美的事情,完美是一把双刃剑。

Being perfect is something many of us want and try to achieve. It makes us feel we’re correct and that our hard work has paid off. However, as much as perfection and being perfect is not all a perfect thing.

Perfection is all about being without mistakes and criticism. Wanting or trying to be perfect can make it hard to admit a mistake. Nevertheless, it is important to admit mistakes and work to fix them. Not being able to take criticism and fix mistakes is being proud, not perfection.

Perfection is a double-edged sword. In our lives, we want perfection. Perfection holds us responsible; it’s the mistakes and imperfection that keeps pushing us harder and further at what we do. It’s the perfect motivator. But it’s also the perfect killer. For example, the movie “Black Swan” showcased how perfection can kill us. Working and training and stress hurt our body, mind, and so much more that we can’t do it any more.

But perfection can also have the opposite effect. The movie “High Strung” showed that perfection doesn’t exist, but practicing and pushing ourselves can bring us great rewards. In “Black Swan,” the main character tried to be perfect but he also compared himself to someone else who he thought was better than him. This added more pressure and self-doubt, which can cause unhealthy ways of achieving perfection. The main character of “Black Swan” didn’t know when to stop, whereas the main character of “High Strung” did, or at least didn’t focus so much on the comparison, and instead focused on the competition and the ones she cared about.

Perfection is something we can’t live without and can’t live with. The only way to keep the sword from cutting us is if we know when to stop. Some days are going to be good days and others will be bad. We have to take whatever day it is — perfect or imperfect — and hope that’s enough.

12. What is the common belief about perfection according to Paragraph 1?
A.Being perfect makes us feel fulfilled.
B.Being perfect is what all of us long for.
C.Being perfect is not good at all.
D.Being perfect is out of reach.
13. Why does the author mention the character in “Black Swan”?
A.To tell us “Black Swan ” is worth seeing.B.To advise us to stop trying hard.
C.To show the benefits of perfection.D.To warn us of the harm of perfection.
14. What does the author advise us to do while trying to be perfect?
A.Try not to make mistakes.B.Stop before going too far.
C.Push ourselves harder.D.Prove our ability to others.
15. What is the attitude of the author to perfection?
A.Indifferent.B.Supportive.
C.Objective.D.Disapproving.
