文章大意:这是一篇说明文。研究发现玩互动视频游戏在预防老年人智力下降方面比单独锻炼更有效。

Current medical guidelines in many parts of the world recommend mild exercise for older people as a way to prevent both physical and mental decline. However, if you want to help your grandma stay mentally sharp into her golden years, you could buy her an Xbox, the latest research suggests. Researchers have conducted a study that found playing interactive video games could be more effective than just exercise alone in preventing mental decline in older people.

To investigate this, the researchers compared two groups of people aged 72 years and over, one of which did standard exercise for 12 weeks, and at the same time the other instead played sports games on an Xbox, which combine regular exercise with cognitive (认知的) exercise.

The study’s senior author, Tracy Kolbe Alexander said they found a marked difference in the results between the two groups. The 45 participants took cognitive assessment test before and after the 12-week program and the gaming group showed improvements in cognitive ability. All the participants had reported mild forms of memory loss but none had any form of dementia (痴呆) diagnosed when the experiment was done. However, the participants using Xbox showed physical improvement particularly in aspects such as strength and balance, which the researchers said were very important to preventing falls.

“We are not so sure that interactive gaming is going to prevent dementia or anything like that, but our results showed a clear cognitive benefit,” Professor Kolbe Alexander said, “Keeping up physical activities via interactive gaming could also be of benefit to older people who lived in areas where there were physical barriers to exercise, such as lack of access to parks or walking tracks.”

16. How did the researchers conduct the investigation?
A.By listing examples.B.By making explanations.

D.Cognition can be improved by standard exercise.
19. In which section of a newspaper can the text be found?

It’s clear that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected people’s mental health. This, in turn, has led to our poor performance on tasks that require attention, memory or decision making. Though the worst period of the pandemic may have passed — cases and deaths are falling,     20    . Here are some methods you can use to clear the “fog” away.

Be careful about negative news

Whether we’re trying and failing to make plans or keeping up with the ever-changing recommendations about COVID-19, it’s hard to avoid anxiety about the future, which impacts our brains. Unfortunately, many social media sites make their money by grabbing our attention — and nothing grabs attention better than negative news.     21    . To reduce depression and keep sharp, you can cut down on your media consumption and be careful about news.

Exercise regularly — outside, if you can

22    . When we exercise, we encourage blood to flow through our bodies. If there is a park nearby, try spending some time exercising in green spaces. Research confirms that being out in natural settings is helpful for our cognition.

    23

The lack of socializing during lockdowns may have been particularly hard on people’s cognition. A recent review of many studies confirms that socializing is important in keeping yourself cognitively fit. So, it’s a good idea to try to be with others to keep your brain functioning well.

Try new challenges

While many of us have been at our wits’ end (束手无策) during the pandemic years, we can do something good for our brains at any time: learn new things. Whether there’s a pandemic or not,     24    . Including new things into your everyday routine — such as taking a new walking route or trying out a new recipe — could give your brain a fun workout.

A.Stay connected with others
B.Look through the social websites
C.Repeated exposure to negative news does harm to our well-being
D.using your brain in new, challenging ways will help it stay healthy
E.Getting exercise, on the other hand, is often tied to better cognition
F.many of us are still suffering due to the pandemic in the form of “brain fog”
G.One of the best tools for fighting depression and thinking more clearly is exercise
