One day, when I was walking through the empty street in Stanislau, California, I saw an old man stand in front of a little house. He invited me in. In the house, I saw a bright rug(小地毯)on the clean floor. Pictures hung all around the room. On the little tables there were books and vases full of flowers.
The pleasure 1 felt in my heart must have shown on my face.
“Yes," he smiled, "it is all her work. Everything in this room has the touch of her hands. She is nineteen. We were married just six months ago. You'll see her tonight!"
“Where is she now?” I asked.
“Oh, she went to visit her parents,“ the man sighed. "They live forty miles from here. She has been away for two weeks and she will be back soon."
The man told me his name was Henry. Then we talked about many different things, but mainly about her.
In the evening, we had a visitor. He was a grey-haired gold miner named Tom. "I just came for a few minutes to ask when she is coming home," he explained. "Is there any news?”
“Oh yes. I got a letter. Would you like to hear it?” the old man replied, taking a yellowed letter out of his pocket and started reading to us.
It was full of loving messages to him and to other people-their close friends and neighbors. When the man finished, he looked at his friend. “Oh, Tom! You always cry when I read a letter from her, I'm going to tell her this time!”
“No, you must not do that, Henry,“ Tom said. "I am getting old. And any little sorrow makes me cry. I really hope she would be here tonight."
Then he started to give Henry glasses of wine. When I reached for one, he stopped me. After Henry emptied the last glass, he got very drunk and fell fast asleep.
“His wife has been dead for nineteen years," Tom said, looking into my eyes.
“Dead?” I whispered.
