At this selection of five museums, more French will be heard and visitors might feel a sense of satisfaction when knowing they have arrived at a place that native Parisians also enjoy when going on a trip.
Museum of Natural History
Being a must-see spot in the museum at present, the Grand Gallery of Evolution dates back to the 1880s. Originally playing as a zoology building, it reopened to the public in 1994 after decades of ignorance. The entire museum displays more than 9,000 preserved animals and insects.
Museum of Music
The museum’s collection covers centuries of European classical music and instruments, with decorated pianos and hundreds of horns and string instruments. Live performances take place in the galleries of the museum every day. The museum provides two versions of its English-language audio guide, one for children and the other for adults.
Fairground Art Museum
At this museum, guides describe the history of Europe’s traveling fairs and explain signs that identify the origin of the country with a carousel horse. Reserve your tickets in advance on the museum’s website. Tours in French are offered several days a week all year round, and English-language tours are offered in the summer months.
Museum of Arts and Crafts
It was founded during the French Revolution to show its advanced science and technologies and has since received constant updates. Early planes, including the first to cross the English Channel, hang from the ceiling of one building. The collection has a huge range, with antique cars, early engines and elements (元素) used in the construction of the Statue of Liberty.
Museum of Magic
Each visit to this museum begins with a short performance of simple tricks, followed by a guided tour of the magic tools and objects on display in those 16th-century basements. This tour currently takes place in French, so English-speaking visitors may want to explore on their own with the help of English-language guidebooks available at the entrance.

Are your childhood memories closely connected with cycling? Perhaps you even remember the pride in getting your first bike on your birthday, complete with streamers (装饰彩纸条) coming out of the handlebars, and the excitement of coasting down the tallest hill in town? When we were children, biking gave us independence, a sense of self, adventure and excitement, but city biking poses challenges to us when we are adults.
Obviously, biking brings a number of benefits to the riders, but why aren’t there more bikers on city roads? Goodordering, a company that designs bags to suit modern active lifestyles, conducted a survey and found out that the number one factor preventing people from biking to work was the realization of road safety”—sharing the road with cars can be dangerous.
Omar Bakhshi, a UK-based developer, experienced this first-hand. A car brushed against him while he was cycling, leaving him with an injury that impacted his taste and smell for life. Bakhshi realized what happened to him wasn’t unusual. Because bikers often experience close encounters (相撞) with cars, Bakhshi set out to make the roads safer for urban cyclists to use.
His company, Tether, is launching a small sensor that goes on a bike’s handlebars. As the biker rides through the city, the device projects (投影) a “safety zone” of lights onto the pavement. The hope is that these lights will force car drivers to sit up and pay attention to the rules of sharing the road. If cars get too close to the biker’s personal space, the lights will start shining.
What makes Bakhsh’s device different from similar devices on the market is its smart features. Tether’s device collects data from close encounters with cars and then the data is organized into a central database. The data can be accessed by bikers to determine which streets are safer for cyclists and choose a route to avoid areas that have a large number of close encounters with cars.

For centuries, people in Baltic nations have used ancient amber (琥珀) for medical purposes. Even today, babies are given amber necklaces to help relieve teething pain, and people put the amber powder in some medicines for its special effects.
Now, scientists have found substances (物质) that help explain amber’s medical effects and that could lead to new medicines to fight antibiotic-resistant (耐抗生素的) diseases. Each year in the US, at least 2.8 million people get antibiotic-resistant diseases, leading to around 35,000deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “We knew from previous research that there were substances in Baltic amber that might lead to new antibiotics, but they had not been systematically explored,” says Elizabeth Ambrose, the main investigator of the project. “We have now identified several substances in Baltic amber that show activity against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.”
Ambrose’s interest originally came from her Baltic heritage. While visiting her family in Lithuania, she collected some amber and heard stories about its medical uses. Ambrose and a graduate student Connor McDermott, who is at the University of Minnesota, analyzed commercially available Baltic amber samples, in addition to some that Ambrose had collected.
“One major challenge was getting a fine powder from the amber,” McDermott explains. Through trial and error, he finally got it. Then some substances were identified. Because these .substances are difficult to deal with, the researchers bought pure samples and sent them to a company that tested their activity against nine bacterial species, some of which are known to be antibiotic-resistant. “The most important finding is that these substances are active against gram-positive bacteria,” McDermott says.
“Moving forward with these results makes us elated,” Ambrose says. “Some newly discovered substances are probably the source of new medicines, especially for treating diseases caused by gram-positive bacteria, which are increasingly becoming resistant to known antibiotics.” As scientists study the active properties of other traditional medicines from around the world, it’ll be great to see other findings.
8. What’s the finding of the new study?A.Medical effects of amber lack scientific bases. |
B.Amber can be used for curing some mental illnesses. |
C.Antibiotic-resistant diseases have caused many deaths. |
D.Substances in amber can help fight drug-resistant bacteria. |
A.A cultural exchange program at college. |
B.The success of former amber researchers. |
C.The traditional belief in its medical value. |
D.Her determination to contribute to medicine. |
A.To acquire better amber. |
B.To seek technical support. |
C.To raise funds for their research. |
D.To mass-produce their new medicine. |
A.Confused. | B.Anxious. | C.Excited. | D.Disappointed. |
Tsunamis are one of the most terrifying natural phenomena that the world suffers. The series of waves generated by the displacement (位移) of a large volume of water can be caused by several events, including earthquakes, underwater explosions and landslides. Once triggered (引发), a tsunami can hit the coast within minutes and its destructive power can be enormous.
At present, early warning systems rely on measuring the movement of dart buoys (浮标), which record changes in the sea level, or assessing the bottom water pressure of the developing tsunami. But they require the tsunami to physically reach the measurement location. The buoys could be fixed in the deep ocean, but this requires an unrealistically big number of buoys. Or people can fix the buoys along the shoreline, but due to the high speed of the tsunami, this method may leave no warning time for people on the land.
Instead, there is a new system — using sound waves to predict tsunamis. Sound waves caused by an earthquake can travel much faster than the tsunami that has been triggered. Using standard underwater microphones, we can record these sound waves long before the tsunami arrives regardless of the direction in which the tsunami will travel. The sound signals come from changes in pressure, so what we actually analyze is a series of data on how the pressure is changing over time. Though buoys also show changes in pressure, the tsunami front must actually reach the buoys to inform us that there is an increase in the water surface. By using underwater microphones, however, we only need to catch the sound signals.
Though the idea of using sound waves to predict tsunamis has been put forward previously, the key to our idea is a new mathematical method that can be used to analyze these recorded sound signals in near real-time. Once this is worked out, we can not only warn people of a tsunami but also more accurately estimate its size long before it reaches the shoreline.
12. From Paragraph 1, we know ______.A.what can trigger off tsunamis |
B.how to predict tsunamis effectively |
C.why tsunamis are the worst natural disaster |
D.how to protect the coastal areas from tsunamis |

When the telephone rang in the police station that day, no one there imagined they would receive an unusual call. Most calls reported illegal actions or emergencies, but this one was quite different.
“Hello,” a woman said in a weak voice. “I wonder if you can help me. I can’t leave the house, and I haven’t eaten for three days.” The operator was surprised but he asked for her name and address, and soon two police officers, Steve and Garret, were sent to deal with the case.
To their surprise, the address took them to a beautiful house with a big garden in a pricey neighborhood. Steve and Garret began to think the call might be a trick. With doubts, they rang the doorbell. After quite a while, a tiny old woman opened the door, with a bandage (绷带) roughly wrapped around her left arm.
Later, they knew the woman called Hilda Ross fell off a ladder (梯子) and that her left arm was injured. When asked why she didn’t go to the hospital, she said, “It’s just a sprain (扭伤). The only problem is that it hurts so much that I can hardly walk to the store to buy food. I didn’t ask neighbors for help since I just moved in weeks ago, neither knowing anyone nor having any friends here. My son David lives with me, but he’s on a business trip and won’t be back soon. So I had to look after myself. I didn’t tell my son about my situation because he just started a new job. I didn’t want to worry him.”
Clearly, Mrs Ross was very weak. So Steve and Garret offered to drive her to the hospital, but she refused, saying she didn’t want to trouble them so much and that she just hoped they could help her get some food with her money. However, they insisted on taking her to the hospital.
