I still remember how excited I was when receiving a film camera as a gift. On receiving it, I jumped on my bike, headed to Wimbledon Common and took photos, just for me: photos of trees and wildlife. I was out all day. On my way home I spotted a tree lit up by street lighting and tried to capture its beauty. Rushing home, I popped the spent film (胶片) in a special little envelope and sent it off to a photography store, desperate to see how it came out. I took many photos then and loved the fact that when you processed your film you got back colour photos which froze the precious moments, gently encouraging the hobby.

As I grew into adulthood, that simple, deep happiness gradually faded away. One weekend when I was busy answering the work calls, my eyes caught a box in the corner of the room. I suddenly felt a sense of sadness. The stress growing over these years had pushed the camera from beside my pillow to the box in the corner. I thought I needed a change.

I took out the camera and dusted (擦灰) it down. It was a great joy that it still worked. I bought new film and took the camera everywhere I went. Now it is always on hand to accompany me on journeys, to allow me time to myself. Even if the day is full and busy, I can seize some moments for myself to take photos, to observe the world around me.

The wall of my room now holds all my camera equipment on display, along with photos I’ve taken. To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight.

6. What did the author get from picking up his hobby?

7. What is the best title for the text?
A.Appreciating Beauty in Daily Life
B.Reducing Teenage Sadness with Camera
C.Regaining Pleasure Through Photography

The old saying “Use it or lose it” doesn’t appear to be true when it comes to someone’s ability to preserve and use a foreign language, a new study has revealed.

The research team tasked almost 500 British people who had taken French GCSE or A-level between the 1970s and 2020 with completing a French vocabulary and grammar test. They included a survey of whether participants had used their French knowledge over the years since their exams, and excluded (排除) anyone who had studied a language later on in life.

They found that participants who had taken their exam 50 years ago and not used French since performed at the same level as recent school leavers, and as well as those who used French occasionally.

Lead researcher Monika Schmid said: “The knowledge of language is astonishingly stable over long periods of time, compared to other subjects such as maths, history or science. This is likely because of the way language is stored in memory. Vocabulary is memorized in the same way that facts, dates and names are, while this memory may become weaker over time, and grammar is learned in a similar way to riding a bike, a kind of muscle memory, which is much more stable. Vocabulary knowledge on the other hand, exists in a highly connected network, which means that we need only be reminded of a word that sounds similar to a foreign language word for our brain to recall it.”

“Many people are put off revisiting languages they once learnt as they fear they will be forced to relive (重温) some of the more ‘boring’ element s of the courses, such as grammar, but our work suggests that this would not be necessary. We hope that it might encourage more people to pick foreign languages back up if they know it would only take a short amount of time in refresher lessons to bounce back to their original level,” Schmid added.

8. What did the researchers ask the participants to do?
A.Take a French exam.B.Conduct a survey in French.
C.Learn French from recent school leavers.D.Talk about their French GCSE experience.
9. What can help us recall a foreign word?
A.A fact related to it.B.Our muscle memory.
C.The grammar of the language.D.A similar-sounding word.
10. What can we infer from Schmid’s words in the last paragraph?
A.Years of use promises fluency in a foreign language.
B.One is able to quickly and easily re learn a language.
C.The boring elements of a language course are important.
D.Refresher lessons are necessary in picking foreign languages back up.
11. Which of the following statements may the author agree with?
A.Language tests truly matters at school.
B.If you don’t use a language, you’ll lose it.
C.Knowledge of foreign languages can last a lifetime.
D.Grammar is the most important part in language learning.

Gardeners who use pesticides (杀虫剂) are contributing to a smaller number of British songbirds, a study suggests. Scientists have urged people not to spray their gardens with poisons in order to halt bird decrease and adopt wildlife-friendly practices instead. The results of the University of Sussex study, which researchers call the first of its kind, were published in the journal Science of the Total Environment.

The experiment, which surveyed 615 gardens in Britain, found 25% fewer house sparrows when glyphosate (草甘膦) was used regularly. This is an ingredient found in commonly used herbicide (除草剂) brands such as Roundup or Gallup. Slug pellets (鼻涕虫杀虫剂) also seemed to have an effect on bird sightings; in gardens where Slug pellets were used, house sparrow numbers were down by almost 40%.

Prof. Dave Goulson, a scientist at the University of Sussex, said, “The UK has 22 million gardens, which could be a fantastic home for wildlife, but not if they are overly tidy and sprayed with poisons. We just don’t need pesticides in our gardens. Many towns around the world are now pesticide free. We should simply stop the use of these poisons in urban areas, following the example of France.” The Royal Horticultural Society, the UK’s leading gardening charity, said the use of pesticides and herbicides should be avoided if possible and they should only be used, if ever, in small and targeted applications.

The research also found that those who adopted wildlife-friendly practices such as planting native bushes and flowers, or digging a wildlife pond, saw more birds than those who did not. Cannelle Tassin de Montaigu, a PhD researcher within the school of life sciences and an author of the study, said, “It’s encouraging to find that simple measures, such as planting native bushes and trees and creating a pond, together with avoiding the use of pesticides, really make a measurable difference to the number of birds you will see in your garden.”

12. What does the underlined word “halt” in paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A.show.B.record.C.stop.D.mark.

A.To compare the effects of two kinds of pesticides.
B.To help gardeners choose the proper pesticides.
C.To convince readers of the importance of house sparrows.
D.To show the huge influence of pesticides on birds.
14. What can be inferred from Prof. Dave Goulson’s words?
A.Pesticides use should be avoided throughout the UK.
B.The gardens in the UK are so tidy that pesticides are not needed.
C.Some countries like France have made urban areas pesticide free.
D.The extremely tidy gardens are ideal places for wildlife in the UK.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Effective ways to increase the number of birds.
B.Alternative methods to keep gardens tidy.
C.Other researchers’ interest in the experiment.
D.Gardeners’ attitudes towards the experiment.
