文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了Sandy Hazelip和Ellie Hamby两位老人在80岁还坚持周游世界的事迹。

When you picture yourself in your 80s, what do you see? Many people imagine a life of comfort, but best friends Sandy Hazelip and Ellie Hamby see things a little bit differently. “Don’t sit in that chair and waste away,” Sandy said. “If you don’t use it, you lose it.”

Those are words to live by for these two people! Ellie and Sandy are from the same city, but they met while traveling in Africa many years ago. Ellie, an international documentary photographer, has traveled to 107 countries and visited all 7 continents (洲) for her work. Sandy, or Dr. Sandy as she’s known, is a physician.

Two years ago, the now-81-year-olds started planning an adventure they called “Around the World at 80”, inspired by the Jules Verne novel, “Around the World in 80 Days”. Their goal was to travel to all seven continents, see 9 Wonders of the World, and visit 18 countries in about two-and-a-half months. Unluckily, their plans were put on hold for a few years due to COVID-19 pandemic, but in 2023 they finally hit the road with a new motto: “81 and still on the run!”

So far, they’ve seen the Northern Lights, stood in the shadow of the Easter Island statues, played with penguins in Antarctica, gone dog-sledding, flown over Mt. Everest in an airplane, and enjoyed many other fabulous short journeys. Everywhere they go, they chat with the people they meet and make new friends, which is all part of their mission. “The Number One thing is meeting people,” said Ellie. “We love people. We just love to talk to people, and the world is full of the greatest, most exciting, most interesting people.”

Nothing slows these two seniors down, not even total knee replacements for both of them. Ellie documents their journey with photos on Facebook, and they maintain a blog. Sandy and Ellie hope to inspire others to keep moving into their golden years!

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一种新型智能行李箱,它是以色列NUA Robotics公司研发的,主人走到哪它就跟到哪。

Thanks to this new hands-free suitcase, carrying around heavy luggage may soon become a thing of the past. Designed by an Israeli company NUA Robotics, this “smart” suitcase will follow you everywhere you go.

The carry-on suitcase, currently a prototype (雏形), connects to a smart phone app via Bluetooth. It has a built-in camera sensor that can “see” you and follow you around on flat surfaces like airport floors. It comes with an anti-theft alarm to prevent someone carrying it away when you’re not looking and it has a backup battery that you can use to charge all your devices.

“It can follow and carry things for people around while communicating with their smart phone, and avoiding obstacles,” explained Alex Libman, founder of NUA Robotics. “We’re combining sensor network, computer vision, and robotics. So if you download our app, press the follow-me button, the luggage recognizes the specific user and knows to follow and communicate.”

NUA is still testing the device and trying to improve features like speed and customization (定制), but they hope to make the suitcase available to customers in a year’s time. If it proves successful, they want to use the Bluetooth pairing technology to automate lots of other devices, like shopping carts at the supermarket. These devices are especially meant to be useful to the physically disabled and elderly. “Any object can be smart and robotic,” Libman said, “We want to bring robots into everyday life.”

The Israeli tech company made it clear that the finished product will look just like a regular suitcase. They’re planning to partner with a carry-on luggage maker, since the device that makes it “smart” weighs just 2.5 pounds and can be fitted on old-fashion luggage.

With NUA’s smart suitcase, carrying round heavy luggage isn’t a burden. But how their invention will handle tough obstacles like stairs? It will be interesting to wait.

8. Why can this carry-on suitcase follow you?
A.Because there is a camera sensor inside.
B.Because there exists an anti-theft alarm.
C.Because it can recognize your smell.
D.Because a battery plays a key part.
9. According to the passage, the “smart” suitcase _______.
A.can go everywhere
B.is on sale now
C.can make our hands free during traveling
D.was designed by Alex Libman
10. What can we learn about NUA?
A.It is an Israeli tech company producing mobile phones.
B.It has improved the features of the device.
C.It will make the suitcase available to customers in a month.
D.It wants to bring more smart and robotic devices into everyday life.
11. Where does the article probably come from?
A.A text-book.B.A website.
C.A biography.D.A poster.

It is reported that half the world’s forests have already been destroyed. This widespread destruction is due to deforestation (采伐森林). Deforestation is the removal of a forest or group of trees where the land is later transformed to a non-forest use. Cutting down trees is necessary for man’s survival. However, deforestation has a number of negative effects on the environment and needs to be controlled.

There are two main purposes for cutting down trees and one of them is to use the trees as resources. Essential items like paper, furniture and charcoal are all made from trees. Deforestation is also carried out to clear land for farming and to make room for roads and houses. As the population grows, more of the forest has to be cleared.

Although deforestation is necessary up to a point, it has some negative effects on the environment. Firstly, cutting down forests destroys animal habitats, leaving them with no place to live in. Deforestation also allows erosion to occur, which leaves the land easy to landslides and makes it difficult for plants to grow there. Finally, the removal of trees also worsens air pollution. Trees act as natural air filters that change carbon dioxide into oxygen. When they are removed, carbon dioxide can build up and pollute the atmosphere. Hence, it is obvious that deforestation harms the environment.

Due to the harm deforestation causes, it is necessary to control it. There are a number of ways to do this. One of them is to make better use of farming land. That means we do not need as much land for farming, and hence do not need to cut down so many trees. There must also be laws to limit deforestation and these laws must be enforced strictly. On top of that, reforestation must be carried out systematically. This method involves planting new trees and plants in areas where deforestation has occurred to replace what was destroyed.

To sum up, although deforestation must be carried out, it can harm the environment and must be controlled. Beyond a certain point, this damage to the environment cannot be fixed. Hence, we should do our best to make sure that the damage is never too great to fix.

12. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.How people get farmland.
B.What trees mean to human beings.
C.Why people carry out deforestation.
D.What effect deforestation has on environment.
13. What consequence may deforestation bring to animals according to the text?
A.Homelessness.B.Extinction.C.Disease.D.Wars.
14. According to the text, how can we control the harm of deforestation?
A.By replacing new trees.B.By banning deforestation.
C.By passing laws to limit farmland.D.By making the best of farmland.
15. What may be the worst result if deforestation is beyond control?
A.Carbon dioxide will pollute the atmosphere.
B.There will not be any forest left in the world.
C.The damage to the environment will be beyond repair.
D.People will have no trees as resources for essential items.
