When my son was eleven years old, he came home from school in tears one day. A couple of the older kids bullied (欺负) him at the bus stop. Rob wanted to stay home from school, so he wouldn’t have to meet the boys.

We called the school. “We’ll be happy to call the boys’ parents,” We were told, “And you should call the police.” “We don’t know what we will do yet.” I said. I felt that calling the police was a choice to be used when everything else failed, and I wanted first to consider other ways of dealing with the situation, I asked him to hold off calling the boys’ parents.

The next day was Saturday. Rob happened to look our of the window and said in fer, “There are the boys who beat me up!” Two older boys were standing in front of our house, as if they were waiting for Rob to step outside.

My wife Bev opened the door and said with a smile, “Hi guys. Would you like some ice cream?” They looked at each other in puzzlement. But they were teenagers, after all, so one of them said, “Sure. Why not?”

Bev quickly introduced herself, Rob’s younger brothers and me. She even introduced Rusty, the dog. “And I think you already know Rob,” She said. Her idea was to help them to see that Rob was a person, not a target. He had a family and even owned a family pet.

Bev drew the boys into chat while we ate ice cream. After a few minutes, she said, “I know there’s been some trouble at the bus stop. I think there may be a misunderstanding.” They nodded that there had indeed been trouble at the bus stop. She continued, “Maybe we can talk about the misunderstanding, so you can be friends.” We talked until the ice cream was finished. Finally the boys apologized.

Understanding is a difficult task. It may be easier to control conflict by force than to find a way to cooperate. Force can calm a situation. But understanding leads to peace.

B.He meant to try some other ways to solve it first.
C.The police wouldn’t take the bullying seriously.

5. What does “But they were teenagers, after all” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.They couldn’t refuse the attraction of ice cream.
B.They could be cheated into telling the truth.
C.They dared to face any challenges bravely.
D.They were too young to understand the invitation.
6. Why did Bev introduce her family and their dog?
A.To give the dog to the boys as a gift.
B.To advise the boys to have a family pet.
C.To expect the boys to treat Rob kindly.
D.To show off the wealth of the family.
7. From the text we can infer Bev was ________.
A.fond of children

When we think of a generation gap we usually think of conflicting tastes in music, or pastimes. But now the generation gap is handwriting. After one teacher in Tennessee discovered that she had students who couldn’t read the assignments she was writing on the board, she posted it on the Internet saying handwriting should be taught in schools.

Opponents claim that handwriting has become out of time in our modern world. Typed words have become a primary form of communication. Once a practical skill, handwriting is no longer used by the vast majority of Americans. It is no longer taught in schools, and some claim that the time that it would take to teach it could be put to better use, for instance, by teaching the technical skills.

But even in today’s world there are still plenty of reasons to pick up a pen and apply it to paper. Many American institutions still require original signatures, for instance, signing for a registered letter and buying a house. And original signatures are much more difficult to forge(伪造)than their digital counterparts. There is also strong evidence that writing by hand is good for the mind. It activates a different part of the brain, and improves fine moving skills in young children. People also tend to remember what they write by hand more than what they type, and the process of writing by hand has been shown to stimulate ideas. Not only that, studies have shown that kids who write by hand learn to read and spell earlier than those who don’t. Not to mention, handwriting is pleasing, as is evidenced by the fact that no one has ever typed a love letter. And handwriting remains popular as an art form.

Yes we live in a modern world, but we live in a modern world that is based on fundamental values.

8. What did the teacher find in her class?
A.Her students had a big generation gap with her.
B.Her handwriting was too terrible to understand.
C.Some students could not recognize her handwriting on the blackboard.
D.Some students’ handwriting on the blackboard was too difficult to tell.
9. Why do some people agree to teach handwriting in school?
A.Handwriting is very easy to remember.
B.Handwriting is beneficial to the brain.
C.Handwriting can help one buy a house.
D.Handwriting is an art form out of time.
10. What can we infer from the passage?
A.What people write by hand is not easy to fake.
B.Lovers often write love letters to each other.
C.Handwriting is unnecessary in our modern society.
D.Technical skills are more important than handwriting.
11. What is the authors attitude towards teaching handwriting in school?
A.Opposed.B.Objective.
C.Unconcerned.D.Supportive.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了鸟通过不同的肢体语言来表明情绪。

Birds are becoming popular as pets, but unlike owners with more common pets, owners of birds are often not familiar with the behavioural patterns (行为模式) of the animal which allow them to recognise what the pet needs and wants. For example, most of us can recognise the behaviour a dog exhibits when he is hungry or wants attention, but how many of us know how birds go about showing the same feelings?

By learning about the behavioural patterns of the bird, his owner can forge a stronger relationship with the pet. Owners can learn how to read birds’ body language, including movements of the eyes, wings, tail and beak (喙). In addition, the sounds the bird makes can also show the mood, desires, and requirements of the pet.

A bird’s eyes are different from a human’s. While both birds and humans have pupils (瞳孔) and irises (虹膜), birds have the ability to control the size of their pupils by enlarging and reducing their irises quickly. This behaviour, flashing, is something birds may do when they are angry, interested, or frightened.

A bird also communicates through the use of his wings. A bird may lift or open his wings as a sign of happiness. But if the bird starts opening and closing his wings, it may signal anger or pain. If a bird fails to fold his wings against his body, and instead lets them hang by his sides, the bird may be ill. Healthy adult birds will typically tuck (折起) their wings against their bodies when they are at rest.

Birds often use their tail feathers to communicate, so an understanding of this behaviour will help the pet’s owner. A bird may move his tail from side to side, called wagging, to express happiness (similar to dogs in behaviour and meaning). Happiness is also the emotion expressed by other kinds of tail movements, such as moving up and down. However, if a bird fans his tail feathers out, it is usually a way to show anger or aggression.

12. What can we know about birds according to Paragraph 1 ?
A.They have little body language.
B.They are easy to escape from owners.
C.They aren’t familiar to their owners.
D.Their behaviour is hard to understand.
13. What does the underlined word “forge” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Develop.B.Miss.C.Pretend.D.Copy.
14. What is the author likely to write about after the last paragraph?
A.The sounds of birds.
