My writing career began ten years ago with my articles published locally and nationally. As a beginner, I was happy to be on my way, writing and learning as much as I could. With two little kids underfoot, as well as working full-time, it was really difficult to make time for writing, but I managed.

Readers told me they laughed, cried or were inspired by my articles. But they didn’t know what was really going on behind the typewriter. I was not a happy mommy, and found it difficult to enjoy the little things in everyday life. In short, I was not a happy person.

I realized I had to make some changes. I started walking every morning. It cleared my head, allowed me time to think, gave me fresh air, and made me feel invigorated(精神焕发)and healthy. I was eating wisely, and the weight started to go. I started a new job, joined a monthly writing chapter, and was determined to keep up my walking. Finding the balance was something difficult. But I was determined to fit in writing because it made me happy. Surely I loved to watch the news and have my tea, but that wasn’t what made me truly happy.

My own happiness has shown through my family, my job performance and my attitude towards challenging situations. I again have readers telling me the effect my writing has had on them, with some able to get on with their own writing because of my articles.

It was up to me to make it happen —my own happiness. One step at a time and one word at a time. And I did it.

It is probably the strangest sport anyone has ever invented. And at first sight, it looks like the easiest. Competitors have to do two things. The first is to stand still. The second is to place their hands anywhere on the body of a car, and keep it there.

This is where things start getting difficult. Lots of people are doing the same thing. And the winner of the “handstand” contest is the person who can carry on doing it for the longest time. That person gets to own the car.

It still seems to be an easy thing to do. At the beginning it is. Anyone can stand still. But when the contest has been going for four or five days, standing still seems like the most difficult job in the world . And keeping the hand in place over this time becomes an act of serious attention. After a few days, the hand seems to belong to someone else----someone who wants to go home and get some sleep.

Competitors are allowed to take a five-minute break every hour to eat, drink or do whatever else is necessary. No one is allowed to lean on the car for support. Winners need to be able to show great powers of attention. They also need to be able to develop special skills.

Maybe the popularity of the “handathon” is due to the fact that it is not necessary to be a trained athlete to enter. Competitors in the Longview handathon certainly don’t seem to do much preparation. Most say they will prepare by “getting lots of sleep”. Others say they will “eat healthy food” or “pray for success”.   The whole event gives ordinary people the chance to do something interesting and win something in the end.

Handathons are competitions, but there is little rivalry (竞争) between competitors. They help each other out and keep each other’s spitits up. People who drop out early return with food, drink and encouragement.

9. What ability is most important in a handathon?
A.Not leaning on the carB.Standing without any support
C.Having strong powers of attentionD.Eating and drinking in five minutes
10. Why is handathon popular?
A.Anyone who is interested can join in it.
B.Someone can win with special training
C.It doesn’t need to make any preparation
D.People get along well with each other in it.
11. Which of the following statements about the “handathon” is right?
A.Competitors are not allowed to drop out
B.Competitors don’t encourage each other
C.Competitors can sit down and take a 10-minute break every hour
D.A competitor has to place his or her hand anywhere on the body of a car.
12. Which is the writer’s opinion about the “handathon”?
A.It is the easiest of all sports.
B.It can last a whole day.
C.It is not as easy as it looks at first.
D.It is no good competing in a “handathon”

As the population of the planet increases, so does the number of homes, business, parking lots, schools, airports and roadways. All these structures use electricity and need to be lighted. Humans demand light. They want their homes more comfortable and they want their streets safe. The problem is that researchers are finding that all the light is having a negative effect on humans and wildlife as well.

Less than 10 years ago I drove to a thinly populated section of my own, lay down in the middle of the road and watched an attractive meteor shower(流星雨). If I did that today, I wouldn’t be able to see the meteor shower.

Nowadays scientists are finding light pollution can be almost as bad as carbon dioxide (二氧化碳)pollution. One of the saddest parts of light pollution is that most of it is unnecessary and most of the outdoor light that we use is wasted. One only needs to look at a row of street lights to see how much of the lights shines upwards and lights the sky: a total waste of electricity.

Additionally, the production of electricity creates pollution by releasing greenhouse gases. This affects the air we breathe and our quality of life.

Scientists are also studying the effects of light pollution on wildlife. Thousands of birds die each year when they crash into highly lighted buildings, as they become puzzled by the light. It has been long known that tiny baby sea turtles become lost and follow the light on the shore instead of heading towards the sea.

Fortunately, light pollution is one of the easiest sources of pollution that can be corrected without a negative effect. Following some guidelines and a little searching on Google can give you many ideas on how to reduce your contribution to light pollution.

13. According to the passage, the best way to deal with light pollution is to ______.
A.Reducing the output of lights
B.Educating people about light pollution
C.Avoiding the use of unnecessary lighting
D.Inventing environmentally-friendly lights
14. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Astronauts can’t see clearly in space nowadays
B.Global warming results in light pollution in some way
C.We are almost at a loss how to deal with light pollution
D.Some animals use natural light to direct their movements.
15. What will probably be provided following the last paragraph?
A.Benefits of searching on Google
B.More bad effects of light pollution
C.Helpful tips for suffering the Internet
D.Ways to decrease light pollution

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了NBA球员的日常生活以及他们的训练安排。
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余项。(共5题)

NBA basketball players devote much of their lives to preparing for games. This preparation, which includes studying game films, practicing skills and treating injuries, is essential because of the pressure-packed nature of their profession.

16     Generally, on the day of a game, players get together in the morning for an-hour shooting and also to review films of the opponent of that night.     17     Players receive treatments for injuries, put on their uniforms, discuss strategies with coaches and warm up during the remaining time before the game gets underway. As thousands of people cheer them on, a team’s best players will play 40 or more minutes during the game. After the game, some players stick around to lift weights before showering and heading home.

18     They must leave their families at home, spend hours on planes traveling around the country and try to stay rested while sleeping at a different hotel every night.

The NBA’s 82-game regular season is tiring.     19     So many players focus on recuperating (恢复健康) for at least part of the off-season. Other players may work on recovering from surgery to correct injuries.

Weeks before the training camp, NBA basketball players start getting back in shape for the upcoming season.     20     Younger players often take part in developmental leagues during the summer months to increase their chances of getting onto an NBA team.

A.Trips can be difficult for NBA basketball players.
B.The league was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946.
C.It can wear down even the best-conditioned athletes.
D.It consists of 30 teams, 29 in the US and 1 in Canada.
E.The preparation may involve practicing basketball skills and lifting weights.
F.Following lunch, many players take a nap and eat a pre-game meal before arriving at the field.
G.An NBA basketball player’s typical workday routine varies based on his team’s schedule of games.
