Recently I and other Red Cross volunteers met a group of victims from Hurricane Katrina. We were there, as mental health professionals, to offer “psychological first aid” and I was struck by the simple healing power of presence. As we walked in the gate to the shelter, we were greeted with a burst of gratitude from the first person we met. I felt appreciated, but also guilty, because I hadn’t really done anything yet.
I first realized the power of presence many years ago when a friend’s mother passed away unexpectedly. I received a call saying she had just passed away. I wanted to rush down there immediately, but didn’t want to intrude(打扰) on this very personal period of sadness. I was torn about what to do. Another friend with me then said, “Just go. Just be there.” I did, and I will never regret it.
Since then, I have not hesitated to be in the presence of others. Once I sat at the bedside of a young man suffering from the pain of his AIDS-ralated dying. He was not awake, and obviously unaware of others’ presence. However, the atmosphere was by no means solemn. His family, playing guitars and singing, allowed him to be present with them as though he were still fully alive.
In my life, I am repeatedly struck by the healing power of presence. In it, none of us are truly alone. It not only is something we give to others but also changes me for the better.

The effects of coffee consumption on health have long been a subject of conflict and uncertainty. Since the 1980s, some have spoken out against coffee as harmful to health, while others have welcomed coffee for its supposed benefits to health.
According to a scientific report, mild coffee consumption, three to five cups per day, can be taken as a healthy dietary pattern, along with other healthful behaviors. The report also says that coffee consumption helps reduce the risk of heart disease and it protects against Parkinson’s disease.
According to Dr. Donald Hensrud of Mayo Clinic, high consumption of coffee has health risks. Dr. Hensrud mentions the dangers of high coffee consumption for people with a certain illness that slows the breakdown of caffeine in the body. Some studies said that drinking two or more cups of coffee daily can actually increase the risk of heart disease in these people.
According to conclusions from a recent study led by Dr. Gregory Marcus, a doctor from the University of California San Francisco, daily moderate consumption of caffeine, less than 4 cups, is not associated with these issues.
Until the scientific community reaches a general agreement on the effects of coffee consumption on human health, it will be up to the individual to decide whether the benefits of drinking coffee are greater than the risks.
When informed of these possible health benefits and harms of drinking coffee, Harwood, a high school student stated, “Even though there might be some negative effects of drinking coffee, for the most part, coffee drinking sounds good for health. Not to mention I need coffee to stay awake. ”

Last weekend I was lucky enough to attend one of Spain’s most famous carnivals in the city of Cadiz. You can only understand why it is one of the most important carnivals in the world after seeing it for yourself. Everybody I saw, of all ages, was fancily-dressed from top to toe, making me feel like I was in a fairy-tale world with singing and dancing all around the city centre.
Almost instantly after stepping off the train in Cadiz, we were filled with joy, as everyone was in high spirits. A number of people parading through the streets playing traditional music filled people with happiness and craziness like I have never seen before. As we wandered around, we saw that the creativity of some costumes was incredible! From Shrek to Japanese wrestlers, the imagination and effort put into the fancy dresses was remarkable. You could really tell that people put a lot of time and energy into making some amazing costumes.
Then there were the groups of mostly old men who would be passionately singing some traditional songs. I could tell they were singing from their heart with such excitement. Furthermore, the fact that I was not able to understand the inside jokes did not matter, as I was attracted by the actions and expressions they provided. These mini street shows were a true taste of Spanish culture and set me up for a fun night.
As the night progressed, the streets got more packed with people. A moment that felt quite dreamlike was when we were dancing outside a convenience store with music provided by the owners booming through their speakers! Everyone who passed would be jamming along to the music. Afterwards, we went to the main party at E1 Puerto, which was like a mini festival.
After this special weekend of festival, it is true to say that the Spanish know how to party!

We all know the importance of curiosity, and here are some tips on how to develop it.
Keep an open mind. This is essential if you are to have a curious mind. Be open to learning, unlearning, and relearning things.

He shouted, but the man drive off. As a devoted Christian, he told his dad he real forgave the thief. What’s more, he wanted the thief know he was forgiven. So the next day, he posted the message on a poster-board and put it in the front yard. “To the person who stole my bike: You hurt my feeling.
