名校
文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。这篇文章主要讲了印第安纳州的一个九岁男孩阻止劫车贼的故事。

A 9-year-old boy in Indiana stopped a would-be carjacker on Christmas Day from running away with his father’s truck.

Kevin Cooksey was inside the One Stop Express gas station in Kokomo buying medicine for his wife when a man jumped into the driver’s seat of his truck. Cooksey had left the engine running and the door unlocked.

“When I saw my truck door open, I was like, ‘Oh my God, what am I going to tell my wife?’” Cooksey said.

His son, Larry, was sitting in the back seat. “As soon as he opened the door, I got frightened,” said Larry. “So I pulled out the gun and pointed it to his head.”

This was enough to make the carjacker think twice and he jumped out of the truck to try another car. Parked beside Cooksey’s truck was Kyle Sparling’s black Trailblazer. He too had left the engine running as he went into the store. The man got in Sparling’s SUV and took off.

“I didn’t know what to think, I just kind of ran outside and watched him,” said Sparling.

As the man sped off, Cooksey told Sparling to get into his truck and the two men began to run after him. The icy winter conditions made the driving difficult, but the pair followed at a safe distance as the carjacker drove in a “Z” way. After a few miles, the carjacker knocked into the sign of a local business, American Tool and Party Rental. Cooksey and Sparling called police to the place.

The police put 32-year-old Ollie Dunn into prison. Sparling’s car was damaged in the wheel, and the windscreen got cracked after the sign fell on it. “I was just glad he didn’t knock into anybody,” Sparling said. “That was my biggest fear, I think.”

Cars are “boxes collecting toxic(有毒的)gases” that stunt the growth of children, a leading expert has warned. Professor Sir David King said that parents should avoid driving their little ones to school and encourage them to walk instead. Vehicles(车辆)provide hardly any protection from the deadly gases, while walking is already known to be good for health.

Sir David told The Guardian: “Children sitting in the backseat of vehicles are probably breathing in polluted air. You may be driving a cleaner vehicle but your children are sitting in a box collecting toxic gases from all the vehicles around you. The best thing for all our health is to leave our cars behind. It’s been shown that the advantages of walking and cycling far outweigh the costs of breathing in pollution.” Sir David added: “If more drivers knew the damage they could be doing to their children, I think they’d think twice about getting in the car.”

His warming comes after recent research found that children’s brains slow down when they are put in high levels of air pollution. The study found pupils who breathed in toxic gases on the way to school had difficulty in performing as well as their classmates Spanish researchers said their findings appeared to show that polluted air is harming children’s brains as well as their lungs.

Toxic air is responsible for 40,000 deaths a year in the UK---and Brussels has warned Britain it could face if it continued to break EU safety rules. Former research has shown that too much polluted air will shorten people’s life length. Air pollution falls only behind cancer, obesity and heart disease in the biggest health risks to the nation, Prime Minister Theresa May recently said.

B.Driving costs more than walking and cycling
C.A cleaner vehicle will not collect toxic gases
D.Most people have a good knowledge of toxic gases

A.Air pollution only affects kids’ lungs
B.Air pollution levels have risen in Spain
C.Air pollution has greatly changed kids’ character
D.Air pollution may worsen kids’ school performance
11. What will the UK most probably do next?
A.Ignore EU safety rules

There is an English saying that says, “Let Sleeping Dogs Lie.” It means not bringing up an old problem. Researchers in Hungary have found another reason to let dogs keep on sleeping. It seems the animals are learning while they sleep.

The Hungarian researchers placed tools on the dogs’ heads to know about electrical activity in the brain. The brain activity, called sleep spindles(梭状波), takes place in human beings, and has been connected with learning. The researchers hope to understand how the dogs’ ability to learn and remember changes as they get older. The study may help them understand how human brains change as we age.

The researchers found differences between male and female dogs. Iotchey, a researcher, says the females appeared much better at learning new things. Female dogs have about twice as many spindles per minute as male dogs, they also happen to be the better learners, and they memorize the task much better. But it was harder for all the older dogs to remember things, especially when several things were happening at the same time.

DoraSzabo also studies sleep spindles. Szabo is a neuroscientist in a university in Budapest. She says the older dogs have fewer spindles and are easily cheated. “If you first hide the reward into one bowl, then in another and in another, they get lost after a while. So their performance is going down, and they are getting poor in solving new problems.”

Researchers hope the study will not only help understanding of learning ability and memory changes in dogs, but also the aging of humans. Senior Researcher EnikoKubinyi adds that the aging dogs suffer from the same problems as humans who are aging. “Among very old dogs, up to two thirds of them show signs of dementia(痴呆), and this dementia is really very similar to that of humans, so we could use dog as a natural model of human aging.”

12. Why do researchers study dogs’ sleep?
A.To help the dogs sleep well
B.To study dogs’ sleeping activity
C.To control dogs’ learning ability
D.To know more about human brains
13. What is the relationship between the number of sleep spindles and dogs’ learning ability?
A.They have nothing to do with each other
B.Dogs with less spindles have better learning ability
C.Dogs with more spindles have better learning ability
D.Dogs’ learning ability is totally decided by spindle number
14. What can we know about old dogs in Paragraph 4?
A.They are easy to play jokes on
B.They can finish tasks one after another
C.They are good at solving new problems
D.Their memories are not so good as before
15. Which is the best title for the text?
A.What we can do to let dogs sleep
B.What we can learn by watching sleeping dogs
C.What the saying “Let Sleeping Dogs Lie” means
D.What is the difference between humans and dogs
