We know that many animals do not stay in one place. Birds, fish and other animals move from one place to another at a certain time. They move for different reasons: most of them move to find food more easily, but others move to get away from places that are too crowded.

When cold weather comes, many birds move to warmer places to find food. Some fishes give birth in warm water and move to cold water to feed. The most famous migration(迁移) is probably the migration of the fish, which is called “salmon”. This fish is born in fresh water but it travels many miles to salt water. There it spends its life. When it is old, it returns to its birthplace in fresh water. Then it gives birth and dies there. In northern Europe, there is a kind of mouse. They leave their mountain homes when they become too crowded. They move down to the low land. Sometimes they move all the way to the seaside, and many of them are killed when they fall into the sea.

Recently, scientists have studied the migration of a kind of lobster(龙虾). Every year, when the season of bad weather arrives, the lobster get into a long line and start to walk across the floor of the ocean. Nobody knows why they do this, and nobody knows where they go.

So, sometimes we know why humans and animals move from one place to another, but at other times we don’t. Maybe living things just like travel.

It was a warm April day when a big fat envelope came in the mail from the only college I had ever imagined attending. I tore open the packet. My eyes were fixed on the word “congratulations”. I don’t remember ever smiling so wide.
Then I looked at my financial(财政的)package.
The cost of Dream School’s tuition(学费), room and board was around $ 40,000--- an impossible sum! How could I afford to attend? What good reasons did I have to go there when three other fine colleges were offering me free tuition? My other choices were good, solid schools even if they weren’t as famous as my first choice.
In my mind, attending my dream university would be the only way to realize my dream of becoming a world-class writer. My parents understood how I felt. They told me that even though it would be a financial problem, I could go wherever I would be happiest. But as I was always careful with money, I wasn’t sure what to do.
One of the schools that offered me a full ride had an informational dinner one night in the spring. Considering my parents’ financial difficulties, I decided to drive the 45 minutes and attend. At first, all I had planned to do was smile politely, eat free food, listen quietly. But I surprised myself.
At dinner the president of the university talked about the wonderful activities on campus (校园)including guest lectures and social gatherings. He also made it perfectly clear that free food would be offered at all future events. He continued with explanations of professors, class sizes, activities, and sporting events on campus. As he spoke, I began to realize that this school, though not as good as my first choice, might be the best one for me. It seemed small yet with many great programs. It seemed challenging yet caring.
As the president ended his speech, we clapped politely and pushed back our chairs. As I walked out that door, a feeling of comfort washed over me. Looking at the campus that night, I realized that I would be spending the next four years right there.
In all honesty, my university is not as well-known as my “dream”university. However, it turned out to be the right choice of schools for me.
8. How did the author feel when he started to read the letter?
A.He was uncertain which school to go to.B.He was lost in his dream.
C.He was worried about the money.D.He was full of joy.
9. We can learn from the passage that the parents were _________.
A.honestB.supportiveC.strictD.decisive
10. In Paragraph 5, “offered me a full ride”can be replaced by “_______”.
A.would pay for transport to the school
B.would show me around the campus
C.would offer free meals at all events
D.would charge me nothing for tuition
11. What does the author mainly want to say?
A.You should consider comfort in your choice of schools.
B.Your second-choice college may actually by your best fit.
C.You should try your best to attend your dream school.
D.Your choice of schools should be based on their fame.

In general, people talk about two groups of colors: warm colors and cool colors. Researchers in psychology think that there are also two groups of people: people who prefer warm colors and people who prefer cool colors.

The warm colors are red, orange and yellow. Where there are warm colors and a lot of light, people usually want to be active. People think that red, for example, is exciting. Sociable people, those who like to be with others, like red. The cool colors are green, blue and violet. These colors, unlike warm colors, are relaxing. Where there are cool colors, people are usually quiet. People who like to spend time alone often prefer blue.

Red may be exciting, but one researcher says that time seems to pass more slowly in a room with warm colors than in a room with cool colors. He suggests that a warm color, such as red or orange is a good color for a living room or restaurant. People who are talking or eating do not want time to pass quickly. Cool colors are better for offices or factories if the people who are working there want time to pass quickly.

Researchers do not know why people think some colors are warm and other colors are cool. However, almost everyone agrees that red, orange, and yellow are warm and that green, blue, and violet are cool. Perhaps warm colors remind people of warm days and the cool colors remind them of cool days. Because in the north the sun is higher during summer, the hot summer sunlight appears yellow.

12. Which of the following colors belong to cool colors?
A.Yellow, green.B.Blue, violet.
C.Black, blue.D.Brown, white.
13. Which of the following statements is not true?
A.Sociable people like warm colors.
B.Warm colors can make people excited.
C.People who like to be with others don’t like red.
D.Where there are warm colors, people want to be active.
14. Which is the right color for different rooms?
A.Red or orange for offices.B.Orange for dining-rooms.
C.Blue for bedrooms.D.Red for studies.
15. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.It shows the reason why people think some colors are warm and others are cool.
B.Warm colors remind people of warm days.
C.Cool colors remind people of cool days.
D.People have an agreeable opinion of warm colors and cool colors.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章用多个事例告诉我们“未来的生活是不是比现在更清闲?”是一个伪命题。

Long ago, people believed that in the future we would work less, have more free time and get more relaxed.     16

Today we work harder, work longer hours and have more stresses than ten years ago. We walk faster, talk faster and sleep less than previous generations. And although we use machines that save us time, we have less free time than our parents and grandparents.     17     An American journalist James Gleick in a new book, says that people are suffering from “hurry sickness” — we’re trying to do more things in less time. As a result, our lives are stressful. He says that if we don’t slow down, we won’t live as long as our parents.     18

Newspaper articles today are shorter and the headlines are bigger. Most people don’t have enough time to read the articles, so they only read the headlines. On TV and the radio, newspapers speak more quickly than ten years ago. In the USA, there is a book called One-Minute Bedtime Stories for children. These are shorter versions of traditional stories, specially written for “busy parents” who want to save time! Some answer phones now have “quick playback” buttons so that we can replay people’s messages faster — we can’t waste time listening to people speaking at the normal speed!     19     Ten years ago when people went to art galleries they spent seconds looking at each picture. Today they spend just three three seconds! Nowadays, many people prefer faster and dynamic sports like basketball.

20     Our cars are faster but the traffic is worse, so we drive more slowly. We spend more time sitting in our cars, feeling stressed. Experts predict that in ten years the average speed on the road in cities will be only 17 km/h.

A.People didn’t feel stressed ten years ago.
B.But unluckily, this has not happened yet.
C.Even when we relax we do everything more quickly.
D.But what is this doing to our health?
E.For most people, being faster doesn’t mean being better.
F.The only thing that is slower than before is the way we drive.
G.Now everything is faster than before, which bring us more convenience.
